Impressive, and your descriptions are usually worth a read. Thanks for sharing.
While I like the Golden and Retribution arc most too, I've to disagree about it being stretched afterward. I think it comes more from the sparse updates than the actual content - since I can't recall a chapter in which nothing important happened.
There's a lot what I enjoy in Berserk. From the development of the characters to the artwork, there's too much to list. Overall it's my favorite manga and one of my favorite stories.
If you want some struggling and feeling of doom, Gantz is another good one (with horror elements, too). Blade of the Immortal also has fucked up characters that still manage to be sympathic and is well drawn. Claymore also has a lot of despair and some horror elements but I don't find it as well written later on. As far as horror itself goes, Junji Ito has made some good ones but for me it's a matter of mood to enjoy these as they are a bit... stupid in their obscenety I guess?
My favorite movie featuring breaking or struggling is Oldboy. The other two movies in "The Vengeance Trilogy" ("Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance" and "Sympathy for Lady Vengeance", they are not related to each other apart of the topic of Vengeance) are also really good but feature less of those themes.
I could go on and on about media featuring any of those themes, any of the ones I've listed or about the themes itself but I think I'll leave it at that ;)
So to stop my fanboyism and make me feel a bit more productive, let me add that I really dig your rendering with those almost black colors and the clothing design. I think this is my favorite design of this character yet.
Your fabric and metal always look fantastic, but this time you killed it! Superb stuff.
Berserk is pretty cool, I really love it.
If I think of Berserk, I think of woodcuts, a lot of Bosch, Escher and Central European Middle Age and a tons of other stuff I really like, so it's hard for me to escape it's fascination.
Miura surely did thoroughly research and it seems to me like one of the very few Japanese productions which truly communicate a believable western middle age feeling, the power of the church, visions of hell, lots of other stuff tales of nobles include.
the Japanese "over the top" aspects make it only better in my eyes.
Though I have to say that Berserks biggest flaw is most likely that it seems stretched and unfinihsed for no real reason. The first act, or the Golden Age Arc and Retribution orc seems to me like the most well thought out part of the story, with the strongest characters and the best overall flow. What comes after it feels very stretched and moved in a direction of classical fantasy, much more D&D or Tolkien like.
Since I am myself a big fan of horror it should be clear why I prefer the earlier stuff =)
I always make the effort to read descriptions!
Keep them coming!
Well, I'm one that read them.
Looks awesome. As I expect from someone with a lot of experience.
Well, i would say characters in videogames barely if ever get the same development than in, for example, tv shows (let alone books). I can think of Arthas from warcraft 3 and Sarah Kerrigan from starcraft (is no surprise they both were made by blizzard).
These character pieces of yours just keep coming out more awesome looking every time. I really like the style you've chosen for them, detailed yet clean shading.
