When I see mockups like these, I wonder how much time would it take to make a game in this level. It's very-very good - and I try to avoid the word 'perfect' - but is there the money and time for this? Just a rhetorical question, I don't want argue.
Not sure it would be a nightmare to light this by pixel. Actually I can think of very stylish lightings, such as a blinking street lamp and stuff. That transparent glow just doesn't work for me, but it's just me.
Congrats btw, well deserved, by far.
Let this be a lesson to all.
Gradients and CGd FX = Sent back/flamed/ignored.
Pure pixels with links = 1st Place for the month and over 100 faves.
Thanks for the link, I'm interested in exactly these kinds of things. I played around with such lighting a few years ago and I hope to soon start working on a project that will expand on that.
I admit I was not aware of games from the 90s that would use such visual styles. If you have concrete examples, I would love to check them out. I'll send you a private message, so we don't get off-topic here.
Metaru, we can have different views on whether this is or isn't expanding the artform for us (and that's perfectly OK). The enhancement of the ambient to me subtly changes the feeling of the image — in a way that was not possible (and then for some time not thought of) in pixel art. Cyangmou's works such as this or his Super Londo Bros personally strike me as something new (or rarely seen), making steps on the edges (and beyond) of what I've seen so far, so to me that expands what results (feelings, styles) I imagine when I think of pixel art. My excitement for this in no way tries to intrude on however you feel about it.
except there is no "expanding the artform" going on that version, merely a fancier, cost effective way to enhace the ambient by means of using a CG gradient.
dont overpraise it for what it isnt.
I approve of the pure and the modern light effects version. I'm glad there are people who try to expand the artform towards less explored territories. Keep them coming!
I'm digging everything about this, and yes the NPA looks better IMO.
Been folowing this piece for some time, and I can't wait to play this!
You have a very good sense of contrast in your works. Loving the colors too.
yeah, that looks good.
I will work on implementing that once I am able to get back to it =)
I think some subtle sub-pixelling will work. Just enough to let the viewer know that the jaw is in on the action.

But it's no big. Looks good regardless.
Again, great work with this. Glad you posted it here.
Not to open a can of worms / add fuel to the fire, but I actually prefer this "2005" version they made you submit. Not because I'm an anti-NPA crusader, but in this particular case, I think the version without NPA works better with the style.
Regardless, I hope you post more stuff from this game in the future.
Absolutely amazing! The pink works really well with the muted green background.
@ErekT: I tried it, but it looked shitty, I can't say if it's just the angle of her face why it dont works or if a jaw movement for anime characters looks bad. Maybe it was not the best designchoice to draw her lips quite realistical and animate it that way, but not to sure. SInce it's a concept stuff might change once I have better ideas.
@Harrison K: yeah reddit has a more modern approach to pixelart, so I don't had any problems uploading it there =)
It is really, really well done and tells an interesting story. I like how you di the gorund tiles and details, they blend in very nicely.
The only thing that bothers me a bit is the anatomy of Creya's torso. The collar bone and shoulders just don't look right. Everything else is top notch!

I haven't seen the NPA version of this, but guess it was glow&shades and stuff.
This version doesn't take away from the beauty. This is an excellent piece, so much talent in many things at once.
Oh, i forget my comment for the Pixel Art...
This work is awesome, i like the car ;)
NPA is a silly term and should be discontinued.
Cyangmou: Nice work on the car and cobblestone.
Fantastic stuff!
I'd animate the chin and maybe cheeks a bit along with the mouth for speech. Looks a bit freaky with just the mouth moving.
Weekly spotlight incoming.
It looks superb Cyangmou, really.
holy ! this is too fabulous.
consistent and neat style.
The .gif is amazing, but the typewriter is a bit too slow, thought i can't think of a reasonable fix for that besides only animating the typewriter once for each word, which would probably suck.
@Jalonso Thank you for the information and the light really does not seem PA... :s
@Mutley, NPA means Not Pixel Art.
Note that this piece is pixelart but the glow on the lights and possibly the text too makes this a hybrid (NPA) which is the only reason it does not suit a pixelart gallery.
We have no problem and even encourage placing hybrid versions of pixels in the description as we like to see and admire them too and sometimes it gives you the art in context.
@Cyangmou, in policing and managing all the reports I have totally failed to mention that this project is awesome, the art, the GUI, the text and especially that car.
@Hiuru, This was added by accident before reviewing. I have PMd Cyangmu to update with the pixel version in the description and place this piece in the description. Because he has been a long standing PJer and respected and admired by most and becuase no malice was intended we are giving him like 24 hours (he's in the western side of Europe) or so to update so that we don't have to send it back.
I'd hate to be that guy but this is so unfair. Other people that submit pixel art with NPA are automatically denied and told to change and fix their piece but this was added with no issue. What should be posted is the original without NPA...not trying to bash but....
I do like the piece but again, what should have been submitted was the original pixel without NPA - like others have said.
Wow... just wow.
If I had to say something, it might be the speaking anim is too fast and looks like she says many more than the written words; both in the preview here and the main anim on DA.
Are you the one who posted this on reddit.com/r/pixelart? Nice work btw :)
Lovin' the characters - sprites and portraits both. I agree the pure pixel versions should be here though.
I think you're meant to post the 'pure pixel art' versions here and link to the version with the non-pixel art elements. I like the tilework and the fact the character sprites aren't the usual freaky 'chibi' like things. They actually have proper faces which is nice.
The links in the description are all broken D: I know this is an oldie, but any chance of a reupload?
The first link (animated version on deviantArt) is available via the Internet Archive, for the curious: https://web.archive.org/web/20200524192527/https://www.deviantart.com/cyangmou/art/Gothic-Dieselpunk-Concept-Mockup-429180270
