The fact that there is a guy running through the scene, looking fairly chirpy, as you put it, just ruins the idea of desolate to me. The composition doesn't leave much room to imply anything is desolate. The giants to me just read as humans in the foreground. The guy running looks like he's running along the horizon.
Great so I can count on your vote! In response to your comment:
The word sombre:
Here's a couple of the definitions of desolate:
3. | without friends, hope, or encouragement; forlorn, wretched, or abandoned |
4. | gloomy or dismal; depressing |
So depressing = sombre. I'm sorry if the description is a little confusing but I can't edit a challenge entry.
Fitting the theme:
Forlorn looking giant corpses rotting in the sun. Fairly desolate. The slightly chirpy little dude is because it's a retro pallette so I wanted a retro chap running in to the zone :)
The Theme is desolate, not sombre...
This doesn't really read as desolate or "long forgotten" to me.
Fair observations. Thanks very much for them. I should never have put the guy in really.
Now you've said that about the chap being on the horizon I can't unsee it. I CAN'T UNSEE IT! There's only 1 frame where he actually appears in front of the cross and the choppy animation means 99% of people won't even notice it.
I need to take more time over things like this and not be so eager just to get it done and in.
