I think that you've picked the wrong colours as mids which has led to weak shadows and highlights. The hue/value shift should be far stronger.

Thanks Mandrill, I'm trying to get better. Bearing in mind I'm using the DB32 pallette, what colour changes would you have made? Or are you referring to the lack or primary colours as used in advance wars as the colours were taken more from the snes game.
Even though colours could be better the actual pixel work is quite good. It certainly has an Advance Wars vibe.

Lovely edit, whilst I doubt even with a free reign I would have got to the colours you selected or managed to create a similar effect , I think I was slavishly trying to use similar colours to the snes game baddie. I'll think twice next time, thanks for taking the time to edit.
