I'll work on the metal! Usually, I work on my stuff so much that by the time it gets into the gallery, I'm sick of it and don't have motivation to incorporate any feedback. This time, I submitted it to the gallery a bit sooner, which I think was a smart move.
@king_bobston: I'm the Lucky Luke of Pixel Joint. And no, I didn't change the colors and contrast, but when I read your comment, I started to wonder myself. I think it's just because it's darker outside now, so the low saturation looks better on the screen, actually.
No worries, cheers for taking my suggestions into account :)
Looks better now in my opinon.
What I mean by highlights is that most of your characters and vehicles seem to have midtones as your highest value and the robotic/metallic stuff is lacking specular lights. All of this combined makes the red look more like clay.
Warcraft 1 you say? Yep, odd perspective indeed.
It's kind of scary when you reply while I type a minor edit...
Ah, thank you! I'm surprised I missed it, and surprised I did that in the first place.
Also, did you edit the colors/contrast? Seems to pop more than I had remembered.
@ king_bobston: Meteors and asteroids don't have souls. So it's ok to kill them. Same as kittens.
I've tried to fix the weird-for-the-sake-of-being-weird roof/stair in the upper left now.
Whoops sorry, meant the upper left. There's a part that comes down to the floor at two different angles.
"non-violent"... think about how these "dangerous objects" view this! Flying around space, minding your own buisiness when suddenly you're shot.
Ok, more serious: I think Dr D means upper left. At least that roof/stair/don't know doesn't make sense to me the way it is.
@ Dr D: In regards to the colours, thanks! I was worried about that. I'm not sure I understand what you mean about the roof though. There is no sloped roof in the upper right of the picture. The upper right building just has two levels, like a two-layered cake.
Thanks for your comments, guys
@ADrawingMan: Those are actually people. The big ones are robots. But I can see why people would confuse the two, since they're both humanoid, yet the robots have more human proportions.
@Mr.Fahrenheit: Thanks, I like the way like Yoda you speak
@Mandrill: Much appreciated! I've gone and added some shadows, which is something I thought about before, but I didn't want to make any shadows that would take away from the illusion that this was built with 32 x 32 tiles. Where do you feel I need more highlights? Everywhere? Or should I just sharpen the ones I already have?
People keep telling me this is a weird perspective, which is a bit surprising to me. My inspiration was the first Warcraft game
I dont know why but this picture reminds me starcraft missions on starships or in laboratories.
Very nice, I also like the planet in the background, the colors were well chosen, they stand out enough to be interesting but don't take away from the (hypothetical) interactive game elements.
I also agree that drop shadows would improve the depth in this piece dramatically.
One nitpick, the sloped roof (?) in the upper right of the picture has disagreeing perspective issues.. the bottom is at a 45 degree angle and the top is at a 22.5 degree angle.
That is a really odd perspective but you somehow made it work (Awesome 45° lines!). I like the boxy style you have going here I bet that would work damn well ingame.
The backround is certainly subtile enough to support the rest of the scene. Colours and overall shading look very good. Designs are fresh and interesting. The menu on the right is flippin' brilliant!
The only thing I have to criticise is the lack of highlights and drop shadows, the whole thing looks a bit flat without those two.
It is an extremely terrific piece nonetheless! Going to fav it right after I hit the 'post it' button to be honest. ;)
I like the hue shfiting on the planet you used.
Hrhr, cool. Can't wait to see the changes, chap! :)
