As someone who has completed a full platform game in Pico 8 (Alex Kidd!) https://www.lexaloffle.com/bbs/?pid=46037&tid=30218 I can assure you - there is no way Golden Axe could be constructed in Pico 8 at this level of detail, there just is no graphical tile space for it, no matter how creative you get, let alone the levels.

Now, a super low res demake with each character at 8x8, might be feasible.

But this version of Golden Axe as you've presented it would easily be possible in www.love2d.org, which has no such restrictions and very similar presentation to Pico 8 with it's retro 2D focus, and ability to easily do low res games filled to any screen size, and use MOD files for its music.

I think it's cool to take Pico 8's resolution and colour pallete and make games like that in other systems like Love2D, it's a very cute restriction.

Moohahahahahaa....
For some reason it reminds me of the spooky level on Banjo-Kazooie.

I think the thing about the fence is that it uses a variety of shading.  Genrally, the wires going one way are bright, and the ones going the other way are dark (cause of the angle they're facing the light),  But also this shading is varied along the wire as well, to show the fence isn't perfect.

To the comment Sonic made about the "tummy rolls", heh - all I can say is - all REAL human(oid) beings get some creasing there in that kind of pose, especially females because they generally have a bit of tummy fat there, and I'm talking about the average, ideal figure - it's meant to be there.  Even on that faerie's slim build.
Something anyone can pick up just by being observant around real human beings and not urealistically sand-blasted smooth android looking pinups.
I didn't find it distracting - indeed I didn't even notice it untill he pointed it out.  Because it looks quite normal to me.
I think this is one of the lovely details you will see in artwork done by an "actual" female :) rather than some guy's fantasy.

I might agree that the breasts are levitating a bit much for their size, but I'm thinking that it would be hard to draw them down a bit at this resolution without it looking funny, I don't know.

It doesn't matter if it really was done by hand 100% - as far as I can see (afer zooming in) this could easily have been created by painting it and then sampling it down, or just using photoshop style brushes at this resolution.  And then dropping the colour range to get the dithering in photoshop.

Personally, I consider "real" pixel art to be something that is too sharp and refined to have been done using what I described above.  I mean, otherwise there's no point.

What's the point in replicating what PS will do for you already?  In my mind, Pixel art is what you can do by manually placing pixels to get the look you can't already get with photoshop.  And if you want to do dithering or anti-aliasing, if you're doing it by hand then you can make it very controlled and fine - dither in the appropriate direction of the shape of the object, only antialias exactly where its needed, etc.

I just don't see that in this pic.  Like I said, if it really was done pixel by pixel, it was waste of time.

(Yeah I'm new and haven't uploaded anything yet... it's coming.)
