Well, you... stirred up quite a hornets nest of controversy on this one--old chap. A splendid after-dinner piece with a flavorful choice of colors.

  Man this is really cool.  I totlly dig the use of colours, t reminds me of a camera angle out of resident evil (Boihazard).  I can almost see Cris running past shooting zombies. :)

I thought is wasn't pixel art until I looked closely.   It requires some skill to get it that real.   5/5 + fav.

but the fact that several pixels look very randomly put and that the aa of the bushes and walls look to smooth/random to be handmade let me tend 70:30 to 'there was a photo involved.. somehow'

Of course everyone thinks you traced it just because its really good. Think of it as a compliment. SOME people cant stand competion. Do more like this! :)

Well it looks exactly like a traced photo. Why do I say that? Because you see some typical features of a wide lense(I think that's how it is called in english(?)) like the warping of this post/column thing. That kinda thing doesn't usually turn up first in your mind when you create a scene. Whatever. That's just the shapes I mean I very well believe you when you say you textured it yourself(didn't check it out). It's not a shame or something to admit that it's a traced photo - although you would learn much more creating the scene all by yourself. Again - whatever I don't intend to piss you off here it's just: we're not blind here man...

I know my stuff and if I had to guess, this is partly photo-trace. I feel very strongly about these things and I've gotten in a lot of arguments especiall in pj about people who trace or colourreduce pictures. I feel it's hurting the medium. Did no good for the demoscene either. I can't tell what the extent of reworking is, but please submit reference pics when you use them anyway.

It's not that this is great. It's not. I'm not jealous of your mad skills or anything so I'm trying to bring you down. This just looks like a photo job, sorry.

I'll have to go with Lawrence here, too.  I think that he wouldn't waste a reputation like his by just color reducing.  There's nothing in the actual pixels that show that this is anything but hand-pixeled.  The dithering isn't random, lines are straight where they need to be straight.

That being said, the composition/lighting of this piece is beautiful.  I think Lawrence did a great job capturing the feeling of dusk.  I'm surprised that he says he didn't use ANY reference pics, but if there's no evidence that it wasn't 100% hand pixeled, and if Lawrence says that it's 100% hand pixeled, then why can't it be 100% hand pixeled?

Didn't mean to be offensive either, but the first impression i got was that this is a color reduced photograph.

Oh and I don't think realistic = good, I think "realistic" is unimportant in pixel art. But suite your self.

this is pixel art, and i applaud you lawrence, i had no idea this was your work.  At first glance i thought it was a n00by color reduction, however after zooming and analysing i could easily tell this was pixelled.  I must say those railings are awesome, hope to see more in this style from you.

I side with lawrence...it looks pixeled enough for me, the dithering appears definitely handmade and the craftmanship is great, ref pic or not is the question, but I'd say a job well done.

I didn't mean to offend, but honestly. This piece has some very random points that look very much like it has been simply worked into. Also, the palette looks like you just took the colours from a jpg'd image. If this is REALY pixeld, I think that your other PA's don't show any of the skills portrade in this piece and you must have improved dramaticly in past week or so. I still stand by my origional thoughts, but I don't mean any disrespect.

I know you been through this but, unfortunatly, i cant believe you actually made that one from scratch. There are several details in the picture that I find exceptionally hard to believe could come from human imagination. I know some people have the skills to do it, but its so rare, that I cant get past the idea. Dont take my lack of faith offensively, it IS a wonderful piece regardless of how you made it. The photo realism is out of this world. But how proud you should be about it, its for you alone to know =) (5 out of 5)

Toby and Badassbill, this is made from my imagination and is 100% pixelled from scratch. I had thought that I'd chiselled out a reputation for myself here at PJ, and thus I’m deeply offended (especially by you Badassbill) that I even have to state that what I make is real. Toby, my “other work” as you put it, is deliberately not meant to be realistic like this piece is. I like to try out different styles all time and it’s kind of sad that you must think realism = best, when it’s not, no style is the best, so please don’t try comparing them.

Anyway, with all of that load of bollocks out of the way, I’ll describe it a bit. I spent most time on the shiny railings; this did begin as a reflection study. The reason the background has more intense AA is to create a blurred effect, because I wanted it to look as if the railings were in focus, to try and create a DOF type of thing. I used to do this a lot in my drawings/paintings back when I was doing my Art GCSE.

I did the foreground floor and the brick walls last, (and spent the least time on them) because I’d basically finished what I’d set out to make, and those bits weren’t important in this piece. I always get impatient when a piece comes near to the end of it’s production. I spent many, many hours on this, but I managed by listening to some Godspeed You! Black Emperor for most of it! :)

Aiko, you just have to compare this to his earlier work to see that it's not 100% imaginary. And calling it a traceover is hardly being negative if that just happens to be the first impression you get when you look at this?

Yeah shure, the colors are nice and dithering is great and whatnot, but what's the point if it just looks like a color reduced photograph? But hey, that's just me, I could be horribly wrong..

i have one question: why must everyone be so damned negitive? give the the guy some credit. i hate it when people always bash others without knowing. maybe he's just really good at knowing the  lighting and dithering. props for being photo-realistic :)

If you used a ref pic, i'd love to see it.  Very smooth dithering, nice job.

I'm not saure if this is real or not, there are some parts that seem pixeled, though some also seemed faked, but I guess this can be achieved by reducing the colors and editing it.

A "3" for now, until I'm sure if this is real or not. If it is, then a 5 for you.

Set it to a low colour in graphics gale and work into it, I'm not impressed or fooled.
