I know a few really talented pianists with MIDI controllers, I'm sure I could get one them to record a harpsichord concerto by some Baroque composer. Bach or something.

@AtomicMushroom that is amazing!

Thanks everybody : )

Here are some more new things that will feature the upcoming update and are fully working in my unreleased version.

- New start screen.

- Clouds on the outside. From time to time there are travelling clouds.

- David hides and says "Psst..." and "Signore!" from time to time. When you talk with him, he unhides. When you stop talking, he hides again.

- Michaelangelo's house.

- This is an idea I did today for the map (is still not programmed). What do you think about it? I thought that you would press "m" and this shows up. Similar map for the forest, dungeons, etc..

Another option would be having a translucent minimap over the main screen, showing it when pressing "m".

The most terrible thing is that she's aware of everything, her mind is the same as 2-3 years ago. What shocked me most was that she was only able to communicate drawing characters with the only finger she can move, letter by letter, she told us to "APROVECHAR" (it means something like "enjoy" but, it means more to get everything you can get from (life) ).

I want to answer a few more posts but I can't right now, I'll do it.

That's totally awesome. It's very progressive, it remains me the record of Michael Pinnella from Symphony X, "enter by the twelfth gate".

The only problem is that is copyrighted material : / So I think we can't use it without their permission.

The cool thing about classical composers, is that they're dead so many years ago that no copyright is needed.

That would be very cool, and of great help : )

I'm sad to say that the sister of my mother has passed away yesterday. She is now free from the prison of her body. We love you aunt.

Of course, if you had the artist's permission it would be cool. He probably wouldn't mind at all and definitely wouldn't want to charge royalties or something silly like that, since all his music is just available for free download from bandcamp. In fact, he probably would be quite happy to see his work in any sort of video game or pixel artwork animation or whatever it is people do on this website. It is almost as if you would be helping the guy out, in a way, since he has probably been making this music for years with very little interest. However, his music might not really fit the theme, and that is a perfectly acceptable reason not to consider it.

No, you know what, I can do better than that. I have read this whole thread and understand what this is a lot better now. You guys have put a lot of work into this.

I can make you a small collection of electronic pseudo-classical baroque music just for this game. I can make a short little classical harpsichordy bit for that Josquin Desprez guy with the broken keyboard.

Let me know. I would enjoy the challenge.

Thank you.

I'm done with update 11. I only have to take the pics, and double check the things featured in the update, to assure that there are no bugs. I will post UPDATE 11 in the following days.

I'm sorry that this update took so many time (2 months) instead of the usual month (or the 2 weeks of the old days..) but it was very hard to program this time, and real life (and death) happened, in this 2 months.

Also, I have an important exam in my workplace in june, that determines in which town (and high school) they send me to work as a teacher, so maybe I will not work 100% on Medici until june, but of course I will dedicate some of my (tiny) free time, because Medici it's fun! Of course, after june, I will have plenty of time, because I have holidays all the summer

Today I ended the sister's quest and 3rd floor of Medici Castle completely. Jal, I used switches instead of pushing blocks, it was easier to program for me, the pushing blocks are working 100% perfectly on the botanical scroll quest, you'll see.

For me it's better that the areas of pushing blocks are "enclosed", as in the botanical scroll quest.

For my part, there's no problem, as long as is understood that the songs (or some of them) could be used, or not, depending mainly if they're are cool enough, fit enough, me and jal like them, etc...

I would love to hear pieces in that style of electronic pseudo-classical baroque music : ) Also the broken keyboard sound seems very interesting!

Lovely house! Maybe I'm just slow, but I didn't immediately recognise the light from the windows for what it is. Maybe the contrast is too high? The patches of light look like objects, instead of bright areas.

Also, I think it's kind of weird that one carpet appears completely round, when the perspective has a slight angle. I guess that's the style of drawing though.

Well, finally I posted the update 11, it's in my site, as usual:

www.jaumealcazo.com

I must say that the sailor that carries cargo still doesn't block Leo, neither does the girl at the annuncion painting or the captain, I leave this for the moment.

The new features are as follows:

Update 11:

1 - Botanical scroll Quest *********************************************

- Go to the forest. You see the Salvia. Talk to the ladies and the puzzle (sokoban) opens.

- This is the initial position of the puzzle. Push and pull the blocks (cursors+"a" key) and put every block on the green squares. Then the sokoban exit gate opens.

- Get the salvia.

- Talk again with the ladies. They give you the botanical scroll in exchange for the salvia.

- Notice that Leo gets red and starts to sweat when trying to push when it's impossible.

- The kids walk around and you can talk with them (temporary portrait). Thanks Chris for the correction "don't/can't" : ) As jal said, this will make a painting in the future (maybe next update).

- If you try to talk again...

2 -Sisters Quest ***************************************************

- Go to Medici Palace, floor2.

- Push the switches in this order: Lucrezia, Maddalena, Luisa and Contessina.

- Get the key.

- Open the door.

- You can talk with Lorenzo. There are also additional patrolling guards.

- More patrolling guards.

- If you try to pull the switch when the puzzle is solved, or pull the wrong switch (when the puzzle is running) you get some messages of error.

- Some clues scattered around (order the sisters by age). Maybe the clues are not clear enough for the player I think, jal, what do you think about it?

- New patrolling guard at floor1

3 - Cardina'ls Quest *********************************************************

- You can begin the Cardinal Quest by talking with the cardinal. Then the quest appears in the Collection ("c" key).

- After accepting the Cardinal's Quest, you can sketch the Sailor's painting at the docks.

- Annunciation painting.

- Annunciation sketched, browsing the paintings:

- Guy painting.

Element's Gate *******************************************************

4 - The gate of the elements:

Other ****************************************************************

5 - Michael Angelo's House.

6 - Clouds pass from time to time.

7 - Obtaining the Scribe's Scroll:

8 - New phrases for (not all pictured)
    - People that look at the musicians.
    - Knife throwwer.
    - Musicians.
    - Trumpet player.
    - Rolling vitruvian guy.
    - Girl that sells stuff.

9 - Black lines between chunks removed.

10 - Colored text for clues.

11 - New frames and location for david in the forest:

12 - New init screen.

Bugs solved ******************************************************

- Fixed the bug in which AtomicMushroom got trapped in the beginning (review old posts).

- The annunciation painting servant had incorrect position at other resolutions. Solved.

- Guard at the beginning that was saying "undefined" (now says "i'm bored")

- New phrases at the shops when when trying to do certain things:

     - "You don't have enough stock to sell."
     - "You have not enough money."
     - "I have not enough stock."

- Fixed some collision problems.

Suggestions ******************************************************

- Sounds of birds singing, for the forest, for more pleasant gameplay. Sound of water current near sea? (birds, clouds, water current=relaxing..)

- I suggest Michaelangelo is sleeping in his bed until David arrives. I suggest you can bother him to awake him and get him mad : P

- People in the Cathedral benchs, praying.

I'm in love with this project, definitely using it as a reference for some of my own graphics. And yeah def play up the rivalry between leo and Michelangelo.

About the latest map, I think the ceiling decoration on the top left is a little too elaborate, and it obstructs the windows where you can see outside.

Also, maybe add a dissection table with a corpse still on it somewhere. Maybe there could even be a dissection mini game as an anatomy study. Could be something like the Operation board game in terms of gameplay.

Edit: After playing through the latest version, 2 things I noticed that stick out to me. 1, leo's walk cycle looks off because there's no 1 pixel bounce, and on the side left/right, he shifts to the right/left 1 pixel.

The other thing was, the girl says the street performers are vitruvian men. This doesn't make sense because vitruvius was one man, not a place.. Leonardo drew an illustration of one of his concepts, drawing a man in a circle that also creates a square, which showed the "ideal proportions" of the time, so the vitruvian man drawing isn't vitruvius himself either.

The second bed is for Francesco Melzi (some dude portrait/sprite). Turns out DaVinci had him as assistant for over 30 years and never separated. Melzi family still owns the DaVinci estate. Some think they were romantic too.
This character will help Leo and may possibly do some of the work, like fighting, in the dungeon section. Or whenever Leo needs some kind of assistance.

I was using tiles from other areas but you are right so I'm recoloring this, thx :)

As mentioned before scale and perspective is all over the place and is almost impossible to control. I don't mind the rug shapes so I'm leaving these as is but see your point.

True, I'll remove, make another or just use the shadows on the floor with no ceiling like I've done with other busy roofs. I like this project having lots of things over everything and sometimes get carried away.

I have been debating where to place anatomy related stuff and for now think its best not to have it inside Leo's house. Maybe in the dungeons, catacombs is better. The patio in Leo's house with the busy roof is actually there just in case I do place a dissection area inside the house. The operation style mini-game is great and is totally the solution I was looking for, thanks :)

*The whole Vetruvian area is a WIP. I actually just think it would be funny for Leo to get an idea from the guy on the wheel. The title screen is the Vetruvian Man so he can't really be in the game.

Removed the ceiling beams and instead went with just the floor shadows. The patio or even the doors in workshop can always be a dissection area later on. Some frames shown here too for desks, doors, fireplace and the paintings.

Looks good!

Why 4 frames for the door, when all the other houses doors are 2 frames? The pattern for the shadows of the ceiling it's a bit weird for me, but far better readable than the other ceiling.

When you are done, please send the .psd, I'll try to do this for the next update. As now I've the house, I can begin to program the inventions too.

An idea: When Leo approaches his invention table, a "action" in the hud, reads "invent A", and then if you press A, it brings the screen of the inventions.

But don't we need a general screen for scrolling the available (started) inventions? Mmm... Or the inventions are the scroll that Lorenzo gives Leo each time? Mmm..I'm not sure on how to handle this.

We need feedback about this, I think.

* EDIT: Oh, now I remember we talked this long ago, and you finally told me for Leo to invent in his house, but using inventions anywhere. Mmm... But what about of a central screen to scroll all the inventions when the invention table screen pops out?

Maybe this screen is actually the table of Leo, seen from above, with all kind of things you already drawed over it, skulls, candles, etc.. but with a central space in the middle, and that central space are the scrolls of the inventions.

Then the player could scroll around the table and when presses "A" that invention in particular shows up.

