Pretty version here.

Quells, the developer of the amazing action/adventure/RPG Phoenotopia asked me and a few other artists to have a crack at developing some prototype areas for the sequel, so this is my attempt!

In his own words:
Earth Dome - The Collectors built a small replica of Earth in which to house the captured NPCs from the first game. The Earth biome is a dense forest with thick trees, swamps, and even bigger frogs. The collectors attempted to recreate the forests of Earth, but have created something closer to the forests of Earth's prehistoric era. Creatures grow to a more dangerous and unnatural size - giant bugs fill the air. The forest is also wired with cameras and radars - equipment the collectors use to monitor their captured species. The biome is a mixture of nature and technology - it's not unusual to find the occasional metallic tree or radar and camera equipment.

EDIT: Yes the background is very lazy and unfinished. If this job goes through I'll do a proper background.

Love the tech, circuit thing going on with the trees making it feel like a simulation.

I love the vibrancy of the colours.  this really brings me back to gaming in the 90s.  back when colours were colours and there was only one brown.  :)

Looks amazing. I even love the single-color layers in the BG.

Looks neat, great job! I especially like the little cameras and the other technological elements scattered around the image.

I loved the first game, this is really amazing. :O

I could definately see Phoenotopia becoming the next cavestory.

Funnily enough that was one of the references. :P

Omg colors looks fantastic.. The piece reminds me of  Megaman x1  StingChameleon Stage with the tech forest theme...  It bring  good  memories..

I love forest levels and this one is an amazing example.  Very clever tree platforming, and the tech theme ads interesting flavour for the whole image.

Yeah, it's rediculous over there. It's around 40 to 50 percent non pixel art and stolen or edited sprites.

user
Goodlyay (Level 6 SWAT) @ 11/2/2014 12:00

Personally I love the background. With very detailed tilesets like this, it creates a nice contrast and makes the scene not as messy to have a simpler background like this.

user
NoeL (Level 1 Rookie) @ 11/1/2014 18:02

Yeah, I had thought that myself actually, but this isn't the finished tileset. It's just a mockup to get a feel for the area - hence the lazy background and "layer 2" trees just being squished versions of the foreground trees too. New ground tiles is also on my list of improvements.

user
eishiya (Level 6 SWAT) @ 11/1/2014 14:51

If the first game looked this good, I probably would have gotten further in it xP

My one complaint is that the tree leaf-platforms and the ground leaves being the same just doesn't look right to me. I'm all for tile reuse, but reusing tiles in such different contexts within the same scene (one typically expects different kinds of greenery between the ground and the canopy) draws attention to the reuse in a negative way.

Very good job! In my opinion, the background is ok for this type of platformer game. You can see foreground sprites perfectly that way.

- It all looks super amazing~ my only complaint is the super straight trees in the back. -

skittle (Level 9 Nidan) @ 10/31/2014 13:14

Oh, I had no idea, my bad then. I wish they would at least make a new pixelart category for pixelart+other ditigal art tricks if that's the case.

@Zizka

I'm just so unpredictable :P (and I was wrong, ignore that)

user
Carnivac (Level 8 Shodan) @ 10/31/2014 12:52

Actually yeah it was.   There have been several motions to clean up that category. for many years now. We're just fighting a losing battle because DA is so full of people who haven't a clue what pixel art actually is.

user
Mandrill (Level 8 Partner) @ 10/31/2014 11:04

Tasty!

Bitslap (Level 6 Manager) @ 10/31/2014 10:41

Holy shit. This is good!

You suprise me sir.

user
jok (Level 11 Master Assassin) @ 10/31/2014 09:21

looks beautiful

user
skittle (Level 9 Nidan) @ 10/31/2014 07:42

No one ever said the pixelart category on DA was only for 'clean' pixelart. So much pixelart goes into that category in DA that is not 'clean anyways', you shouldn't remove it... No one on DA cares about how people on pixeljoint like their pixelart clean :P

user
ParkerBabyDiaperCompany (Level 4 Team Leader) @ 10/31/2014 07:09

Contrast too high for characters and leaves imo.

user
elend (Level 3 Private Eye) @ 10/31/2014 06:31

Man, that looks quite awesome. I especially like the colors here, with the subtle blues perfectly complimenting the bright greens. I don't mind the "bland" background very much, it still looks gorgeous and since it's a game the playability has also to be considered.

user
NoeL (Level 1 Rookie) @ 10/31/2014 05:44

I didn't realise the pixel art category was strictly for "clean" pixel art. Moved.

user
Carnivac (Level 8 Shodan) @ 10/31/2014 05:31

Looks very nice but.. the 'pretty version' using non-pixel art elements but you put it into DA's pixel art category even though people like me have been trying to clean up that section for years?  Not cool...
