I am in shock... This is amazing, what you were able to accomplish with this palette blows my mind. Every part of this piece is so detailed and fun to look at.. You definitely won. Great work dude.
Actually, the effect happened purely by chance ;P. Thanks man!
Made me think my screen was blurring pixels for a minute! Nice effect.
First off, thanks for the helpful criticism!
"for one, the edges should be lower, not higher, considering the perspective"
I actually had the edges going down for my first few version but it didn't feel right for me. I would have AAed the edges of where the horizon line meets up with the city but I don't have the right colour to do that :( I'm not sure what you mean about the footsteps though. Perhaps I should've gone with a straight line to divide the city and the desert though.
As for the ship throwing off the composition, maybe if I put some bigger buildings on the right part of the city would maybe balance everything (after looking at it again, there does seem to be more things in general on the left side of the picture than the right).
Using the darker grey as the sky is an interesting idea but I don't think it would work right, the gears would be better suited staying darker so that it gives off the feeling of being behind the robot (perhaps that is just me though). I'm also a bit confused about whatcha mean by the sun, there is no sun O_o!(unless you mean the gears behind the robot)
A boatload of thankyou for the crits in general though! (highly doubtful, but I'll see if I can get around to editing it, but I'll definitely be examinging the piece more throughly again)
First of all, I love how you gave the giant/city the blurred vertical edges, it gives it a really nice soft/mirage-like feel. Overall the sprite work is great, the ship, clouds, and sun are all very detailed and striking.
What I don't like is the divide between the foreground and the background - it feels like two separate pieces that you just kinda jammed together. The city does not blend into the ground well at all - for one, the edges should be lower, not higher, considering the perspective. The figure/footsteps do help blend the two (besides looking cool) but it's not enough imho. The ship also throws the composition off a lot by putting such weight on the center/left that isn't balanced anywhere else.
As an aside, I wonder what would have happened if you had used the darker gray for the sky and the lighter gray for the emblam behind the robot/the sun. I think the redness of the sun draws a little too much attention. Of course it'd be harder to blend it in with out the two shades of red and you did do a really nice job of that...
Anyways, overall it's a great piece and I can definitely see myself voting for it.
Whoaaaa, thanks for the support peeps! I'm really glad you all like it :)
Unless there are somehow 3 pieces even more cool than this then it certainly gets one of my votes.
Wow great stuff. I love the hazy / blurry buildings in the background. Very well done!
Don't be too hard on yourself.
It looks fantastic. And things like the footsteps and depth of field effect/distortion are a really nice touch.
This looks cool, I like the flicker effect (no idea how it's called) you did.
Very nice. A lot of details. The robot, the footsteps,...
This looks amazing! I can't see the hate for the palette, all of the entries so far have made it look so cool!
I think your screen is broken
Haha, just joking, that's great that an effect like that happens though!
