I'll just change it.  I got it to 21 colors with almost no change in quality.  Sorry for the mistake.

Okay, well I made up a new background to try and change it up, which I'll post.  I don't know what it is with my brightness settings, but I can't really figure out how to change it...  I'll put up my new background in a moment in a new screenshot if you'd like to see it.

Alright, I'll put it in the information.  I'm putting a lot of this stuff on here in the hopes of feedback for improvement, and those parts aren't a part of it, they're just kinda there.  It's really the pixel art that I want people to see and that I want them to tell me what should be improved and such.

@Wolverine: Ah, you're right.  Okay, so should I take it off, seen as it isn't pixel art?  Kind of defeats the purpose of the site, although most of it is pixel art.

About your backdrop in comparison to this one, it is very similar, and I'm going to attempt to change it.  One problem with a lot of the things I do is that I'm not very imaginative, and thus when I see something I like, I try to make it my own, but often do not change it enough.  Sorry about that, I'll try to come up with something on my own.

I changed up to a screenshot of a different room.  This update has a little creature that bounces around and lava with a glow effect.  The biggest change, however, is the addition of slopes.  The player can move up and down them, and I had to put in a change to the tileset to make them look nice and fit in.  Reactions?

@yrizoud: by "walkable void" tile, do you mean the background tile or the solid black part outside the are you can walk?

@Khoryl: I actually have lava geysers in a different game of mine that's near completion: http://gmb-time.blogspot.com/2010/03/quietus-alpha-ix-level-select-and.html

@Badassbill: thanks!  I spent two hours or so doing them.

@antymattar: sure, I'd be happy to have ideas!  So far I'm thinking that I'll go with a cave-style adventure game where you try and escape the caves.  It won't be a huge enemy game, but more of a traversing terrain game (but it will have enemies, of course!)

Thanks everyone!

Alright, I desaturated the character a bit to try and bring him out of the background, as Randommonkies said, and I think it's worked pretty well.  I'm about to update the image with these small change in a minute.

I lightened up the mushroom to try and make it a bit more visible.  I'm hoping it will work out without having to alter the color scheme.

@r1k: I'm glad you liked it!  I posted up the tileset a couple of days ago, and I really like it.  It was my first try using this kind of style, and I'm really happy with how it came out.

@Khoryl: I fixed that little pixel in the tileset; thanks for pointing it out!

@DJD: Thanks!  I was really going for that style, and I'm glad it's come across :D

@Badassbill: I'm going to be putting these into a game soon, and I'm thinking I'll carry the style.  I'm going to make more graphics for the game, and then finally program it and put them all in (my real skill is programming, graphics just came along from practicing in a basic sprite editor).  I'll post up a mock-up for the game once the graphics are all done, and then use that as the inspiration for how the game will look once complete :)

Thanks :)

What do you mean about the legs, just skinnier or something?

Alright, I made it more contrasting with the background (darker volcano), I added a little dust spray around the top of the volcano, and made the lava much redder.  Any more suggestions?
