Dithering on the head works well, simulates a shaved head&face.
On the body, it looks interesting, nostalgic-y looking, but not helping the piece otherwise.
As far as dither goes there is really not a lot to learn. Same for AA, really. the rest is just general art practises, even clusters to some extent, they are just more pronounced in pixelart.
My main problem with Dan's stuff is that I find it quite clunky, and I don't like PS for pixelart a lot. But that is beside the point.
@ptoing.
that's true.
I just say what that brush tools and dith tools, are bad for pixel art tech learning.
when I say tech, is just AA, dithering styles, shading and many other shading techniques.
well, how you said, if you know all of that techs, Mmm. just use it at your own risk.
but, that's only my opinion. I don't like it.
Are you aware that ditherbrushes have been available in software from the early 90s? Also, if you use brushes like that you know exactly what the outcome will be. Please don't tell me that you think placing loads of pixels by hand to make a 2 colour checkerboard dither is something you think is worthwhile doing when you can do it really fast with a ditherfill or a dither brush.
Where I agree is that from just using Dan's workflow you wont learn much about good AA practise and clusters the like, but I can see where it might be helpful if you already know all that stuff and are comfortable with the workflow.
That said, while the orc looks pretty nice, if generic, the dither here is pretty bad and does not work very well (unless you are viewing it on an old CRT screen perhaps)
I keep wanting this to be Shrek when I see the preview in the gallery
The piece is amazing, buddy. good work.
I'm looking at that HD index post, and... I do not agree with it. I don't know but, I think the brush, AA and dith help tools are bad for learning about PArt. .
just look at this. thats frustrating.
This is a huge jump in skill from your previous work. I like the dithering as well.
I actually meant the white highlights on his brow, nose, and upper lip - they look unrefined to me. I'm fine with the white background, I doubt the anti-aliasing would have worked otherwise.
- Looks finished to me. The unfinished because of the white background seems to be a belief here in the pj commnity. I guess some can't get over? Everything they desired was accomplished, isn't that enough? -
Technique works quite well, which is surprising as it's generally not avisable to put so much dither into a picture. The only thing I would fix is the use of white, which is a bit sloppy and looks unfinished.
Lovely <3 I really like that you mixed dither with smooth cluster..
Really nice. Colours, anatomy, composition, technique; all spot on.
Reminds me a lot of 90's color printing on comic books.