For obtaining a "scroll" for the invention, the player first must encounter the problem. For example, when he sees the rocks in the forest, the action hud changes to "draw", then he draws an idea of the rock driller. Mmm...

Is not needed to talk with Lorenzo for every invention? Mmm.. Maybe you could present to Lorenzo the finished invention for more cash.

Only talking aloud.. Only ideas. But, people, what do you think about that ? Could you give us some feedback?

Dissection idea it's very cool!

Just another minor detail. The shadow from the chandeliers shouldn't be like that. Right now, you can see the shadows of the candles themselves (and maybe even the flames? Anyway, since the light source is the flame directly above the candle, the candles shouldn't cast a shadow on the floor beneath the chandelier.

Unless that was just artistic license :)

I'll give those songs a look when I'm back at my house, this counter point stuff is really killing me! haha, if you make it sound literally just like classical music it doesn't feel gamey, and too much game and it just sounds like the classical genre!

Hey, the spare room looks better, though with some insane vaulting. I think back then they mainly used groin/tunnel vaults, but hey it doesn't have to be THAT accurate.

Anyways, the biggest problem with this, is that the game is gorgeous from a graphical perspective, but it has a lot of issues from a game design perspective. Now I know what you guys have so far is very early beta design. But still, it's worth mentioning that there's  no primary focus. Drawing from as much as zelda as you have, zelda is still primarily linear, with small rewarded sidequests. Here you have a bunch of sidequests, but no real story or focused gameplay. I understand that those elements are in development, but you may want to think about that before you go overboard  drawing graphics, because those elements could change what you have to depict.

In terms of the music, classical can fit in games, it really just depends on how it conveys the atmosphere. You have to remember also, that this is a representation of florence that is somewhat cartoony, a kind of skewed whacky way of seeing things that could be leonardo's own perception. The music should convey that. Also, referencing zelda once again, you can get some ideas between the music and environment relationship (since the graphics are done in a minish cap-esque style) I would say, stay away from midis, you can still get that oldschool vibe off mp3s, and besides, this is more gba style gen, than snes anyway.

Leo house is totally programmed now : ) hehe this one has been very fast! (still not uploaded, of course..)

The normal floor of the Last Supper is done (only lacks "over everything" layer and the npc). Jal I've sent you a message. Can I program the basement of the last supper (the pushing blocks) or better wait ? (you told me to wait about the Last Supper some time ago).

King of Games, I understand what you say. But don't worry, this is as the TV-Show "LOST", at the end all the quests, puzzles, etc.. will make sense xD (or so I hope :P )

MUSICIANS OUT THERE:

I post some more musical suggestions (for inspiration) from my ALL-TIME favorite RPG: Lands of Lore I (Throne of Chaos) (I *truly* encourage you with all my forces to play this game, if you haven't played it, PLEASE PLAY THAT GAME!! It's the best RPG EVER, believe me, I've played A LOT of RPGS..)

Correct you are but with shadows its not always easy to get a Renaissance-ish feel so I'm taking liberties with these ceilings. I have simplified it for Leo's house tho ;)

A lot is in the brain and not written but I'm creating art not entirely blind. Just the same I finally sat down and put together the first written draft for the gameplay below. A lot of errors and loopholes are present here but will be smoothed out. All c+c is welcome.

FIRST DRAFT STORYLINE/WALKTHROUGH/MORE
>>WARNING TYPO MADNESS AHEAD<<<

Medici: The daVinci Journals - Version 1.0, 05-05-2011

001   Story Overview
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Italy during the Renaissance…
After a long and peaceful reign by the Medici Family in Florence, the de'Pazzi family began to rival the power and prestige of the Medicis in Florence. The leader of the de'Pazzi famibly was the evil Andrea de' Pazzi. Lorenzo deMedici started to lose power and Florence was thrown into turmoil. Lorenzo started losing the loyalty of the people of Florence and the end of the Medici surely loomed in the horizon.
Years ago when Leonardo was lived in Florence, Leonardo helped Lorenzo in many, many ways. Lorenzo knew he must bring Leonardo back to Florence if the fog of war and despair were to end for the people of Florence, the Medici and especially Lorenzo.
In Venice, Leonardo received Lorenzo's scroll with the urgent request for his immediate return to Florence. Lorenzo had been a great patron and even friend of Leonardo and he found no option but to set sail for Florence to help Lorenzo in any way he could.
A friend in need is a friend indeed. Leonardo had no choice.
002   Walkthrough
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Prologue - The Ship
At game start while intro images scroll showing the ship, ocean, Italy, etc. The setting is staged and Francesco Melzi is introduced as Leo's assistant and companion. After intro the scene, inside the ship and the Captain of the ship will explain the gameplay to Leo and have some minor conversation. Before landing the captain will give Leo the Map of Florence (map part 1) (controls M).
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Beginning - The Dock
Once landed Francesco will be by their luggage. First task is for Leo to find his house provided by Lorenzo. Leo's house is highlighted on the Map after speaking with Francesco who gives Leo the house key. Leo first has to find the house and enter, Francesco and their luggage stay in the dock. In the dock's top right area is a monk character, Fra Angelico, who tells Leo how inspirational Florence is and how he was inspired by this area to create 'St. Nicholas Calms a Tempest at Sea and The Miracle of the Grain. He offers to show Leo the painting (painting popup). This shows Leo how to draw once Leo gets the Cardinal Quest in the Cathedral later in the game.
Fra Angelico gives Leo the Painting badge which allows Leo to draw. The cardinal quest cannot begin until this badge is obtained.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Leo's House
After Leo finds his house and enters Francesco and the luggage are inside the house. Francesco reminds and suggests to Leo that he should visit Lorenzo right away. This highlights Medici's castle in the map. Francesco tells Leo to look at the map. The 2 paintings in the art studio are blank.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Florence
The city is a bit bleak and empty. The people of Florence are scared. The market is open and one or 2 NPCs are around but Florence is mostly empty. The Bell tower, Library, MichaelAngelo's and Mona's house are closed. The BG music is a bit gloomy and bleak until Leo completes the Josquin harpsichord quest later on.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Medici Castle
The castle can't be entered until Leo finds his house.
First Floor -
Upon entering the frost floor of the castle Leo first meets the good and bad guards. The bad guard is a spy for the de'Pazzi and will always steer Leo in the wrong direction, with lies, bribes and cheats. The good guard is a loyal Lorenzo knight and will always help, be honest and suggest the right things to Leo. After showing the good guard Lorenzo's scroll Leo can enter the 2nd floor.
Second Floor-
nothing happens here at first.
Third Floor-
The door to the 4th floor is locked and Leo must get the key by solving the daughter's puzzle. Leo must pull the switched in the order of the daughter's birth by getting clues from the conversations with the sister's and from other clues on the second floor paintings. Once solved the key appears and Leo can go to the 4th floor.
Fourth Floor-
Medici's throne room. Lorenzo welcomes Leo and explains the situation with the de'Pazzi and Andrea de' Pazzi. Here Lorenzo will explain that something must be done quickly to help him and the people of Florence. Lorenzo has no idea what to do and sends Leo to come up with a solution. Lorenzo will tell Leo that currently he and Andrea are almost even in strength and introduces the HP meter of Medici vs. de'Pazzi which is 50% each (this is menu item H [health]). To win the game Leo needs Medici to be 100% and de'Pazzi 0% in the HP meters. Leo has no clue where to go. The bad guard tells Leo that they are doomed and might as well go to the Palazzo Pazzi and just join Andrea and the de'Pazzi family half joking but not really. The good guard doesn't know what to do but suggests that maybe Leo should talk to the weird gypsy fortune teller.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Gypsy Camp
The fortune teller tent is closed until Leo meets Lorenzo and then talks to the good guard. Once Leo finds the gypsy camp and can enter the fortune teller tent she will see his future and roughly mention the games overview and what Leo needs to help Lorenzo. Leo must conquer fire, earth, air, water and the ether. Only with these powers will Leo ever succeed in helping Lorenzo. The gypsy will tell Leo that in order to conquer fire he must enter the Lava cavern in the forest and get the fire emblem. She tells him to return once he has the fire emblem.
In this area is an NPC that will give Leo the gypsy camp map (map part 2). This opens the Michaelangelo side quest. This NPC will later have the card betting mini-game (a real game from the renaissance). The mini game doesn't open until Leo meets David in the forest.
The fortune teller can now give Leo clues for David.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Lava Cavern
The lava cavern is located in the southern part of the forest. This is the first dungeon and is small and easy. Getting to it is not. Leo must find the man sitting by the rock wall and discover he needs to invent something to break through. This will introduce Leo to inventions and the invention screens. Once Leo breaks the 2 rock walls he will be able to reach the lava cavern. In the forest Leo will get the forest map after breaking through the rocks from one of the soldiers near the lava cavern (map part 3). Once Leo gets the fire emblem and exits the cavern, Francesco is there and Leo tells him all about it and Francesco tells Leo to go see the Gypsy again.
This area is naturally very fiery, hot and lava filled. Easy but lots of danger.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Gypsy Camp
The gypsy tells Leo he did great and is then told the 2nd emblem is the Earth emblem and this is in the catacombs at the end of the forest. She tells Leo he should visit Lorenzo.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Medici Castle
Leo talks to Lorenzo and tells him he knows what he needs to do to help him. Lorenzo asks Leo how he got past the rock walls and Leo mentions the rock blaster invention. Lorenzo awards Leo with money/prize for the invention and tells him that he'll reward him for his inventions and to come whenever he has new inventions.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Catacombs
Leo finds the entrance to the catacombs locked and has to find the key, which he gets after solving the sokoban puzzle by the catacomb entrance. For the puzzle to open Leo will need to find the 2nd army camp and help the 2 soldiers by the water (the good and bad guard) with the scuba diving invention. Leo gets the catacombs key from the whichever guard he gives the scuba suit to. They both want it.
If he gives it to the good guard then Leo gets the prize from Lorenzo later on when he again visits Lorenzo and the Medici HP meter goes up.
If he gives it to the bad guard then Leo gets no prize from Lorenzo and the Medici HP meter goes down.
After solving the puzzle and getting the key Leo will enter the catacombs and find his way to the Earth Emblem.
In the catacombs is one area Leo cannot get to yet…very mysterious.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Gypsy Camp
The gypsy tells Leo he did great and is then told the 3rd emblem is the Air emblem and this is in the Bell tower in the city. She tells Leo he should visit Lorenzo. The Bell Tower is closed until Leo gets the Earth Emblem.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Medici Castle
Leo talks to Lorenzo and tells him he is making progress. Leo shows the diving invention. Lorenzo awards Leo with money/prize for the invention. Lorenzo wonders if Leo can help his General in the 1st army camp.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Bell Tower
Leo can enter the Bell tower now but can't get very far. The soldiers won't let him pass without the war badge because the Bell tower has been converted into a lookout post and garrison for the army. Leo needs the war badge.
~~~~~~~~~
Army Camp 1
The way into the 2nd army camp is blocked and Leo can't walk into camp. Some nearby NPC will tell Leo some nonsense about birds and gives Leo the clue to fly into the 2nd army camp. This is the glider invention. Once in the 1st army camp the general explains how he is overwhelmed by the de'pazzi forces. Leo must now create the tank invention to give to the general. Once Leo gives him the tank the general gives Leo the war badge and the Medici HP meter goes up.
~~~~~~~~~~~
Medici Castle
Leo talks to Lorenzo and tells him he is making progress. Leo shows the tank invention. Lorenzo awards Leo with money/prize for the invention. Lorenzo is very impressed with Leo's progress and tells Leo that he should visit the Santa Croce - Cathedral of Florence sometime and ask the Cardinal for his blessings…it can't hurt.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Bell Tower
With the war badge Leo can now go for the Earth Emblem. The bell tower is a huge maze that Leo needs to get through to get to the top of the tower where the bell is. The bell tower has some music(bell) puzzles, sneaking by guard areas, and will feature some Earthy based stuff :/
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Santa Croce - Cathedral of Florence
On his way to talk to Lorenzo and the gypsy Leo can now enter the Cathedral.

