We examined the resources of the Amiga Cinemaware game (It Came from the Desert) and the compression methods in this are WILD. It took years until two guys successfully managed to crack it, I doubt even an intelligence agency would be able to decrypt it.

As for tips - there aren't any really, everyone's doing it their own way. Altho i would say that 8x8 grid overlay really helps with overcoming infamous speccy's attribute limitations and overall composition. Paint Shop Pro supports it, i'm using an orange-colored grid so that it wouldn't blend with any speccy colors.
