Since some people here are apparently still living in 2005 I uploaded a version without gradients - hoppe you whiny cats are now happy.

Basic palette has 56 colors

Overall artwork with different palettes for the tileset (to not fuck up the complete composition) has now 122 colors

it's so important for pixelart right? Yeah because it leads to better results.

Gothic Dieselpunk – Concept Mockup

Animated version with additional information - since PJ can neither handle the size nor the text:

Animation, additional art and additional information

The paradoxical story of an ex-special task force firemage, who was nearly burned to death, and an ambitious woman who runs a whorehouse in a patriarchal empire.

My try at creating modern looking pixel art graphics to be used as game art - the style is optimized to be displayed at a zoom of 200% (720p) or 300% (full-HD) - all stylistic elements are chosen to get the right balance between the oldschool retro feeling and what a modern gamer expects from a 2D game.
All graphics are designed to be used as game-art, so this means the whole style and quality is 100% realizable within game engines - nothing faked.

The art shown is a scene out of a conversation, additionally some pieces of the world and how the characters interact - the gif got quite big (7MB) even at 100% sorry if that causes problems.

full HD screens (they work perfectly as wallpapers - and they use NPA - I don't provide half finished ones, hope that's no problem for you)……

The shown artstyle I created is focused on emphasizing feeling and emotion and directly connected with the characters - the world is designed to be experienced as something unique and new -
not Fantasy, not SciFi, not Steampunk - but elements of the real world connected to those stereotypical styles within a parallel universe.

Very nice work

Thatas crazy good

Awesome architecture and disign!

HZoltan (Level 6 Major) @ 11/20/2014 13:54

When I see mockups like these, I wonder how much time would it take to make a game in this level. It's very-very good - and I try to avoid the word 'perfect' - but is there the money and time for this? Just a rhetorical question, I don't want argue.

AshCrimson (Level 5 Detective) @ 3/16/2014 03:45

Amazing scene.

They do say "don't read the comments section" right? :/

Wolfenoctis (Level 8 Cannibal) @ 2/19/2014 21:24

Well deserved 1st place, congratulations

lunarhiro (Level 1 Rookie) @ 2/19/2014 17:04

Oh I'll click you gently alright. ;D

Gecimen (Level 11 Sphinx) @ 2/19/2014 14:15

Not sure it would be a nightmare to light this by pixel. Actually I can think of very stylish lightings, such as a blinking street lamp and stuff. That transparent glow just doesn't work for me, but it's just me.

Congrats btw, well deserved, by far.

jalonso (Level 11 Godfather) @ 2/19/2014 09:22

Let this be a lesson to all.
Gradients and CGd FX = Sent back/flamed/ignored.
Pure pixels with links = 1st Place for the month and over 100 faves.

Retronator (Level 5 Assistant Manager) @ 2/10/2014 16:29

Thanks for the link, I'm interested in exactly these kinds of things. I played around with such lighting a few years ago and I hope to soon start working on a project that will expand on that.

I admit I was not aware of games from the 90s that would use such visual styles. If you have concrete examples, I would love to check them out. I'll send you a private message, so we don't get off-topic here.

Metaru (Level 8 Brigadier General) @ 2/8/2014 13:29
no offense taken. but really believe you need to expand that vision of pixel art you have right now, because using alpha layers to generate a better sense of ambient ligthing is as old as back in the 90's.
hence why, not "exactly expanding the artform but merely a cost effective way to reproduce the effect". cost effective because it would be nightmarish to reproduce the same effect by hand and it doesnt really require as much effort as asing layer opacities where defined lightsources are.

I believe a "expanding the artform" kind of deal would be more suited to something like this.

Retronator (Level 5 Assistant Manager) @ 2/4/2014 19:45

Metaru, we can have different views on whether this is or isn't expanding the artform for us (and that's perfectly OK). The enhancement of the ambient to me subtly changes the feeling of the image — in a way that was not possible (and then for some time not thought of) in pixel art. Cyangmou's works such as this or his Super Londo Bros personally strike me as something new (or rarely seen), making steps on the edges (and beyond) of what I've seen so far, so to me that expands what results (feelings, styles) I imagine when I think of pixel art. My excitement for this in no way tries to intrude on however you feel about it.

4red (Level 2 Flatfoot) @ 2/4/2014 14:06

this is top stuff

Metaru (Level 8 Brigadier General) @ 1/30/2014 23:17

except there is no "expanding the artform" going on that version, merely a fancier, cost effective way to enhace the ambient by means of using a CG gradient.

dont overpraise it for what it isnt.

MyO (Level 1 Rookie) @ 1/29/2014 04:38

This font is amazing. 0.0

Retronator (Level 5 Assistant Manager) @ 1/28/2014 15:39

I approve of the pure and the modern light effects version. I'm glad there are people who try to expand the artform towards less explored territories. Keep them coming!

Alex Pang (Level 7 Underboss) @ 1/27/2014 14:40

I'm digging everything about this, and yes the NPA looks better IMO.
Been folowing this piece for some time, and I can't wait to play this!

wishuponapixel (Level 6 Hitman) @ 1/27/2014 12:18

You have a very good sense of contrast in your works. Loving the colors too.

Cyangmou (Level 9 Federal Agent) @ 1/27/2014 12:03

yeah, that looks good.