Inside the church one monk/scribe is locked in a room and wants Leo to help him out. Saving this monk gives Leo the scribe's scroll and opens the Library.

Leo can meet the Cardinal once he saves the monk. The cardinal is very afraid that he will no longer be the cardinal if the de'pazzi take over since it was Lorenzo that made him the Cardinal of Florence. He wants to be safe with whatever happens so he wants to be ready for whatever happens. He needs a gift that will work on whomever wins power over Florence…this is one sneaky cardinal. The Cardinal thinks a painting is perfect for this. The cardinal tells Leo to bring him ideas for his final approval. This opens the Cardinal side quest and if Leo got the painting badge from Fra Angelico in the dock he can begin with painting ideas. The art Journal in the collection screen.

Throughout the game are Leo's known 15 paintings created by NPCs and when talking to these NPCs he asks if he can sketch them. All are easy enough except for Mona and the crippled guy with the Lion. Mona is a whole side-quest on its own and opens the painting frames in Leo's house. The crippled guy is everywhere Leo goes and never lets Leo sketch him, because he is never by a lion like in the painting. Only at the end of the game when Andrea de'Pazzi has jailed him in the Palazzo Pazzi and is in a dungeon about to be eaten by a lion that Leo can sketch him and save him. Leo gets a very important item piece from the cripple. The gift painting is the Mona Lisa.

Completing the cardinal quest gets Leo a very special prize. Once all the 15 paintings are in Leo's collection screen these sketches become full color paintings and maybe even have descriptions of them (its educational).
~~~~~~~~~~~
Medici Castle
Leo talks to Lorenzo and tells him he is making more progress. Leo shows new inventions. Lorenzo awards Leo with money/prize for these inventions, if any new ones exist. Leo gets prizes for inventions that help Lorenzo only. Inventions that are useless to Lorenzo make him angry. The scooter, for example, helps Leo but not Lorenzo. Lorenzo now tells Leo that the people are very restless and afraid and he can't get Josquin to come up with a piece of music that will lift people's hope and spirits. This open the Josquin side quest in the Castle's 2nd floor. Leo must help Josquin by improving his harpsichord. After creating the improved harpsichord this is a mini musical game with a good prize. The Florence BG music score changes to a more upbeat tune when this happens. This makes the Medici HP meter go up.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Gypsy Camp
The gypsy now tells Leo he did great and is then told the 4th emblem is the water emblem and this is in the Imola maze. She warns Leo of the dangers ahead.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Forest David
The gate to the imola maze is locked. Leo will need to get the key from David who is in the forest. Leo discovers that David's clothes have been stolen (the gate key are is his pant pocket) and David wants Leo to get them back for him. Leo can now play the card mini game in the gypsy camp and beat the gypsy to get the clothes.
After getting David's clothes this mini game is always there for prizes for the rest of the game. This mini game however never favors Leo…firkin gypsies >:(
Once Leo returns the clothes to David he gets the key from David. It turns out that David is going to pose for the statue Michaelangelo is making for the cardinal to give to Lorenzo (or Andrea de'Pazzi, whomever wins power over Florence). That Cardinal is very sneaky. David was going to pose for Michaelangelo near the lake by Imola but some other painter was already there…painting for the cardinal's sneaky ways too.
After this happens MichaelAngelo's house in Florence will be open. David will be standing on the podium posing for the rest of the game. He finds himself being naked again and wants this all to end so he can go home. David doesn't let Leo bother Michalangelo by talking to him. David gives Leo items to get him to go away. This is where Leo can always go for free and easy items. The statue is never completed and David never leaves. Michaelangelo just sculpts away…Its a daVinci game not a Michaelangelo game, fool!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Medici Castle
If Leo visits Lorenzo he is told that de'pazzi's army has taken over Imola.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Imola gates and entrance
If Leo doesn't visit Lorenzo then when Leo enters the Imola gates Lorenzo is there freaking out about it. Leo must get the water emblem and drive the de'pazzi army away. If he does HP goes up if he fails HP goes down. All of the Imola maze is a huge puzzle. The HP meter becomes the countdown clock for any timed areas.
In this area is a tower Leo cannot enter (this is the end of the Imola puzzle and where the water emblem is housed). By the lake is Boticelli who is working on a painting for the cardinal. He needs a pearl for the shell and wants Leo to get one for him. Getting Boticelli the pearl gets him the Imola map (map part 4). Leo can enter the Imola maze but without the map nothing happens.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Imola
The Imola maze is a 3 part puzzle.
Ground level-
At the end of the maze is a locked gate that needs to be unlocked. Leo must first turn on the tower to all the tower light beams to unlock the gate. One tower is beam completely destroyed and Leo need to go underground to get this tower working.
Underground-
This level is all underwater and Leo must navigate this with dams, switches, water streams, etc. Getting to the end lights the last tower beam and Leo can then enter the fort.
The fort-
The fort is overtaken by de'pazzi armies and Leo will need the good and bad guards to help here. Good guard help gets HP up and drives away the de'Pazzi army. Bad guard help zaps HP. Leo should get this easy enough and just has to avoid the bad guard. This is when he begins to suspect that is is bad and decide if the rest of the game he will stay with Lorenzo or switch. He stays with Lorenzo.
the tower tops-
This last part of the Imola puzzle and requires Leo to use the glider to get to the last tower by gliding from tower to tower. Once inside the last tower he can open the door from inside and get the water emblem. HP goes up.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Gypsy Camp
The gypsy now tells Leo he did great and is then told the 5th emblem is the Ether emblem and this is inside the Palazzo Pazzi (Palazzo Pazzi-Quaratesi), the Last Major puzzle. She warns Leo of the dangers ahead and tells Leo that in order to get to the Palzzo he needs to forge a scroll to get through the de'Pazzi guards. This opens the Library scribe quest.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Medici Castle
Leo talks to Lorenzo and tells him he is making more progress and is almost done. Leo shows new inventions. Lorenzo awards Leo with money/prize for these inventions, if any new ones exist.
~~~~~~~~~~
The Library
Leo needs to navigate the library and get the forged scroll from the rogue scribe. First Leo must get to the basement of the library where he discovers a secret map (map part 5) the mysterious catacombs area. There is an underground passage to the Cathedral where Leo finds out that the Cardinal is conspiring with the bad guard. Turns out the locked door in Medici's castle where Leo first meets the bad guard leads to the room where the bad guard spies on Lorenzo with the Cardinal's help. Inside this Castle chamber is a side passage that leads to the mysterious catacombs area.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Catacombs Secret Area
Leo can now get to the area previously blocked in the catacombs. This is just a prize puzzle.
~~~~~~~~~~
The road to Palazzo Pazzi
Leo will navigate this NPC, animal and make area. Leo gets (map part 6) from girl with Ermine.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Palazzo Pazzi (Palazzo Pazzi-Quaratesi) 'Last Boss'
The last puzzle and the way to the Ether emblem. The good guard helps. The bad guard gives up and is defeated or maybe he converts to being good. Maybe he just fakes being good to be back in the sequel >.<
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Gypsy Camp
The gypsy now tells Leo he has all he needs. A big prize. Maybe Leo gets all the money get ever spent here which is just enough to buy that one item he could never afford before which is the last item for the Vincopter invention.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Medici Castle
Leo talks to Lorenzo and Florence is saved and back to normal. Lorenzo awards Leo with money/prize for these inventions, if any new ones exist. Lorenzo is very happy and wishes his brother was still alive to see this day. Medici wants to celebrate this occasion by building a statue of a horse in the town square.
~~~~~~~~~~~
Florence
The city is happy. There is a carnival, music, lots of NPCs all is great. Leo can now finally open the last gate and find the clearing for the Vincopter which he and Francesco use to fly away to the next city. GAME OVER.
Leo doesn't have to end here though he can finish up any side quest not yet completed. The horse statue, for example.
Jalonso, that is a truly impressive summation!
Excellent plans, excellent graphics, and tireless work from JaumeAlcazo -- success seems assured.
(I sure hope anticipation doesn't have any medical drawbacks, because mine for this project keeps going up with every post...)
The only scene missing from the orig mockup would be that map of italy, where florence is selected, but you could visit other areas via the flying machine. But I suppose you have to keep the somewhat short and local.
It does limit where the dungeons can be, and I would suggest not having 2 of them be in the forest to the right of the city. Having the crypt be there is fine, but a lava dungeon in the same area doesn't make sense to me. Also, how are the elements connected with Leo?
A possibility is this: In the interactive intro, Leo is in Venice and recieves a scroll to go to Florence. Then, after settling his affairs with the house,Melzi, and passage to the ship, he talks to ship Captain. Then the map shows up and Leo can only choose between Florence and Venice.
How about Leo is living by the channels in Venice, and some gondolas and gondolist are seen up and down the channels? : )
I have now fallen into the story and script (good and bad).
I was working on Leo's paintings for the cardinal quest and soon found that its best to have the end-quest paintings not be pixelart but pictures of the paintings. He only ever made 15 paintings, actually 14 and 1 partial with Verrochio.
The player does draw/collect these drawings along the game and so I just went ahead and traced the paintings.
Its a WIP and I will come back to this later on in Chapter 2 when the Cardinal quest begins.
_____
@King of Games, the proximity of the catacombs and lava cavern is a result of art made prior to storyline/script. I'd rather not revise all that now. Boss 1 in the lava cavern will remain there. For the crypt/catacombs the entrance appear by the lava cavern but once entering that area the actual Boss 2are is far away so Boss1 and 2 are not as close as it now appears. Its an adjustment/compromise.
The five emblems that end each chapter is my solution to use daVinci's geometric and mathematical drawings and plans into the game somehow without getting into OTT stuff for younger players. Again, its another vehicle to show daVinci's scope of work without the game being a professorial dissertation.
____
I have broken the game into Chapters to follow the 'journals' theme. Each Chapter ends with one of the 5 emblems/elements pieces. Below is Chapter 1. All c+c welcome.
Florence…
during the Renaissance…
                                                                  (Map with Chapter 1)
For generations under the reign of the Medici Family…             (Seal of the Medici)
Florence was a rich, powerful and peaceful city...                 (Florence happy scroll)
By the time Lorenzo came to lead the Medici
a rival family led by Andrea de'Pazzi…                             (Seal of the de'Pazzi)
began to threaten the power of the Medici
Florence was in turmoil…                                            (Florence gloomy animated scroll with tempest)
Leonardo daVinci once lived in Florence…
and often helped Lorenzo with his creativity and imagination…      (daVinci drawings slideshow)
If the fog of war and despair were to end…                         (Lorenzo on castle tower overlooking Florence pan out)
for the people of Florence and the Medici…
Lorenzo knew only Leonardo could find a way…                       (People of Florence)
Venice…
Leonardo received Lorenzo's scroll…                                 (Leo in office with scroll)
with the urgent request for his immediate return to Florence…       (Map screen with interactive Venice and Florence) (control T)
Lorenzo had been a great patron and even a friend…
Leonardo set sail for Florence at once…                             (Ship b/w)
For a friend in need, is a friend indeed.                           (Ship color pan out)
(everything in Medici is about friends and friendship. This is the main overall idea)
Chapter 1 for the most part is the game tutorial.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Prologue - The Ship Interior
Inside the ship, the Captain of the ship will explain the gameplay to Leo and have some minor conversation. Before landing the captain gives Leo the Map of Florence (map part 1) (controls M).

