Wow very smooth and well animated ! It could be a bit faster and more bouncy tho, since it's a mouse
Looks almost pre-rendered. Very smooth.
The fur would be a little more crisp with fewer colours and more "tufty" clusters.

About your doubt with the colors, I think you could do just fine with 7 + transparency colors only without losing quality.
About the sprite itself, I think I'm in love with it.
I have no idea what to add… the animation is fluid, all movements are perfectly synchronized, this is just… I… love it.
