Keep your darker shadows to where light has a very hard time getting in. Armpits, right under the chin, those areas. Keep the shadows out of areas that are exposed, since light just bounces around and gets in those areas easily. Larger dark shadows have a place where you have a very concrete light source, but they look out of place on a base like this. Normally I'd suggest thinking about light and shadow and 3Dness, but I think in this case, it'd look better if you just worried about local shadows and didn't have any "global" shadows.