Inside Leo's Cabin Leo is napping all alone. Francesco enters the room and wakes Leo.
F: Signore…signore…we are arriving in Florence very soon.
L: Yes, yes. Thank you Francesco.
What would I ever do without you.
Captain enters cabin
C: Good morning Signore, I have something to give you before we dock.
(Map part 1) (Map pops up with Medici Castle highlighted)
Florence is not exactly as you remember it and you could get lost.
You can view it anytime you wish by pressing "M"
F: What is that on the map, Signore.
I've never been in Florence…
I'm very excited.
L: Yes, Francesco that's deMedici castle.
I must see Lorenzo as soon as possible.
I hope everything is well.
C: Signore, Florence is not as you remember it,
dangers now abound in Florence.
You will need something to help you…
F: Captain, I may have started as an apprentice
but I am more than that now.
I will help the Maestro.
C: You are courageous young man
but it never hurts to be well armed.
---to Leo: Maestro take this simple wand (Leo gets simple wand)
(collection screen pops up and only contains the medici scroll---the simple wand is added and highlighted)
You can keep the simple wand here for now but when you need it just press "C" to use it.
(collection screen remains until player presses the exit button)

C: Well, it seems we've docked.
It has been a pleasure to have met you Maestro.
If you ever need to sail to another city, return to the Dock.
I wish you well in your adventure.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Beginning - The Dock
Francesco is standing in the center with the luggage nearby. The chests are next to Francesco (yellow/blue/red the yellow is opened) When Leo talks "A" to Francesco:
F: Maestro, I used the simple wand on these chest and was able to open the one with the yellow lock.
I found this key (leo gets house key)
L: Perhaps this is the key to the house Lorenzo had provided us during our stay in Florence.
I should find our house before meeting Lorenzo.
You stay here with our luggage until I find our house.
You can then bring them and settle us in.
I have a feeling our visit may take some time.
F: Maestro, if you get lost remember the map or talk to people.
The dock is mostly empty and only the top scene NCPs are there. Only the Monk NPC has dialogue
Fra: Hello Signore, welcome to Florence.
Its nice to see someone walking about.
Most Florentines are frightened and hardly venture about as they used to.
Florence hasn't been the same since the arrival of the Famiglia de'Pazzi.
L: Yes, Florence does seem different.
What is your name?
Fra: I am Fra Angelico
My patron Lorenzo de'Medici has commissioned a painting from me to help lift the spirits of the Florentine people.
What is your name?
L: I am Leonardo daVinci.
Fra: Oh! what a pleasure to meet you maestro.
My real name is Guido di Pietro
Please call me Guido
L: Grazie, you can call me Leo
Fra: Leo, it is my friend.
Florence is very inspirational despite the current turmoil.
See those people standing there? (pan to scene)
They gave me the idea for Lorenzo's painting
Do you wish to see it?
____________
L: Not now, grazie! (if Leo says no scene ends)
I must see Lorenzo right away.
____________
L: I'd love to see it! (Saint Nicholas Calms a Tempest at Sea and the Miracle of the Ration of Grain painting pops up)
That is terrific Guido. Lorenzo will be happy.
Fra: I see you have no sketching/drawing Journal.
Please accept one of mine (leo gets Drawing Journal)
L: Grazie Guido.
Fra: I don't have any supplies to offer, but you can buy these in one of the shops. (the map pops up and shows the highlighted shops)
I often find Florins around the city.
People are so frightened they just drop or hide them.
If you need some look everywhere.
L: Guido, you are a saint.
Fra: One more thing my friend.
The people of Florence have become distrustful.
You will often have to ask many questions.
Eventually they will help you.
The people of Florence are good at heart.
L: Grazie Guido, you are a saint.
I must leave now
I must see Lorenzo right away.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Florence
(The BG music is a bit gloomy and bleak until Leo completes the Josquin harpsichord quest later on.)
On the ground in front of the castle is a weird design.
Leo finds it curious. (this is a tele-transporting spot later on after the GPS invention for jumping from area to area.)

The horse statue with general is fine. (in chapter 3 the statue is destroyed - in Chapter 5 Leo makes the single giant Horse)
The cripple from the painting is by the small fountain begging for money. (Leo may or may not give money nothing happens either way)
Random NPC walker (he is also frightened and says anything that Leo needs)
Passage to Forest and gypsy camp is blocked by a guard (guard dialogue is all about the dangers and how unsafe it is to pass)
Passage west of the city to the de'Pazzi Villa is blocked by guards. (Its too dangerous to pass)
The end game gate is closed but Leo can see it closeup and notice the missing elements.
___
The mother in the Annunciation painting (Painting 1) is sitting by the fountain (her dialogue is about her daughter being lost - that she's afraid - she mentions the end game door to Leo and suggests he look at it. She wants him to unlock it so she can go home once she finds her daughter)
The girl from the Annunciation painting is outside the Cathedral (she is lost and wants to find her mother, she asks Leo to help her)
Once Leo tells the girl her Mother is by the fountain Leo gets the painting badge. Collection screen pops up with added painting badge (Leo can now draw) Control "D"
___

The Library is closed.
The Bell Tower is blocked by a guard.
The Last Supper is closed.
Mona's House is closed.
Shop 2 is closed.

OPENED
Only one Market shop is open with an NPC. (all dialogue is about the lack of customers)
The Cathedral is open with a few praying NPCs (no dialogue). (The side areas are blocked by monks or nuns).
The Empty house
House next to Shop 1 is empty. (This is Boticelli's house) A note on the desk says he's at Imola Lake working on Lorenzo's commission. Leo wonders if he's being told the truth and whether Lorenzo is a true friend or just using him somehow)
Michaelangelo's house is empty. A note on the desk says he's gone to find a good marble block for the statue Lorenzo has commissioned.  He is in the 'forest mines' east of the city. Leo is again suspicious of Lorenzo.
_____
Shop 1 This introduces the whole buying and selling and their screens.
In here Leo meets Shopkeeper twin #1 (the silly and funny one) his brother is Shopkeeper twin #2 (the stern and serious one)
____
When first entering the shop
_______
S1: Bienvenuto, signore!
So good to see a customer…
People are frightened…
business has been slow…
I am Shopkeeper #1 (name to come)
Please look around.
L: What do you sell here?
S1: Oh signore we sell everything
We are always getting new items
We also buy items you don't need
L: Excellent! my name is Leonardo daVinci
S1: THE Leonardo daVinci?
L: Yes
S1: What an honor signore
I will keep an eye out for rare items that may be useful to you.
You must come back often
L: Thank you Shopkeeper 1
S1: I imagine you will end up with many items soon enough.
You will need to be organized if you are to see what items you have.
Lucky for you today's special is writing journals
They are just 100 Florins
Do you wish to buy one?
L: yes, I think I should.
(This brings up the collection screen and shows the Invention Journal which is highlighted)
(The invention Jornal opens up the right side of the collection screen with the item inventory) (control >)
(any items collected by Leo up to this point will be shown on the list)
(Exit collection)
S1: Do you need to buy or sell now?
L: yes/ no
SK1: Use the Invention Journal to see the supplies you need so when you come to either my shop or my brother's shop you will know what you need. (map highlights Shop 2)
"Contraptions" and inventions always need rare items.
We specialize in rare items.
L: Thanks again, I'll see you soon
The shops in chapter 1 only have one shop has a shopkeeper at any time so the player never sees both twins at the same time.
(maybe the twins will be the same person (there are no twins). This could help Leo later with the good guard/bad guard stuff later in the game)
_______
Leo's house is closed but opens with key from Francesco
_______
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Leo's House
Leo finds his house and can walk around its all kind of empty.
Once he exits he is ready to enter the Castle. (The guards now let Leo enter)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Medici Castle
Entrance -
Upon entering the first floor of the castle Leo finds walks over a big seal of the Medici family. Leo can look at this closely to reveal 5 holes in the seal. There is also an empty platform with a weird design on it, he finds it interesting and is curious about it. On the top of the stairs Leo first meets the good and bad guards. The bad guard is a spy for the de'Pazzi and will always steer Leo in the wrong direction, with lies, bribes and cheats. He is near the locked door on the left side of the room.
The good guard is a loyal Lorenzo knight and will always help, be honest and suggest the right things to Leo. Leo is unable to enter any closed door. he is on the right side of the room. After showing the good guard Lorenzo's scroll Leo can enter the 1st floor.
GG: I cannot let you through.
Is that a Medici scroll?
L: Lorenzo has sent for me. It is urgent.
GG: You may enter Signore.

