i agree with grave. using blue for shadows is good, but so blue isn't another shadow in that screen. plus, to be colored so blue like this trees, there would have to be a deep blue sea right under their leaves. or glowing stones. because it looks like they are floodlighted from beneath.

this is like zelda and l;ink

but i like it...

I disagree with grave.  The piece shows that it is close to turning night, so it only shows on the tallest objects in landscape.  That is, if thats what you were going for, Game Scene.

The trees are goddamn sexy when shown ut of context. But the blue of them is very out of place when shown in a scene like this.

It seems to me as though you made your own tileset and compiled this image together using RPGMaker200 (RM2K) I love this!  apart from the blue on the trees of course....

Apart from the tree's shadow (I see you've been inspired by SD3 =), everything else is really good.
I hope you finish your game, because it would be nice to see an  XP game with original graphics.

*on a different computer*
this monitor is cleaner and brighter than the one at my school, and the darkness issue is lessened (unless you edited :)

I tihnk what this really needs is unity.  Probably nix the blue or put it on everything, but even beyond that, the whole thing could use a common shadow color, i like gray/purple for this in most cases, but blue and red also work depending on the mood.  this color should be the color of the air, because peering through the actual molecules of air is what causes the off-coloring of the shadows (this one side of atmospheric perspective, one of the foundations of color theory; second only to light sourcing).  The application of this foundation will assit in achieving as i said before one of the most important goals of color theory, unification of color, which will pull the entire picture and tileset together.  Also, be sure NOT to aply this theory to the characters, as the straightness of their color will help them to pop out from the unified background.  Also, you will be able to save room on your pallet by making 4-5 colors the same.  All-in-all, i dont think theres a real drawback to trying it.  YOu may see therwise though, so bear in mind its only a suggestion :P

keep up the good work :D

A bit dark, and the colors seem a bit "stark." I dunno how else to describe what I mean. xD; This is a really amazing piece, though... a lot of wonderful detail. I especially like the bricks and the leaves on the trees~

user
Faktablad (Level 6 SWAT) @ 3/2/2006 14:16
I'd say drop the blue shadow too, because right now a source of blue light is nowhere to be found.  Perhaps you could try lightening the overall color of the grass and making it less texturey also.  Sweet job so far...can't wait to see the finished game.

Thanks everyone for the comments! Ya, I most likely will go back and drop the blue shadow on the tree and just do a normal one.

user
Adarias (Level 11 Bonsai) @ 3/2/2006 03:31
Sorry i only ment that is was essentially the same design, not a rip, its clearly a different tree

one thing that occured to me is maybe you could use the blue on the trees in other parts to make it settle in bette, at the moment it looks like it was used on the tree because thats how SD3 drew trees, and the rest has no blue because its not an interpretation of another game's work the way the tree is

user

The trunk of the tree isn't shadowed by the leaves... and it should be, in my opinion.

That's pretty awesome, though.

Very nice, very detailed tiles.

The blue on the trees is a very nice touch but I personally don't like it on your work. Your blues are just too bright and it goes from green to blue too sudden as Finite said.

Overall though it's very nicely done. A favourite in my book.

Excellent work!  Reminds me of those GBA adventure games.

wow! id like to try this game when its done, and it doesnt look to dark on my screen! defenent fav!

user
finite (Level 6 Serial Killer) @ 2/28/2006 18:24
Very solid work here, the detailing is sweet. Shading dark colours to blue is good, but I think it's a bit exaggerated and on the trees. Especially as you really haven't done it with any other pieces in the scenery. The transistion between green and blue is very sudden.

The high contrast leaves look great at high resolution, but are a bit stark when zoomed in, compared to the relatively low contrast detail in the house and the character.

Really great work here, I guess I'd just like to see some of the techniques used in the trees used elsewhere in the piece, for a bit more consistancy.

The grips I found are that his skins could make more contrast to reflex the BG's style and that what seems to be his shadow is not angled rightly if compared to ther est of the shadows AND the sprite itself. But these are so tiny near the rest of the piece.
Gotta love the leaves =D

Boder: Im making it in RMXP (I know I know, but im not programmer )

fil razorback: Nope just a old indie like the rest of ya.

Adarias: Ya some people tell me it's abit dark, but it doesnt look dark on my screen. I prolly just have my contrast turned up higher than most . The tree is very inspired from SD3, but it wasnt ripped (incase thats how I understood your post).

d-p: No mock up, ingame

Thanks for the comments everyone!

Looks like a enjoyable game mockup. Keep it on.

user
Adarias (Level 11 Bonsai) @ 2/28/2006 14:38
my only 2 crits are that its very dark (and theresfor kinda hard to see and harder than it should be to find the character) and that the trees are basically straight out of SD3 with some minor changes.  However, this is an excellent piece, and it shows a lot of promise.  nice work here :D

user
Boder (Level 2 Kukyu) @ 2/28/2006 13:43
This looks really great. I love games. What are you using to program and have you made any other games?

The blue shade on the trees gives a nice effect, but it is really drawing my attention. Maybe desaturate?
