Always take care of your bark and you will impress the troll ladies.....

For more than a month now, I've been trying to create something with pixels that looks like it was done in Ink. I love the way how sharp and distictinve this medium looks on paper.

After a few failures and enough testing I managed to get something on the canvas that was worth working on. I basically started with black and white and added 3 more colours to smooth it all out... merely ungodly amounts of AA to be honest. :)

This took me a lot longer to finish than the stuff I usual do, but it was a ton of fun nevertheless.

@ big_brother

Thank you very much, that means a lot coming from you. :)

There is, just one tile though. I reused the grey stripes you see along the outline, around the nose and on its chin.

@ air

Thanks a lot, buddy!

big brother (Level 11 Admiral) @ 11/27/2015 23:47

Stunning work! Very successful as both pixel and "ink." Besides the mirroring, is there any tile reuse here?

@ clefairykid

Thank you!

Sure, go ahead! I'd love to see your piece. :)

clefairykid (Level 9 Federal Agent) @ 5/21/2015 21:00

this is very inspiring, I'd also like to try out that pallette and ink style, although with some more organic and less symmetrical, if I could XD

scottiand (Level 5 Detective) @ 5/21/2015 15:49

Very cool! It does looked inked at first glance. The symmetry is a bit strange though.

Mandrill (Level 9 T-rex) @ 4/15/2015 06:55

@ bobo

Thank you very much, bob!

Haha, adulthood surely has its benefits.

Mandrill (Level 9 T-rex) @ 4/15/2015 06:52

@ Emperor

You are too kind, chap! Thanks a ton! :)

Mandrill (Level 9 T-rex) @ 4/15/2015 06:51

@ Vinsanity

Thank you very much!

Hehe, frankly stuff like this has been appearing quite often in my gallery. I love to pixel faces, eyes and anatomical features. Sometimes symmetry is just a great way to express these things easily.

That's cool, thanks a lot! It's just the best thing for an artist to hear someone getting inspired by their work:)

Mandrill (Level 9 T-rex) @ 4/15/2015 06:45

@ pixelarg

It's supposed to be a troll or something out of a fantasy novel. My main goal with this was to get some kind of ink effect going. This piece is more a technique experiment, but I get what you mean.

Mandrill (Level 9 T-rex) @ 4/14/2015 14:41

@ Daimoth

Thanks a lot! :)

Mandrill (Level 9 T-rex) @ 4/14/2015 14:40

@ Slemsvamp

I really didn't want to destroy the symmetry.

Mandrill (Level 9 T-rex) @ 4/14/2015 06:38

@ Zizka

Hehe, thank you!

king_bobston (Level 10 Capo) @ 4/11/2015 11:35

Quite an exploration of the medium and very impressive.

After reading CELS comment, it kind of reminds me of this.

Emperor_Pixel (Level 2 Flatfoot) @ 4/9/2015 16:00

The heck? This looks handdrawn!

Vinsanity (Level 1 Jukyu) @ 4/9/2015 12:50

wow, looks amazing!!! :) it sort of reminds me of groot from guardians of the galaxy haha :D

the symmetricity also makes it look a little more abstract and fresh:)

which leads me to a question: hasn't symmetric pixelart sort of become your signature thing? :D because I have been noticing, that your other works also feature symmetricity in some way ^^ either way your pieces of pixelart are very recognizable and unique :D seeing stuff like this really motivates me to keep going. again, great job

Pixelarg (Level 6 Yonkyu) @ 4/8/2015 20:21

Well, sorry but I dont like. To be a human face is disproportionate, too to be a goat or an animal like that, if it otherwise, has the widely spaced eyes . In any case, good details / patterns, but not complement the picture and do not help create a strong concept, as should use those things

Daimoth (Level 3 Stalker) @ 4/8/2015 17:44

Pixel art meets line art. I like it, superbly executed.

Slemsvamp (Level 6 Serial Killer) @ 4/8/2015 11:42

I think flipping one of either eyes horizontally would make sense.

Zizka (Level 10 Deep Blue) @ 4/8/2015 08:53

Now, you're talking!

Mandrill (Level 9 T-rex) @ 4/7/2015 12:02

This comment is all an artist can wish for! I feel flattered and cajoled.

Thank you ever so much! :)

Cynips (Level 4 Deputy) @ 4/7/2015 00:05

Oh man... This is one of my favourite (if it's not simply my favourite) pixel art ever!

This is absolutely awesome and gorgeous... I'm totally stunned. I have no words.

Your technique and the feeling of this piece are amazing...

Fantastic work! Keep it up!

Mandrill (Level 9 T-rex) @ 4/6/2015 12:39

Haha, too kind, Kat! Always great to hear you opinion, thank you very, very much. :)

I believe It's important to try out new and different things from time to time and leave the comfort-zone.