BG: I cannot let you through.
Is that a medici scroll?
L: Lorenzo has sent for me. It is urgent.
BG: Its very fancy.
___
First Floor-
___
After passing the door once Leo enters the entrance room the Good and bad guards (GG + BG) are no longer there at all (they are next seen in the forest).
The first room is a dining room and its empty. Hall has paintings with text.
The BG music here is Josquin dePrez's harpsichord music. This music loop has 2 versions a simple lo-fi version and a hi-fi version. In chapter 1 only the lo-fi version is used.
At the end is Lorenzo's commission room and Josquin dePrez is playing music. Leo can talk to him. Josquin is trying to come up with a better tune because Lorenzo does not like the composition. Leo can't do much for him now.
J: Nice to meet you Signore.
I am Josquin dePrez.
L: That music is beautiful.
J: Thank you Signore.
Lorenzo is not very happy with the composition.
He wishes for me to improve it but my Harpsichord is not what it used to be.
L: Maybe I could help you later.
I must see Lorenzo quickly.
I don't have time now.
J: Oh signore, I could use some help.
Please come back.

Down from there is Lorenzo's bedroom. On this floor are clues for the 2nd floor sister's puzzle in the paintings and Lorenzo's desk.
Up the stairs is a Castle guard 3. When Leo talks to the guard.
G3: I see you have a medici Scroll you may pass.
Long live the Medici.

___
Second Floor-
___
Upon entering Leo finds the door locked. This room contains no yellow chests so Leo must return later in the game and good important prizes are here.
To unlock the door to the 3rd floor Leo must find the key by solving the daughter's puzzle.
Leo must pull the switches in the order of the daughter's birth by getting clues from the conversations with the sister's and from other clues around the castle.

On the top hallways is Leo's first Information sign and should let the player know that these signs always have clues and guidance. The sign reads:
Lorenzo il Magnifico and his wife Clarice Orsini have nine children.
PieroII, Guilio, Giovanni, Guiliano and Ippolito are the boys.
Luisa, Maddalena, Lucrezia and Contessina are the girls.
Lorenzo has a weakness for his daughters and they are 'THE KEY' to his heart.
Knowing their order is what you seek.

2 Guards are by the sign.
Sign Guard 1: You should read that sign?
I guard Contessina.
Contessina is a big baby
Sign Guard 2:
DId you read that sign?
I don't see why Maddalena needs a guard
All she ever does is spin yarn.
I wish I was able to help fight the de'Pazzi instead.
Door Guard 3: You cannot enter, Go away!
You need a key to open the door
Don't trust any guard, many are spies.
I hate cats but I must look after Luisa
I wish I was on the front fighting the de'Pazzi instead.
AFTER PUZZLE
Oh! You have a key…you may pass.
Door Guard 4:
You need a key to open the door
I've heard of you Maestro daVinci
Did you invent the alphabet?
"N" is my favorite letter
I guard Lucrezia…good thing she's not a Borgia, hehe.
AFTER PUZZLE
Oh! You have a key…you may pass.

Lucrezia:
Have you seen all the "paintings in the castle"?
There's one of me when I was a baby.
Boticelli himself painted that, hehe
(On first floor is a painting.  The plaque says: The Madonna del Magnificat by Sandro Boticelli. Piero, Lorenzo's wife and her oldest daughter Lucrezia posed for Boticelli. (Switch 1)
AFTER PUZZLE
I miss the peaceful days of Florence

Maddalena:
A Gentleman never asks a lady her age . . . How rude!
Do you like my Spinning Wheel?
Its the best invention in history.
(Daughter without a clue) (Switch 2)
AFTER PUZZLE
Please help us Florentines

Luisa:
Do you want to hear a secret?
I am my father's favorite daughter
(on the first floor on Lorenzo's desk is a note signed to my favorite daughter) (Switch 3)
My cats wants to play outside but we aren't allowed to go outside.
"My older sister" Maddalena won't give me any yard
for my kitty to play with.
AFTER PUZZLE
Please help us Signore

Contessina:
Its scary out there
hmmmph, my sisters are mean
My sisters call "me the baby"(Switch 4)
shhh! you'll wake the baby
Someday my baby might be a Pope.
AFTER PUZZLE
Please help my father Signore.

Once solved the key appears before the door (sound FX) and Leo can go to the 3rd floor.

___
Third Floor-
___
Medici's throne room.
(Leo enters and bows before Lorenzo)

M: Welcome back Leo. I have been waiting for you.
I need your help.
L: Its so good to see you ilMaginifico.
I've come as soon as I could.
M: Please my friend, call me Lorenzo.
L: Grazie, ilMaginifioc…errr… I mean Lorenzo.
M: Leonardo, Florence has fallen under very hard times.
I fear for the future of Florence and its people.
L: You can count on my help Lorenzo.
M: The de'Pazzi family has grown strong and powerful Leonardo.
They are threatening Florence and will defeat us if we do nothing.
L: How could that be Lorenzo.
How have they amassed such power?
M: Did you notice the medici seal when you entered the castle?
L: (If he saw it when entering) Yes Lorenzo, it has some holes in it.
(If he did not see it) I did not see it.
____
(A must event and Leo needs to go down to view to continue) (talking to Lorenzo gives Leo)
M: Please come back after you view the seal
____

M: Inside those holes were the 5 elemental stones kept in my family since the reign of Cossimo the Elder. These 5 ancient Emblems are the source of power and strength of the Medici. The Medici have always sworn to use them for good. Recently, they all went missing. I can only suspect the evil Andrea de'Pazzi is behind this.
L: How could that happen Lorenzo? This is terrible news indeed.
M: There must be treacherous de'Pazzi spies in Florence and even within my castle. No one can be trusted Leonardo…no one!
(Leo is now introduced to the medici vs. de'Pazzi health meter. It is set at 50% for both families) (control H)
(This GUI meter rools in at the bottom center of the screen when seen)
(To win the game Leo needs Medici to be 100% and de'Pazzi 0% in the HP meter. This is not used much in Chapter 1)
L: I will find those emblems Lorenzo and help you restore the peace of my beloved Florence.
M: Thank you my friend.
I know only you could help the people of Florence, de'Medici and me.
Come back and let me know of your progress. If you need me I'll be here.
L: Where should I begin Lorenzo?
M: I wish I could foresee the future Leonardo but I simply can't.
be careful and please hurry.
___
On the upper landing is a hole in the ground. On one side is GG on the other is BG.
GG: That hole looks dangerous.
I've seen others go in there but then never after that.
Please be careful Signore.
BG: I don't think that hole is dangerous at all.
I've seen others go in there.
You won't know if you don't try it.

If Leo walks into the hole he falls to Castle entrance (shortcut down) (Leo loses 1 heart).
After Chapter 2 this is the elevator invention (shortcut up and down to Lorenzo)
___

After this Leo is left clueless where to go and gives Leo a chance to explore Florence.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Leo's House
Francesco is now inside the house. The luggage and the house is furnished. The 2 paintings in the art studio are blank.
Francesco is very excited about being in Florence. Leo doesn't know where to begin helping Lorenzo. Francesco says he was walking around and met a gypsy who wanted him to play a game. He told Francesco to visit the Gypsy camp sometime. (the map pops up and the gypsy camp is highlighted) The passage guard has moved to the forest entrance and Leo can now enter the Gypsy camp.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Gypsy Camp
At first all the caravans are closed and there isn't much to do until Leo finds the minigame NPC.

Nearby is an NPC blocking the way to the future card mini game.
G: Good day signore
Its nice to see someone
This city is mostly empty and business is not good.
L: Things will get better for us all
G: I hope so signore.
I am opening a stall here soon.
I will give you a map so you can easily find me later. (leo gets gypsy camp map with minigame highlighted) (Map part 2)
Please come back soon.
______
(This NPC will later have the card betting mini-game (a real game from the renaissance). (The mini game doesn't open until Leo meets David in the forest. Which is the Michaelangelo side quest. AFter this begins Fortunata can give Leo clues for David's side quest.)
F: I see a stone man of great beauty

____
Leo can now enter the gypsy camp caravan and meet Fortunata.
F: Welcome signore my name is Fortunata.
I read minds, can see the future and know everything
What is your name?
L: Didn't you just say you read minds, hmmm
F: Oh you are a clever one.
I was testing your ability to listen carefully…
…Leonardo daVinvi.
L: Impressive.
F: Would you like to know what I see in your future?
I only charge 50 Florins.
(Eventually Leo must say yes to move on. Saying no leaves Leo clueless. The 50 Florins charge is and all money spent by Leo is given back to Leo at the end of Chapter5)
L: Sure. I'll give it a try
(Some FX here, maybe shining crystal ball)
F: Ah yes…I see the number 5…
You need to gather five great powers…
I see fire…earth…air…water…the ether
L: Where are these powers Fortunata?
F: Its a very foggy vision but I can see a dark rocky place surrounded by many trees…
I see fire inside the rock…
You must find this fire.
L: Is that it?
F: No, I can also see you are very concerned about your companion…
L: Yes, I always worry about Francesco. I've grown very fond of him.
He was simply to apprentice with me for a short period of time but he's never left…
…nevermind about that now. I better go find that fire rock.
F: You must come back to me after you've found it. I should have more visions then.

