I might start paperdoll tonight, so you'll see a lot more player sprites and NPCs in the near future. As for monsters and animations which are currently my weak point, I'm hoping to get this project on Kickstarter for funding to help me with some of these tasks.

I think your trees could be more interesting.  Also I noticed they are mirrored down the center - which is fine but I think that might contribute to the blandness.

Just visited your site and bookmarked it.  I liked some of your older tiles (mainly the floors in some of the buildings) but I understand your problems with it and why you've gone with this softer style.  Anyway I like the colors on all of these - how they're all slightly different but clearly from the same world.  I think the seashore one is my favorite.

When will you be showing us monsters & what-not?
