I pretty much picture this as a Game Over screen. To be honest, this kinda makes me feel pretty sad :( Especially when I listened to "A desolate world" from Chrono Trigger while making the sprite of my OC to put in there, and I even felt like actually crying...

Weekly Challenge: Nintendo Frankenpalette
Well, not really. I did hear of Lovecraft and maybe Lovecraft mythos, but I've never really read them, so it's probably a coincidence. I relied purely on imagination and I looked at a couple of references for some things like the turtle shell-shaped base, and I didn't even think of Lovecraft to be honest.
However, one of the references I put in my piece is a game that was inspired by a Lovecraft quote, if that makes sense. :P