Both other caravans are closed in the gypsy camp. There is a guitar playing NPC and a dancing gypsy in camp )( no dialogue but Leo can think things)
L: Nice music
(this gives the BG music for this area)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The forest passage-
The guard is blocking the way into the forest and doe not let Leo pass. He marches from side to side.
Leo must sneak by the guard by using the nearby trees to hide from one to another until passing.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The forest-
Upon entering the forest Leo will just roam and explore.
The bridge going south is blocked by a guard.
On the bottom is a scene by the sokoban with the medical badge as a reward (PAINTING 2).
On the ground by the sokoban is a weird design.
Leo finds it curious. (this is a teletransporting spot later on after the GPS invention for jumping from area to area.)
David will be found hiding in the bushes and starts the Divid side quest.
Further east is a guy named Barnardo (Painting 3) by a rock wall. This introduces Leo to inventions.
L (thinking): I wonder if this is the rocky place by the trees?

L: Young man, have you seen fire in these rocks.
B: No signore those rocks were not there before.
Florence is just not what it used to be.
I'm very afraid and have been hiding in the forest for days now.
Some of those rocks do look red.
L: I don't think they are fire rocks.
B: It sure would be great if the was some kind of contraption to break through the rocks.
I'm hoping to find a more peaceful place to live.
L: Some kind of contraption? hmmmm…
L: (thoughts if Leo has been in Shop 1) I better go visit that shopkeeper.
(thoughts if Leo has NOT been in Shop 1) There must be a shop in the city.
____
Leo invents the Rock Blaster and uses the invention to blast through the rocks.
Invention just pops up when needed. (Magic RPG law)
On the ledge below the broken rocks a guard blocks Leo's passage to Army Camp 2.
On the middle of the ledge is the forest map (map part 3).
North of ledge is Rock wall #2 (rock blaster invention again and the player is now familiar with inventions)
On the ground by the catacombbs is a weird design.
Leo finds it interesting. (this is a teletransporting spot later on after the GPS invention for jumping from area to area.)
Again, Leo thinks its very interesting.
At the end of this Leo can see a Rocky place and wonders if thats the place.
Down the end and to the right is the catacombs entrance which is locked, a sokoban that is closed.
The cripple from the painting is here again begging for money. (Leo may or may not give money nothing happens either way)
The bridge to the rocky area is blocked by a guard (generic Guard) who doesn't let Leo pass.
He sends Leo to Army Camp 2 to get permission.
Leo says the camp is blocked.
Generic Guard tells him to tell the guard blocking Army camp 2 that he sends him.
Leo walks back to Army Camp 2 on ledge and passes guard.
_____
G: Its too dangerous to pass.
You don't have permission. Go away.
L: Generic Guard sent me here.
G: In that case you may pass.
_____
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Army Camp 2
In the small Army Camp 2 Leo runs into Good and Bad Guard.
(Dialogue is the same for both guards until Leo decides who to give the invention to)
GG/BG: Dood day signore.
L: Hello young man.
I would like to enter that cave
GG/BG: We are busy, signore.
L: I thought we were friends.
GG/BG: We are friends, signore but we are coming under attack.
L: What seems to be the problem?
GG/BG: Look over there, its a de'Pazzi warship
L: I see…hmmmm
GG/BG: We may not be able to stop them
L: Maybe I can help
GG/BG: You are too old…How could you ever help?
L: I made a contraption for the Duke of Venice who found no use for it.
I knew it had potential and saved it.
GG/BG: What is this supposed to be?
L: I call it a Water Lung.
GG/BG: Old man, you are silly.
What does it do?
L: It allows you to breathe underwater.
GG/BG: I don't want to hide, signore!
L: Its not for hiding, young man.
GG/BG: What good could it ever do?
L: You could walk under the ships and sink them from below.
GG/BG: Oh signore! may I have it?
(When either guard says "Oh signore! may I have it?" the other guard jumps in)
GG/BG: Signore, let me have it.
We are friends after all.
(Leo must decide which guard gets the water lung)
L: We are all on the same side, my friends
we all all for Lorenzo.
GG/BG: Long live the Medici!
(Leo gives mater lung to one of the 2 guards and wearing the water lung enters the water)
(The guard who remains)
GG or BG: Grazie, my friend
This should buy us some time
The bridge guard will let you pass the bridge.
(On the way back to the cave bridge at some point the health meter pops up. If GG got the water lung meter moves Medici+, if BG got the water lung meter moves de'Pazzi +) (this should be a clue to Leo of GG and BG)
(When Leo returns to Lorenzo if GG got the water lung, Leo gets Florins (good invention). If BG got the water lung, Lorenzo is skeptical and gives no Florins (bad invention))
(At the bridge to the cave the guard will let Leo pass)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Lava Cavern
This is the first dungeon and is small and easy. (control S)
Dropping ground, lava, fire, falling rocks, etc. Easy but lots of danger.
The big boss is based on daVinci's dragon illustration
At the end of this Leo gets the fire emblem.
When completed Leo exits the cavern and finds Francesco there
F: Maestro, I've been looking for you.
L: I have been busy Francesco
F: Maestro, its so dangerous everywhere
I was very worried about you.
L: I knew you would be Francesco.
Lorenzo is in peril and I've had to hurry
F: You should take me with you from now on Maestro
L: Perhaps, I will Francesco
Perhaps I will.
F: What is that thing?
L: Its the fire emblem. I…we must find the missing emblems if the Medici are to ever restore the peace in Florence.
F: …emblems?…
L: Its a long story my friend
We should go to Lorenzo and let him know of my…our progress.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Medici Castle Throne room-
(Next to Lorenzo is GG and BG) (Behind Leo is Francesco)
L: Lorenzo, I have something to show you
(Leo shows the fire emblem to Lorenzo)
M: Oh! this is great, you must find the other emblems quickly, my friend.
L: I will continue my quest Lorenzo
I just don't know yet, where to go next
M: I trust you Leo…I trust you
L: Its my honor to serve you my Lord.
(Leo bows)
(If GG got the water lung)
M: Leo, Before you continue your quest
Your water lung was most helpful to my army
We've held back Andrea de'Pazzi for now
Please accept this (Florins bonus)
(If BG got the water lung)
M: Leo, Before you continue your quest
Your water lung contraption was not very helpful
Andrea de'Pazzi has gained some ground on us
We must find a way…quickly (no Florins bonus)
L: I will return as soon as possible, my Lord. (bows)
(As Leo goes to exit the Throne room whichever guard had the water lung pops up and laughs)
GG or BG: hehe!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Florence Outside the Castle
F: Oh Maestro, I've never been so nervous.
L: Don't be silly boy.
Lorenzo is a great and rather humble man at heart.
F: That Castle is so beautiful.
All that tile work is amazing.
L: It is Francesco, it is.
…You know, I've never liked that word…tile is such a silly word.
F: huh?
L: Just thinking out loud, my boy…
maybe something like…hmmmm… PIXEL!
F: Well in that case…
That Castle is so beautiful.
All that PIXEL work is amazing. (control I) (Info and credits) >.<
L: hehe
Please return home and wait for me Francesco
I'll be home real soon
(Francesco goes away) (Map pops up and Fortunata's caravan is highlighted)
L: (Thinks) I should return to the gypsy camp

