Trying to learn and having some trouble understanding shapes and lighting. >.> Decided to just work my way up in size and make my fox icon colorized. Any criticism would be appreciated as well as tips for creating a pixel art from scratch.

Pretty cool! I think the head could be worked on to appear more fox-like - it's kind of big, I think, and the eyes lack any personality (or pupils, of course).
For creating a piece from scratch, I usually start out with a rough draft of the shape I'm going for (which might als obe a fully filled in silhouette for a single sprite), clean it, color it, shade it, and polish it. It works OK for me, at least.
