Nice, but looks unfinished: the crown has more detail and texture than the rest, especially the face, which fails at attracting the viewer's eye. This is probably what makes it hard to read, more than lack of contrast. Also many many colors.
I dig the cartoony style. Could use a bit more contrast to increase the readability, through.
