For a simple reason: the point of pixel art is individual pixel control, and the more there are, the harder it becomes. A 100x100 piece is already 10,000 px and that's a lot; this one is above 200,000: no-one can control that unless in a tiled mockup! Consequently the line work is rough and jaggy, and generally pixel-level detail is far from optimal.
In a related way, pixel limitations are also pixel art's material and strength, and the more you see the pixels, the more interesting it gets. Almost no piece this large can do justice to the pixel medium, apart from the occasional Fool/Elk masterpiece.
Could you briefly explain why you think the piece would improve at half its current size? :) I was having some concerns about the size of the image when I started, but in the end I just started the lineart and well, I basically adjusted the size of the whole image according to the size of the "blobmaster" creature, which is what I first drew.
For example, in the second scene that I did, I tried to keep it smaller, and well...to be honest, I'm not entirely satisfied with the result and I'm even thinking I should've done that one a little bit bigger.
Thank you! Creepiness is definitely the feeling I was aiming for. He's a good guy in the end, believe me :)
I see...I will try to redo a version of it with a lower size (at least for testing/comparison purposes). Thanks for the feedback!