Mandrill (Level 9 T-rex) @ 4/6/2015 12:35

@ Natsu_Firefox

Woha, I think that goes too far. ;)

Thank you very much though!

rhlstudios (Level 6 Hitman) @ 4/6/2015 10:53

Wow. Wooooow, wow wow wow. This is simply stunning, like jaw-dropping stunning. This is inspiration incarnate. My god.

prof4d (Level 3 Stalker) @ 4/6/2015 01:29

I think that many of us have such things. Sometimes there are no ideas for the next picture or just want to experiment with some style and you can just relax, with an abstract painting without thinking about the end result.

Natsu_Firefox (Level 1 Private) @ 4/5/2015 18:54

Superb! Your profile has displayed some of the best art Ive ever seen.

Mandrill (Level 9 T-rex) @ 4/5/2015 17:46

@ -DE-

Thanks a lot.

I'd like to apply this style on something like a landscape or an original character. Enough mirrored faces for now though.

Mandrill (Level 9 T-rex) @ 4/5/2015 17:46

@ beetleking

Thank you, beetle! Glad you dig it. :)

Mandrill (Level 9 T-rex) @ 4/5/2015 17:43

Vielen, vielen Dank! :)

-DE- (Level 11 General) @ 4/5/2015 12:40

Good stuff!

Not something you'd do everyday, or more than once, really, but an amusing exercise.

Elk (Level 5 Assistant Manager) @ 4/5/2015 11:40

i like it very much

Mandrill (Level 9 T-rex) @ 4/4/2015 16:09

Awesome compliment, thank you very much!

No worries, glad you like it. :)

failureboy (Level 7 Assassin) @ 4/4/2015 15:08

I didn't think one could "pencil sketch" so well with pixels.  I want to try this.  Thanks for doing it.

Mandrill (Level 9 T-rex) @ 4/4/2015 14:22

I cannot unsee now.

Thanks a lot, man!

Mr.Fahrenheit (Level 6 Serial Killer) @ 4/4/2015 13:17
Yeah I saw the meditating person too lol.

Lovely work!

Mandrill (Level 9 T-rex) @ 4/4/2015 13:05

@ Finlal

Hehe, I'm starting to see all kinds of faces and weird bodies as well.

Mandrill (Level 9 T-rex) @ 4/4/2015 13:03

@ kuso

Them trolls, cheers. Jamie

Finlal (Level 11 Special Agent) @ 4/4/2015 12:48

Is it one of those pictures which becomes something different if you're looking upside down?
I see a bug sitting on a stub. was it drawn like this intentionally?

UPD. Always should read previous comments before posting yours.

kuso (Level 1 Rookie) @ 4/4/2015 12:43

A huge sexy thing staring at me.

Mandrill (Level 9 T-rex) @ 4/4/2015 12:42

@ Naji

Mandrill (Level 9 T-rex) @ 4/4/2015 12:41

@ Friend

Huuuge compliment! Thank you very much for that!

Yeah, throwing in some of these into the mix from time to time shouldn't be a shame.

Mandrill (Level 9 T-rex) @ 4/4/2015 12:40

@ ADrawingMan

Thanks a ton! Haha, nor am I.

I had to do it though... in order to keep my sanity. ;)

Mandrill (Level 9 T-rex) @ 4/4/2015 12:36

Thank you very, very much for the great reply.

Your are right. I tried to work with more hatching around the large shadows, but it really made the piece look too busy in the end. And, of course, it was harder to get a good texture that way.

Haha, that is awesome. I absolutely didn't do that on purpose. It's amazing what you found in there, it made me spill out my coffee all over the screen. Especially that Siddharta thing cracks me up! The other finds are too cool as well. The female thing reminds me of some kind of japanese mythical creature.

Keeping the highlight is more of a style choice, I didn't want to break up the symmetry.

Naji (Level 2 Hired Gun) @ 4/4/2015 12:30

Friend (Level 3 Hatchikyu) @ 4/4/2015 12:15

I think there's a place for mirrored art despite it being criticized usually. This is how it's done :]

mo love it

skittle (Level 9 Nidan) @ 4/4/2015 11:53

This looks stellar! Not a huuuuge fan of mirrored images, but this really takes the cake!

CELS (Level 7 Lotus) @ 4/4/2015 11:52

Ah, I love this style! Really fantastic! Reminds me of one of my early favourites. I think the use of large bright grey clusters removes the illusion of ink, but I suppose it was a compromise to create texture without removing the sense of volume.

What's really interesting about this piece is the Rorschach effect where I keep seeing different shapes. For example, I can not unsee this meditating, radiant Siddharta. Or this female... creature. Or this guy. If you didn't do this on purpose, it might be cool to explore this effect further. Just a crazy idea.

As a minor nitpick... it kind of bothers me that the highlights on the eyes are also symmetrical :)
