Hi, this is a GBA game mockup, would like to know if you like it?
I also have another question for everyone, do you guys think 2D
games will still exist in 3-4 years or will they be replaced by 3D
games on devices like GBA and there will be no future for 2D ?
(by 2D I mean pixelart 2D without 3D simulated 2D).
Update : corrected girl's arms

well it's well over 3-4 years now, and it can be safely said now that 2D games are well alive in the wii and nds, aside from the crazy retro gaming revival that's been going on. :D

2D games are definitely going to exist. Have you seen Odin Sphere yet? It's beyond amazing:

The combination of 3D acceleration + 2D artwork is going to create a whole new class of 2D games.

Looks awsome that would be really cool to see as a real game

halfDemon (Level 6 Hitman) @ 6/29/2006 17:16
This is absolutely lovely.

If I like it? Meh, that's kind of obvious. However the backgrounds elements do not share the same technique and style from the characters and the girl anatomy is a bit weird. The rest is really OK to me, I specially like the guy's shading.

About 2D games... Man, for me, they'll never die. There will always be a way to keep their presence in the world of games, even with such perfect 3D games. Cellphone games, portables, even for next-gen platforms, such as PS3 (yes, I believe). Have you ever seen Namco vs. Capcom? They use SD sprites for the game, and very very very nice ones! And it's for PS2! In other hand, the technique demand for all pixel art fields will insanely big... You MUST be THE artist to work on such game projects,

Nice mock-up.

Cool, You've really got a simple interface.

I could turn this into a real game if you wanted

O: Damage 0

lol, I really like this, great mock-up.

looks heavily influenced by kenneth's stuff, no?

anyway looks nice, although the lightning strike coming out of a bright blue sky strikes me as a bit odd.

I think the tree shouldn't be so black. This way looks like the light came form back of the tree instead of top, like the other elements. A greyish color could look better since simulates the desaturation caused by the air.

pmprog (Level 4 Murderer) @ 3/15/2006 14:02
This is cool. But a couple of things with the background.
1. Why is the ocean/sea curved when the land isn't, it's kinda mixing perspectives
2. I think the water level is too high up on the screen, there needs to be more sky. To me it looks like their gonna be flooded by a tidal wave
Anyway, just my 2p's worth. Keep up the good work!

Definitely, especially since the idea of one on one RPG battles has always been really appealing to me (I'm actually working on something like this myself =) and the style going on is top notch.

user
Lex_2005 (Level 1 Rookie) @ 3/15/2006 12:18
Thanks all for your C+C. -DE- is right, when I tried to draw the tree in "full" colors it took
the eyes away from the central point of the screen, and it's not good for the game play.
Jalonso if you look closer you can still see some pixels that creates a really slighty
volume effect (mostly on the tree basis), instead of just dark area.
I'll correct her arms and improve other things.
I'd also like to ask everyone if you think this game worth a release? I'm currently
drawing the sprites and the game environment but would like to know the opinion
of people before I'll work further on it. I'm not a pixelart professional yet, but I hope
that by working on it I'll get more skills and the game will look a lot better when
finished :)

Leath (Level 2 Kukyu) @ 3/15/2006 12:10
This is really nice, I like the simplicity and happy colors :) And to answer the 2D vs 3D question, I believe that since there might still be platforms like GBA, or cellphone, there might still be pixel art around. But 3d might eventually take over as an easier form of art construction... There will always be 2D though, Im sure. But a lot like Futurama which many scenes are made in 3D programs. :)

user
Quar (Level 4 Murderer) @ 3/15/2006 12:04
Really nice. I don't really understand what's going on in the background, though.

user
-DE- (Level 11 General) @ 3/15/2006 11:41
I'm guessing the tree is like that because it's further back, and because it shouldn't draw much attention.
Anyway, this is really great. It's simple, but that where it's charm lies (less is more!).
My only gripe would be that I have no idea what's going on with the girl's arms. Other than that - pure ownage. People NEED to make more mockups, instead of submitting 5 minutes doodles, or even big, detailed sprites/portraits. Mockups will always be what I love in pixelart the most, and are, IMO, what can be considered the essence of pixelart <3
Six stars from me, and a fav!

Snader, yeah it was unintentional. The bg is an ocean (or sea), I'll check out for the lightness.

user
Lex_2005 (Level 1 Rookie) @ 3/15/2006 10:56
Bisque, she's wearing ... uhm... don't know the word in english :) she was based on Jess (a pixelart I did before this one) and she wears same *gloves* as Jess, but it's not boxing gloves, perhaps I'll change them to look smaller.
I also like more 2D games on small devices and I hope they will exist too, but with new
capabilities of the phones some guy at IGN said that it will change in 6 or 12 months,
I just don't want them to disapear from the market like MS-DOS games did (not at 100% though).

user
PixelSnader (Level 2 Peon) @ 3/15/2006 10:48

i'm sure this is unintentional, but the lighting icon looks like an ss-symbol.

sprites an=d stuff look spiffy, but i'm not too fond of the ocean (or perhaps hill) because it's not well balanced with things as lightness, and it's way above the horizon aswell

user
jalonso (Level 11 Godfather) @ 3/15/2006 10:43
2D games will exist as long as people create them and other people play them. I cherish my SNES. Your mock up looks good even though I don't understand why the tree is in silouette in such a sunny location. The upside down Vs on the hillside are distracting, perhaps its just the color on them.

user
Bisque (Level 3 Sergeant) @ 3/15/2006 10:33
I hope to god that 2D games will still exist. I will ALWAYS enjoy them more than anything 3D.

Anyways, I like the mockup :). Oddly enough the thing I like the most in it is the rock haha. I keep staring at it. Something I'm a bit confused about though is the girls hands. Is she wearing boxing gloves? It looks like she -could- be, but the one that is closest to us (we're seeing the back of the hand) looks to almost just be a black blob that is part of the clothing rather than being one of her limbs since you dont really see an arm attached to the hand.
