THey are suppose to be patches of open dirt to break up the monotone pattern of the tiles, I was on the fence of using that or the other type of tile I had made.

Surprisingly enough, I only used 4 different shades of grey to pull it off. The percentage was an even 20%, 40%, 60%, and 80% black.

What are those underground noses supposed to be?

Those flow very well. What did you use to make them and how many colors did you use? 

For future reference on submissions, try to remove your "guides" you used to help you draw. Like the dots designating tile boundaries.
