You didn't google negative spacedid you? If there was background there it would likely just create noise and draw attention from the focal point.
I used references, yes. None were exactly like this, though.
I don't know, it could at least had given more in depth to what is in the ocean, maybe another creatue, or more bubbles, something to eat least give the viewer a sense "yes, this is the ocean, and not just space"
It isn't showing nothing. It's giving the piece balance and form. Go and google Negative space.
The space is making the viewer more aware of the dark dark blackness of the deep ocean.
