Actually, I just wanted to be random in my letter picking, so I did /b/.

Lol yea, I was thinking of doing an X cuz it looks cool but I ended up doing the first letter of my name.

I think that everybody is doing the initial of their name. At least i'm doing it!

Notice that nobody's doing vowels...

Thanks Cure, ska. Submitted anyway :P

Nice and simple challenge, might really enter this time :3

@Jeremy via Cure - Pretty much what he said. Just as long as the letter is the central focus (no hidden letters tucked in the corner of an 80x80 canvas) and is discernible which letter you've chosen.

@Jeremy: I thought an initial and an illuminated letter (aka historiated initial, according to wiki) were the same thing, but I can't claim to really know anything on the topic

I would imagine (due to the link in the description showing rather fanciful letters) that you can do a fair bit of decoration, so long as the letter is the central focus and it's not like a scene with a letter hidden in it or something equally ridiculous. But this isn't my challenge, so we'll have to hear from ska for the final word on this matter.

@Peeter: Not unless it's made 100% from scratch. Edits of existing work aren't accepted.

What a wonderful challenge!

I've started one inspired by Mucha, now sure how it'll turn out haha.

Does redoing my old work count as new one?

user
TheManuz (Level 5 Killer Klown) @ 1/4/2010 12:52

@Skamocore: no problem, i guess i can usa a solid bg. I will post something soon in the challenge thread.

How much decoration is allowed? 'Cos Illuminated Letters have all sorts of extra arty stuff around :P

Chance of a rule change is very unlikely; why not post what you've got so far in the challenge thread?

user
TheManuz (Level 5 Killer Klown) @ 1/4/2010 10:20

Mhhh... i was thinking... why no transparency? I think that some initials may need it.

I will work with transparency, hoping for a change in rules!

If the rules will not change, i'll force a solid background at the last minute!

The challenge seems interesting and not too much time consuming (which is the reason i do really few challenges!)

@khorin: Thanks for the link!

For inspiration, check out the Daily Drop Cap. From the site:

The Daily Drop Cap is an ongoing project by typographer and illustrator Jessica Hische. Each day (or at least each WORK day), a new hand-crafted decorative initial cap will be posted for your enjoyment and for the beautification of blog posts everywhere.