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Gypsy Camp
Leo enters caravan
F: Signore, I was thinking about you and wondered if you had made some progress.
L: Matter of fact, something just told me to come back here
F: I Told you I was good.
From now on when I get a strong feeling or can be of help
you will know
L: Thank you Fortunata
I would like to know where I should next go?
F: Of course signore, of course
We can be friends, you and I but…
business is business
Do you wish to pay 50 Florins?
(if no)
As Leo exits the caravan he changes his mind. (a must event)
(if yes)
L: I guess I should.
here you go. (50 Florins)
F: I can see something…
I see a huge ball…
I can see the ground…
I see a cat combing itself
I see now
You need to get the Earth Emblem
Its in the Catacombs (Map pops up with highlighted catacombs)
L: Thank you Fortunata
You are indeed very good…
Except for the huge ball part…
Everyone knows the Earth is flat.
Leo exits the caravan the screen fades to black.
Fortunata laughs…
Fortunata announces that the demo has ended and that she can see future Medici Chapters in the future and whatever else is needed.
…to be continued
Wow this is really coming together, starting to shape up beautifully. Just a few notes:
-Too much dither the fade of the map sections?
-Maybe make the paintings color reductions? Seems cheap but it's kind of a shame having it be the only npa visual in the game, but I understand where you're coming from even leaving it like this.
On an unrelated note, do you mind posting the frames of your water tiles? I'm trying to study the animation so I can make a convincing water tile.
The intro for the game is all pixelart but its all pieces and bits and make no sense to post here as static images. My coding fails but this WIP should give a general idea of the animation sequence. Timing is terrible, parallax is poorly coded. The intro will have as much interactivity from the player as possible. I will eventually add a view of Venice...again its a WIP... Its a flash file, just click the arrow button to navigate thru the intro. See it HERE!
@King of Games, I'll dig thru for the water frames and post. I warn you now the water is a mess, you'll learn nothing from them >.<
I know you are still programming, but I thought I'd report a couple glitches. You probably already know about them:
-I can occasionally walk through people, or onto them. Most notably a man from the boat area with a sack on his back. The same happens with chickens.
-When opening those blue pots, if I am near another "Press A to do" function, both will happen. So I will talk to someone at the same time, or open two pots at once.
-There is a door in the Cathedral that has a lock symbol on it, but I can walk right through. It doesn't animate to open, I just phase through it. Far lower left corner.
In the room directly before that door there appear to be pedestals on the floor that I can walk over, instead of into.
The same thing occurs on the right side, with the pedestals and door, this door has no lock symbol and I phase through.
The door in the top right corner has no lock symbol, but does not open or give a "Push A" to explain.
-If I press up while sidelong against something (no room to move upwards) I do not turn to face upwards. This makes some doors difficult to get to.
- I have question about the bible stand-thing in the cathedral as well. It seems we are not supposed to walk on it due to the coding, but the art suggests that we should be allowed?
-This one you are obviously still working on: The door of elements. If you put the pieces (which I don't understand why we have(except for testing purposes of course)) in properly, you once again phase through the door. You cannot get back through.
-The door to the top center between Medici's daughters' chambers is also not openable and unexplained.
That's as far as my time allows me to explore. It is very neat, and it has come a long way since I last played with it (When you first posted!). You are both awesome.
Thank you very much mclelun and ekobor! : )
That's a nice list of bugs, thank you very much for the time you spent exploring the world and hunting bugs. I'll fix all of them one by one and comment one by one when solved.
Latest news are that I'm still overloaded in the work, both doing exams to my students and taking exams myself, studying, etc, being the first one of my own exams this saturday. I hope to be released from all of this in some weeks and to work again in Medici. This summer I've total holidays
Thank you : )
This may be the most beautiful pixel art i've ever seen. Where on earth can I play/buy this WIP?
I'm back! I finally ended the workplace exams! The Update 12 is here! I'm truly sorry for the time passed, but the exams were unavoidable and took all my time. They're every 2 or 3 years, so hopefully I'll have more free time from now on.
The update is in my site: http://www.jaumealcazo.com
There are many things to do, but I wanted to post what I have now and immediately begin working on update 13.
Things done in update 12:
1 - Prologue done:
    - I feel we need an animation of Leo awakening. Maybe just 2 or 3 frames, of him blinking, yawning, "unlazing" himself, opening one eye, getting up, whatever... I think so, because the transition of him sleep, and him awaken, is just too rude as it's now.
    - In general, I followed the text of jal, but changed it a little bit in a few spots, take a look and see if the corrections are good or bad.
    - The map marks the Leo's house instead Medici castle, because it makes much more sense. The player is supposed to go to Leo's house FIRST. I've done this because
    it would be absolutely  weird and confusing for the player to mark the castle in the map (when the player is in the ship), and then marking the house (when the player is in Florence).
    - The dialogue changes accordingly to accomodate to this, trying to follow jals dialogue as much as possible.
2 - Map done:
     - You can bring it up (as the ship's captain tells you in the prologue) by pressing "M" key, and close again by pressing "M".
     - As Indiana Jones would say, the X marks the spot. The map autocenters on your current location, so at the beginning the X is always in the middle.
     - If it cannot autocenter in the middle (because you are near a border), then it tries to center itself as much as possible.
     - You can scroll it with the cursors.
     - The X is autorounded to the nearest pixel, so it always goes from pixel to pixel,
     - In the map, I fixed a problem that happened when entering/exiting buildings. The "X" in the minimap didn't
     take in account the offset that happened beetween the entering position of the building (inside the house)
     and the exiting position of the building. I mean that when you enter in Leo's house (for instance), the
     Leo sprite is physically inside the house, and when Leo exits, he's in the middle of the street.
     Because of this there was a mismatch in the "X" in the minimap when exiting/entering buildings, but I
     took in account this, and (after hard time thinking and programming the solution) I fixed it! : )
     To show you how complex is this particular point, only I have to say that the function that "recalculates"
     the minimap's X after exiting a building, has alone 72 lines in total of the 2439 lines that control Leo ALONE.
     For calculating the "X" (xglobal and yglobal variables)
     I take in account the current frame of the chunks, the x and y of the chunks, and the x and y from Leo,
     the resolution in which we actually are, if Leo dashed or not, and if Leo walked or not into slowing areas (stairs).
     Some people, when faced with an apparently simple programming problem, could think:
     "What? That's very easy to do, you only have to.." I only say: I thought this way
     before, but until you actually do the things, you don't know how easy or hard are them to do. One thing
     is speaking, and the other doing the things ; ) Some things SEEM EASY to do, but when you are solving them
     you find unexpected things. It's like in real life: "Ok, this forest (seen from above) it's easy to cross",
     and then having hard time inside it crossing it, trying different paths, seeing that some paths lead to
     swamps or are cutted, etc, until you find the right path (or one of them).
     Now it's impossible to calculate all the lines of the code, because the code it's scattered among many places. But I
     can say you the lines that sumate all the classes and scripts alone, external to the Flash IDE (have in mind that in 5 minutes this will change,
     the number of lines are always changing as I add more funcionalities or fix bugs):
     At this moment of time (11/7/2011, 14:12PM) the lines are as follows, ordered from most to less:
Classes:
Lines    Class
------------------------------------------------
2439    Leo
731    Collection screen
487     Element's gate
458    Sokoban
412    Shops
335    Npc
322    Ship's Captain
209    Chest
205    Cargo carrier
161    Minimap
152    Sokoban's block
150    Scrolls (scrolls or painting scrolls)
138    Sister's Puzzle
134    Francesco Melzi
125    Patrolling sprite
112    Seagulls
105    Complex patrolling sprite
96    Pickable material (salvia)
81    Girl by the rocks
80    Switches
78    Bad guard
76    Painting (in the map)
73    Post signs
73    Servant (by the fountain)
69    Prize (blue pots)
62    Cardinal
62    Locked door (Leo's house)
61    Money hud
56    Good guard
53    Quests
49    Monk
45    Sister's gate (opened by sister's puzzle)
41    Twin with moustache
35    Kid boy
35    Kid girl
Scripts:
Lines    Script
------------------------------------------------------
1431    Entering/exiting buildings
202    Global variables initializing
70    Main menu
TOTAL: 9682 lines of code so far, COOL!! : D
3 - The walktrough so far reaches until Leo is told to go to Medici Castle:
     - Melzi gives the key to the house.
     - Open the door and access Leo's house:
      - Melzi is already waiting you inside (he brought the luggage) and tells you to go to Medici's Castle:
      - Animations inside Leo's house:
          - Laboratory table.
          - Painting room table.
          - Chimney.
          - Big candeliers.
- The castle is marked on the map:
     - If you go to the beginning point, you see that Melzi and the luggage are removed:
     - If you try to go to your house before obtaining the key:
4 - Leo now walks pixel to pixel, in all the resolutions.
I had an error in which Leo moved fractions of pixels, a picture is worth 1000 words:
     - Leo walks pixel to pixel also with "slowers" (stairs).
     - The clouds don't go pixel to pixel, it was too fast. I tried also to move the clouds every 2 or 3 cicles, but it was too "frame-to-frame" feeling.
     - Leo also is located "pixel perfect" when entering/exiting the buildings. I checked all the buildings, but I may have missed something, if you are in doubt, do right
     click, and press "Zoom in", to see it, and please report me the bug.
5 - The post signs don't open automatically.
You must open it on purpose. They now open twice fast, I mean, the fade-in is 10 frames, instead of 20 frames, to give the player the impression of more speed, and more responsive game and controls.
6 - Collection, credits, and elements gate also have a fade-in of 10 frames instead of 20 frames.
7 - New painting: The virgin of the rocks:
      - Virgin of the Rocks painting added (you must first solve all the Salvia-Sokoban quest, and then you can paint them).
      - The kids place themselves in the same position as the real painting, after gaving the salvia to the ladies.
REMEMBER YOU MUST FIRST TALK WITH THE CARDINAL TO BEING ABLE TO PAINT THINGS!
8 - New paintings placeholders: (jal, you forgot the "St. Nicholas Calms a Tempest at Sea" picture)
    - Virgin of the rocks.
    - Annunciation.
    - Guy by the rocks.
- There are also new names (that Jal wrote long ago) for 2 of the old paintings:
     - Saint Nicholas Calms a Tempest at Sea Painting.
     - St. John the Baptist Painting
REMEMBER YOU MUST FIRST TALK WITH THE CARDINAL TO BEING ABLE TO PAINT THINGS!
9 - Animated chimneys in the roof of Shop 2, and Mona Lisa.
Bug correction /Minor tweaks:
I can occasionally walk through people, or onto them. Most notably a man from the boat area with a sack on his back. The same happens with chickens.
1 - A long reivindication by all of you, now the mobile characters block Leo!!! Please test:
      - Sack carrier.
      - Ship captain.
      - Servant, by the fountain (the Annunciation Painting), on the west-southern corner of Flo, in the ence, near the gate of the elements.
      - I leave the chickens and ducks collisions for the future. Now I don't feel it's important, but if enough of you tell me, I will do them also.
2 - Before, when entering to the Library's basement, if the player kept hold the cursor key, then Leo would enter and exit the basement/Library in a loop. This is solved now. If the player keeps hold the key in this situation, I make the game wait for the player to release the key, before moving Leo.
3 - I decreased the "slow speed". This is the speed when you travel across "slowers" (stairs, mainly). This was done in order for Leo to match the sorrounding pixels, I mean, to travel from pixel to pixel, and not fractions of them. Hard to explain. Anyways, now it's solved and the "slow speed" is now 1 pixel/frame.
4 - White outline when winning keys or scrolls.
5 - New phrase for Leo when looking at the dog of the beginning.
