HMS Exeter, the famous British cruiser. This ship was best known for it's part in the Battle of the River Plate, in which it together with two smaller British cruisers, Ajax and Achilles, engaged the German pocket battleship Graf Spee. In this battle, all ships on both sides sustained heavy damage, although none were sunk. But after the battle the Graf Spee was eventually scuttled by it's crew, because the ship was now stuck in South America with a broken fuel tank, low on ammunition, and the crew believed that more British ships were on the way. :)

But even though Exeter survived the encounter with Graf Spee, it was eventually sunk in the Second Battle of the Java Sea, facing overwhelming Japanese forces.