I will work on implementing that once I am able to get back to it =)

ErekT (Level 3 Hatchikyu) @ 1/27/2014 01:40

I think some subtle sub-pixelling will work. Just enough to let the viewer know that the jaw is in on the action.

But it's no big. Looks good regardless.

CELS (Level 7 Lotus) @ 1/26/2014 23:08

Again, great work with this. Glad you posted it here.

Not to open a can of worms / add fuel to the fire, but I actually prefer this "2005" version they made you submit. Not because I'm an anti-NPA crusader, but in this particular case, I think the version without NPA works better with the style.

Regardless, I hope you post more stuff from this game in the future.

skeddles (Level 11 Sphinx) @ 1/26/2014 19:22

Damn this is pretty, very professional.

MysticKirby (Level 1 Gangster) @ 1/26/2014 19:14

Absolutely amazing! The pink works really well with the muted green background.

Cyangmou (Level 9 Federal Agent) @ 1/26/2014 17:29

@ErekT: I tried it, but it looked shitty, I can't say if it's just the angle of her face why it dont works or if a jaw movement for anime characters looks bad. Maybe it was not the best designchoice to draw her lips quite realistical and animate it that way, but not to sure. SInce it's a concept stuff might change once I have better ideas.

Cyangmou (Level 9 Federal Agent) @ 1/26/2014 17:27

@Harrison K: yeah reddit has a more modern approach to pixelart, so I don't had any problems uploading it there =)

Dastal (Level 3 Hatchet Man) @ 1/26/2014 08:24

Probably one of my favorite pixel art piece ever.

RAV (Level 1 Rookie) @ 1/25/2014 19:34

"state of the art" game graphics.

Mandrill (Level 9 T-rex) @ 1/25/2014 12:11

It is really, really well done and tells an interesting story. I like how you di the gorund tiles and details, they blend in very nicely.

The only thing that bothers me a bit is the anatomy of Creya's torso. The collar bone and shoulders just don't look right. Everything else is top notch!

Gecimen (Level 11 Sphinx) @ 1/25/2014 09:47

I haven't seen the NPA version of this, but guess it was glow&shades and stuff.

This version doesn't take away from the beauty. This is an excellent piece, so much talent in many things at once.

Mutley (Level 1 Depressed) @ 1/25/2014 09:38

Oh, i forget my comment for the Pixel Art...

This work is awesome, i like the car ;)

cure (Level 11 Pixellite) @ 1/25/2014 09:19

NPA is a silly term and should be discontinued.

Cyangmou: Nice work on the car and cobblestone.

ErekT (Level 3 Hatchikyu) @ 1/25/2014 08:39

Fantastic stuff!

I'd animate the chin and maybe cheeks a bit along with the mouth for speech. Looks a bit freaky with just the mouth moving.

Zizka (Level 10 Deep Blue) @ 1/25/2014 05:34

Weekly spotlight incoming.

It looks superb Cyangmou, really.

buloght (Level 6 Centaur) @ 1/25/2014 04:34

Awesome job!  Love the typewriter idea.

EvilEagles (Level 5 Detective) @ 1/25/2014 03:36

Gorgeous @_@;

cececharlieee (Level 3 Stalker) @ 1/25/2014 02:13

holy ! this is too fabulous.

consistent and neat style.

shmupstick (Level 7 Sheriff) @ 1/24/2014 23:45

Mindblown! Truly.

Rayovatron (Level 6 SWAT) @ 1/24/2014 20:51

Holy fuck

_Connor (Level 5 Assistant Manager) @ 1/24/2014 20:15

The .gif is amazing, but the typewriter is a bit too slow, thought i can't think of a reasonable fix for that besides only animating the typewriter once for each word, which would probably suck.

Chrispy (Level 7 Sheriff) @ 1/24/2014 20:03

This is absolutely amazing

Mutley (Level 1 Depressed) @ 1/24/2014 18:22

@Jalonso Thank you for the information and the light really does not seem PA... :s

jalonso (Level 11 Godfather) @ 1/24/2014 18:03

@Mutley, NPA means Not Pixel Art.
Note that this piece is pixelart but the glow on the lights and possibly the text too makes this a hybrid (NPA) which is the only reason it does not suit a pixelart gallery.
We have no problem and even encourage placing hybrid versions of pixels in the description as we like to see and admire them too and sometimes it gives you the art in context.

@Cyangmou, in policing and managing all the reports I have totally failed to mention that this project is awesome, the art, the GUI, the text and especially that car.

Mutley (Level 1 Depressed) @ 1/24/2014 17:55

Hey guys, what is NPA? '-' (I'm newbie D:)

jalonso (Level 11 Godfather) @ 1/24/2014 16:03

@DB, read reply to Hiuru.

jalonso (Level 11 Godfather) @ 1/24/2014 16:02

@Hiuru, This was added by accident before reviewing. I have PMd Cyangmu to update with the pixel version in the description and place this piece in the description. Because he has been a long standing PJer and respected and admired by most and becuase no malice was intended we are giving him like 24 hours (he's in the western side of Europe) or so to update so that we don't have to send it back.

Hiuru (Level 5 Killer Klown) @ 1/24/2014 15:25

I'd hate to be that guy but this is so unfair. Other people that submit pixel art with NPA are automatically denied and told to change and fix their piece but this was added with no issue. What should be posted is the original without NPA...not trying to bash but....

I do like the piece but again, what should have been submitted was the original pixel without NPA - like others have said.
