Expanding upon my tileset thinking of yesterday, I wanted to see how many (or few) 4x4 tiles it would take to make a functional font, whilst still retaining readability. I managed to get mine down to 24. The only problem is that 0, 1, 2 and 5 are exactly the same as O, I, Z and S. The letters and numbers are at the top, while the actual tiles are at the bottom.

Neat idea. Just played around a bit with this and managed to keep it at 24 tiles but making it over all look nicer and minus the weird L.

You could chang your letter I to have horizontals bars at top and bottom or for the 1 put a pixel on the top left. for the O or 0 on one of them you could take the four corner pixels away. For the Z move the bottom brown pixel to the left and remove the two lighter brown pixels underneath. For the S try removing corner pixels to imply more of a curve.
