i understand the medium well, but i see no issue with sloppy pixels when the pixels are still being emphasized by their sloppiness. I love this piece and think it is 100% pixel art
I think this is quite close to being pixel art. At a glance, it looks sloppy, but it's not really that sloppy. However, I think some parts of the background in particular are too simplistic and random compared to the rather detailed mask in the center. There's also a bunch of isolated bright orange pixels spread around the image, and I'm not sure they're adding anything useful. It just looks sloppy.
It's a very interesting piece though. The unusual choice of colours is especially nice, and it adds to the overall otherworldly feel of the piece. I wish you would clean this up, because it would make a nice addition to the gallery if accepted.
