Oh, I think I didn't express myself that well. The proportions and anatomy look great :) You definetely nailed them. I was speaking more about the finishing you gave to the face area opposed to the rest of the piece.
I’m still working on improving my overall anatomy skills, including perspective and proportions (the latter of which has always given me trouble, regardless of medium). Believe me, I spent at least a combined hour on the upper head outline alone.
The original image I worked from had some tricky lighting and perspective to work with, and given my skill level right now, I honestly believe I did the best I could with it. I really wanted to get the "main" areas (eyes/nose/mouth) right most of all, as I tend to have severe issues with getting those proportions and spacing right. (I know I didn't quite get it all the way right there, either.)
Having spent a significant amount of time away from pixelling on a regular basis, I needed something to get me back into a groove. This was that something. I appreciate both the criticism and the compliment, and I hope my next piece—whatever it may be—will help me work on my "problem areas". Thank you for your comment!
Looks great. You clearly gave a lot of love to the eyes/nose/mouth area.
You should give a little more love to the overall piece though, especially the outlines and the ear.
Eh, I used a bit more detail in constructing facial features than he normally does. I did so as a mix between his style and the tutorial linked to by Pixel Dailies—a balance between the two, so to speak.
Your compliment is appreciated, though.
You managed to capture Justin's style amazingly well.
Cool piece!
That was more in keeping with Justin's style, actually. Like I said, I kinda tried to get a balance between the tutorial's style and Justin's style; some spots got more of one “side” of that balance than the other.
