A fun little mockup I did using sprites from my M25 project. The idea was to take design choices from the later MOTHER games (animated backgrounds, in-battle characters) and apply them to an NES game.
In order to prevent sprite flickering, the menus, animated background and enemy sprites are all drawn on the background layer. The only things drawn on the sprite layer are the character sprites. The background is also incredibly light on tile usage, with the animation only needing 4 8x8 minitiles. :D
