I like the subtly different shade on the right side of him. Took me a while to notice it, helps make the whole thing look a bit more three-dimensional. Nice.
You might try something like this. Use the PJ search engine (the old one at the bottom of any page, much better than the new one at the top!) for different examples.
The grass in this piece should clarify what I meant by 'hint in the color transitions': a few silhouettes of grass blades where the transition makes them easy to pixel are visual clues enough for the viewer's brain to fill the whole lawn with grass. That's basically what you did anyway with dithering ;)
Thank you everyone, I really appreciate it! :'D
Manupix - Oops, I'm so bad at counting! Thanks for pointing that out!
I agree, I think it does look pretty harsh. I would love to try some feather textures, but I'm not quite sure how to go about doing that. Do you have any tips?
That's 5+1 colors ;)
Dithering doesn't work here, especially the harsh isolated pixels. You should try some feather texturing instead; you don't have to show every feather but just to hint at them in the color transition zones.
Nice dithering and colours.
