No they don't. This is Sonic-inspired. And the checker pattern is not copyrighted by Sonic. It has been used all over the world in various places, for example the popular game "Chess". Take a look: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Check_(pattern)
Very reminiscient of the Blue Blur's debut game, right down to the color scheme. I love the "spiky" tree and bush designs. 
The spikes look pretty weird to me. Great otherwise
