CELS - You may well be right. I tried to create dark rocky grooves with brighter and more visible spikes protruding from the creature, as if it had evolved in cavernous environments and was trying o blend into rocks. I know SNV wanted the eyes to be very different and visible to be able to cast various different effects, so I tried to create a variety there that might match a bunch of different spells while limiting the palette. So I made those the most bright and colorful parts.
