wow @ADrawingMan this is one of my fav things you've done. i absolutely LOVE the expression on his boney face. fantastic!
Alright dude, I redid it. I'm sorry but I can't bring myself to finish the left hand -I'm just getting way to bored noodling on the same thing for too long -though it obviously does look way better than the original. I won't be resubmitting the whole thing because of that though, just re-edited the same piece : )
Thanks a ton for your c&c, even though there's still probably a lot that you could point out that I should fix, even non-anatomy related things like the pixelplacement on the ribs or the over AA on some parts which I'm not happy with.
I'll take what I learned here and put it to use for my next anatomy piece!
Hey man, here's what I got so far. I honestly should have more since it's already been around 3 days or so, but I'm caught up in other stuff. I'm still keeping at it though.
I'm pretty satisified with the skull, especially when I compare it to the older version (still a few things I'll touch up), and looking back I should've probably realized how bad the older version looked. But yea, I still realize it's not close to being perfect, just a whole lot better than the old version.
The thing that's troubling me the most is the hands, especially the hand that is holding the skull- so I'm still working on figuring out how it should look. I think I may have also made the cloth too smooth looking. I'm also still trying to wrap my head around how to show the hole that is by the jaw and cheek bone (not sure what the appropiate word for that is).
I still prefer the messy feel that your wip gives off, not sure how to replicate that on a pixel level.
Totaly agreed with Cyangmou !
The anatomy is ruining a nice piece with a great impact.
just played a bit around with it
Yea, skulls are a lot of fun! Though, I honestly think this is the first time I'm actually thinking about a skull in terms of actually anatomy -as oppose to a rough skull shape with holes in it, never quite realised how precise a lot of the elements in a skull are :O
And yes please, I would totally welcome an edit of any kind!
anatomy is a vast topic, there are so many proportions, bones, muscles and fat storages you need to learn, that it will take you longer than a few years to really master it.
On the other hand it really helps with drawing all kind of animals, inventing creatures and of course portraiture too. And also with animating solid objects, because it really sharpens your understanding of perspective, construction and deep space.
I have been really scared to draw faces for a long time. But drawing faces starts with studying the skull and then with studying the muscles of the face. And since that has been quite a long time one of my biggest issues if it comes to drawing, I tried to overcome it over the last 2 years. While I am more comfortable now with that now, it doesn't change anything about the fact that you still have to be careful.
I can't say exactly how many skulls I have sketched down, surely multiple thousands over the last year.
And for me there is still quite a gap with all the tiny details if I sketch it out of mind, or draw it after reference =)
If you allow, I could try to make an edit for the skull, directly with pixel art - in that case I also would set up a reference.
Old version for comparison http://i.imgur.com/wo82WV7.png While I find that the cheekbone is more similar to your sketch, I feel like it just looks weird when compared to the older version now. Could just be that I'm doing it wrong though.
Anatomy is annoying
maybe this helps you to see the difference with the skull
Hey man, I tried to address the things you mentioned primarily around the ribcage and pelvis. I'm having trouble understanding what exactly is wrong with the skull though.
I understand that touching down on the cloth and skull more could greatly improve the piece as a whole -as would putting more time into the overall pixelwork on the ribs but I want to keep up with these daily challenges and hope to improve as I go (and please don't think your c&c has been wasted!)
Todays challenge also deals with anatomy (it's "Goblin") so I'll try to apply these things, along with more references to it.
I also changed the hand, and did some minor edits on the skull, but only in terms of shading in order to bring out the cheek bone some more.
regarding the interaction:
If you look at the cloak it's floating around the skeleton, could be magical but doesn't look 100% convincing to to me.
consider the underlying forms of the bones (since it's a skeleton)
consider at which points the cloth touches the bones of the skeleton (humerus, collarbones, shoulder blades, radius, ulna and consider where it's floating - it the cloak floats)
consider where the cloth compresses and where it stretches
consider how the lines of the drapery have to run around
--
anatomy issues are visible in the overall skull, especially since it misses cheekbones and the connection of forehead and nasal bone is really off
lumbar section of the spine is considerably thinner than the cervical section (which seems ok)
humans have 12 ribs
thoracic arch of the ribcage is completely missing
connection of lumbar section of the spine and pelvis is off
left hand is by far to small, while it's close to the viewer, it should be significantly bigger than the eyesockets of the skull.
also enorm problems with radius/ulna which weren#t even considered.
Hey Cyangmou, knowing how much you've dealt with anatomy in a lot of your pieces I appreciate the c&c! Would you mind elaborating on what you mean by how the antaomy and drapery are interacting with each other? Is it perhaps that there is not enough weight to the clothing -should it 'cling' to the bones more?
colors are nice, impression is striking.
the actual form drawing how anatomy and drapery should work would have masive room for improvement if you compare it to the stuff you solved so nicely.
All in all the piece is ok.
Yea, you're definitely right about that! Just edited it, take a look!
@Mandrill & Philippe
Yea, I'm pretty happy with how the cloth turned out too, especially the left sleeve! Thanks you two : )

Thanks man!

Still using the dog pic for my DA avatar : )
ADrawingMan your power level are increasing like crazy fast.. Its going to be over 9000 soon.
A big fan of this piece since I've seen it on twitter. That 'dissolving-cloth effect' is amazing, it looks so smooth.
I love the ethereal look.
is his left hand a little bit too tiny ?
Dog profile pic is gone :(
Seems this piece got a lot of fixes, but now looks great!
