Some faint or misty clouds could be good. For how much texture and variety there is in the objects a single color background doesn't seem quite right.

It'd be cool to see the character with an idle animation so it would stand out more from the scenery.

yep, it brings the attention to the character with all that space around. it makes him/her a bit lonely too.And not because he/she is alone :)

I tried making my own palette but eventually caved in and used DawnBringer's. And it is delightful.

I personally like the empty space, it's well balanced. Clouds might make it look a little cluttered and distract from the little floating land. I like it, I like it a lot, nice palette and nice pixels :D
