Lovely!
Grass isn't that bad at all, maybe just too even and dense. Also you missed the opportunity of the tail shadow to define grass blades, as I mentioned in a previous comment ;)
Colors are nice but the palette as a whole needs more hue shifting and neutrals for integration. Blue-green transition is ok but blue-brown and green-brown are harsh. Also all colors have similar saturations.
Composition is well balanced. The fish (great pixeling!) could be raised a few pixels so as not to be tangent to the water line; and surrounded with more waves to make it stand out better. The river bank is too straight and even and looks unnatural.
I don't get the blue lateral highlights on the cat: they would only make sense if there was a strong, blue light source almost behind it, like in the thylacine piece. Also it could not possibly impact the left-side leg. Such a light might make sense in a swimming pool coming from below, but not in a river. Finally light on the tail comes from the left, while its shadow is cast by a top-down source.
Oh thank you very much, and that's a much better idea, I'll definitely try that next time I pixel water! And nice reference! :D
The grass gives this piece a nice sense of depth. Don't know if the darker blue is needed on the water at all... maybe just where it meets the shore, to give an impression of transparency? Heh heh HORF
Thank you both! And oops, I see what you mean, can't believe I didn't notice that.
Love the water. The only major issue I see is the upper part of the torso fades in with the background
Thank you Manupix, you always have such fantastic crits! I'll take everything you said into account, especially the hue shifting!