This one you are obviously still working on: The door of elements. If you put the pieces (which I don't understand why we have(except for testing purposes of course)) in properly, you once again phase through the door. You cannot get back through.
6 - I reviewed this and there was a silly bug in the code and I solved it.
Bugs not solved:
Originally posted by ekobor
When opening those blue pots, if I am near another "Press A to do" function, both will happen. So I will talk to someone at the same time, or open two pots at once.
1 - I can't figure out how to solve this in a fast and easy way. This happens because the objects are listening for actions from Leo. So, when two or more objects are listening and the given conditions are right (for instance, Leo is near the object), then the action triggers.
2 - I only can think on this: When an object is about to be triggered, then it could check all the other objects of it's kind, for check if Leo accomplishes the conditions given to trigger the other objects.
But If I do this, then, when Leo touches two objects, none of them will be triggered. Hmm.. I'll think about this. It's not trivial to solve this.
There is a door in the Cathedral that has a lock symbol on it, but I can walk right through. It doesn't animate to open, I just phase through it. Far lower left corner.
In the room directly before that door there appear to be pedestals on the floor that I can walk over, instead of into.
The same thing occurs on the right side, with the pedestals and door, this door has no lock symbol and I phase through.
The door in the top right corner has no lock symbol, but does not open or give a "Push A" to explain.
I have question about the bible stand-thing in the cathedral as well. It seems we are not supposed to walk on it due to the coding, but the art suggests that we should be allowed?
3 - I'll review all of this when we reach that point. The Cathedral is after the Lava Cavern and other things. You'll able to enter the Cathedral only after solving the Lava Cavern and other things, so we'll review this in the future.
If I press up while sidelong against something (no room to move upwards) I do not turn to face upwards. This makes some doors difficult to get to
4 - I put this on my to-do list for the future, I'll think a solution.
5 - The pieces will be collected along the game. For now, we will concentrate only in obtaining the first piece. This will be the ending point of the PART1 of the game. The other pieces and parts of the game are likely to be programmed in another programming language and likely to be commercial.
Originally posted by ekobor
The door to the top center between Medici's daughters' chambers is also not openable and unexplained.
6 - This "doors" are supposed to pop up menus or help, or historical text, but none of them are working for the moment. You can see them also in the shops or in other places.
We'll leave this for the very end I think.
Ekobor, thank you very much for the bugs reported, and for the time spent playing the game! And I'm also flattered about the things you say about us, thanks!!!!!! : DDD
Extra bonus hit
You can wander around the Last Supper building. This is all that I did before jal told me to leave the Last Supper for the future. I've no pictures right now, but it's the building close to the shops.
In conclusion
...if you only have few time, please please be sure to check the prologue and the map mainly!!
Not had time to play it yet, but with the 2 objects opening bug, you could loop through them and just open the closest one? Then if they are exactly the same distance just choose a random one or base it on the direction or that leo faces?
EDIT: Having played it, i would advise taking his facing into account, because you can, for example, examine the music listeners because you're under the impression that you are examining the weird thing near the cat. Maybe you could also add an effect to indicate what will be opened or whatever? Making an addition outlined sprite would be a lot of work, but maybe you could add some kind of programmed effect to make it flash or light up or something? Just an idea.
Also, maybe it's just my computer or something (although i don't see how, the guards etc. walk normally)
, but leo moves at a ridiculous speed. The "slowed" areas seem about right, but his normal walk is easily what i would expect a dash to be, maybe more. Did you change it? :)
EDIT 2: Stuff i liked since the last version. COLLISIONS WITH PEOPLE AT LAST ITS SO MUCH BETTER OMG OMG OMG OMG WOOH! aaannyyywwaaayy ;) Also a lot of the dialogue is nice, i actually laughed out loud at the knife thrower, "It's good, but i bet he can't do it standing on only one foot". I still can't get over how nice the game world is, plus you fixed A LOT of really annoying bugs that dragged me out of the immersion last time round.
One last thing, i know i always nag about this, but leo's walk anim is still a little wrong in my eyes. He should bob up and down (down when his legs are widest apart, up when they're together) but currently he doesn't bob at all when walking up/down, and left/right he seems to jiggle back and forth? And a persons collision zone should only be their head. I understand this effect can be a massive pain to code so i don't blame you for leaving it, but if you come at someone from above, you should go "underneath" them, so it looks like you collided body to body and not feet to head. It looks right when you come from below and left/right.
Anyway, i'm loving this and i hope to see it's completion in the future. Good luck! :D
Terrific stuff -- the amount of work you both have put into this is staggering!
In the interest of being helpful, I have made a short list of little bugs you may not be aware of:
1. Words in the text box sometimes seem to move apart from each other (as if they were printed on a piece of rubber being stretched).
2. Words that don't fit on the top line of the text box can still be seen drawn there before popping down to the bottom.
3. Text box words fade out after the text box is closed, but they should disappear first.
4. When talking to Francesco, the dialogue says 'Sure, take this key and wait me in home', when a more natural sentence would be, 'Sure, take this key and wait for me at your home.'
5. When entering some buildings (like Michaelangelo's house), when Leo appears inside of them, he is too far into the middle of them, and it looks like a big 'hop' in the action. He should probably be closer to the doorway.
6. When Leo leaves a building, the screen should go black before the action freezes, which will make the transition seem smoother. At the moment, the black lasts only for a short time, and it looks like a mistake, like a 'flicker' in the action. It may seem wrong, like the transition will look like it takes longer, but having it be black longer will smooth out the action.
7. When Leo leaves Michaelangelo's house, he is standing off to the side, rather than right in front of the door.
8. Leo can 'almost' enter a house, and then be walking under the roof layer, and stand on top of the house signs.
9. The game would not let me close the sign for the Library!
10. When you walk up to something from the wrong direction, you aren't allowed to turn toward it if you are already touching it.
11. When you leave a building, and the amount of money you have shows back up, the numbers change a few times on their own.
12. When Leo begins walking down, he shifts one pixel to the right, and when he stops, he shifts one pixel back to the left.
Okay, so the list got pretty long after all :P
But it runs great now, without making my computer whine (in small mode), so my hat's off to you -- great job!
I like the idea very much!!! I will try to make it, taking Leo's facing into account and highlighting the object. The outline could be made with a filter (the same filter that is used for outlining the text). Very good idea!
About the problem of the 2 objects, I thought a possible solution. The method that "opens()" an object could be static, it means that this method belongs to the class, not to the instance. The "permission" to open an object could be static, so in this way only one instance can fire the method. Then, the instance could wait for if this method succeeded. If it succeeded, then the instance could make it's job (changing the frame to the opened one, adding the money, etc...)
I'll try it!
Yes, it's done on purpose. I thought I was bugging the player making Leo walk so slow, and some people complained that it was taking too much time to go from one place to another. But I may have increased it too much. I'll review it.
If my memory don't fails (I don't have the code right here) the speeds are as follows:
FAST_SPEED=24*_global.multiplier;
SLOW_SPEED=12*_global.multiplier;
SLOWING_SPEED=4*_global.multiplier;
The global multiplier is the thing that takes in account the resolutions. The "default" resolution *in the code* is 4 times the normal, so, for instance, the slowing speed means "1 pixel/frame".
The fast speed (when dashing) is 6 pixels every frame (keep in mind, game targets 35 fps), and the slow speed (walking normally) is 3 pixels for frame.
The only thing that should be remembered is that any speed should be divisible by four, to avoid bad pixel alignments.
Hmmm... I never thought about that before. The animation thing I didn't understand if it was a pixeling thing or coding thing.
The collision from above, you are right, it should work that way. As flash and AS works, and the way this game is programmed, is hard to solve, but I'll think what can I do.
The main point is adjusting the collision boundaries, this is easy thing. The hardest part is deciding which character draws first (z-depth). This seems easy (swapdepths), but only works if the character and Leo share the  same "mother" MovieClip: _root.
If they don't share the same father, swapdepths don't work.
The problem is that Leo is always in _root, and some characters are also in _root, but some others live inside the "chunks" of the world, because it's easier to manage. I only put a character in _root if he/she must travel far beyond his/her chunk (chunks are 80x80 pixels) or has complex or special behaviour.
I'll think in something.
Thank you very much! : D very glad you like it! Thanks for the time for finding bugs, I wish to comment on some of them:
I don't understand this one : S I understand the words, but I don't understand the meaning of what you are saying to me. Could you rephrase it, or put an example how may the solution be?
Originally posted by Ninja Crow
2. Words that don't fit on the top line of the text box can still be seen drawn there before popping down to the bottom.
Yes, well seen. I noticed this but thought no one would notice too much. Ok, I'll solve it. The problem here is that the wrap is done on a word level, but the words are printed character by character. I think in precalculating the maximum width permitted, and when drawing each word, see if the lenght of the word plus the others is > than the max width. Let's see..
Originally posted by Ninja Crow
3. Text box words fade out after the text box is closed, but they should disappear first.
Ok, this one should be easy to fix.
Originally posted by Ninja Crow
4. When talking to Francesco, the dialogue says 'Sure, take this key and wait me in home', when a more natural sentence would be, 'Sure, take this key and wait for me at your home.'
Thanks, this one is no problem, only changing text : )
Ok! This one is also easy to fix.
At the moment, the black lasts only for a short time, and it looks like a mistake, like a 'flicker' in the action. It may seem wrong, like the transition will look like it takes longer, but having it be black longer will smooth out the action.
This one is harder to fix. This is because flash and actionscript are single-threaded AND don't allow you to sleep() or wait().
I mean, you can't stop the next line of code to being executed. For instance (pseudocode):
function enter_library{
     fade();
     change_background();
     ...
}
In this example we see that Flash does the fade(), but then it doesn't wait for the fade to end, and changes the background.
I'm thinking in the function setInterval for solving this (call another function when a certain time has passed).
7. When Leo leaves Michaelangelo's house, he is standing off to the side, rather than right in front of the door.
Easy to fix, thanks! : )
8. Leo can 'almost' enter a house, and then be walking under the roof layer, and stand on top of the house signs.
Hmm.. Could you be more specific about which spot happens this or attach a screenshot for me to see what you mean?
9. The game would not let me close the sign for the Library!
Arrgh.. that one I encountered only a couple of times. Some times works well, sometimes works bad. It makes me crazy, because all the post signs share the same code, because they are all the same class. I'll think in something.
I dind't fully understand this one, could you be more specific (which object, or screenshots?)
Ok, this is piece of cake.
Wasn't aware, I'll check it.
Glad to hear that. Anyways, The performance and the fps drop down a little bit in my laptop in a couple of spots. I'll should do another round of code optimizing soon. I try to program with the Flash IDE open, Photoshop open, a pdf to read something when I wait for compile, windows media player, and so on, so I try to have my computer busy when I program, to polish more the performance. But anyways, as said, a performance round should be done soon.
Thanks : )
I don't understand : (
This is not a preview, it's an update. The prologue is fully fuctional, you only have to go to my site to test it. The two buttons "adventure" and "prologue" are for testing purposes, because I can't wait to see all the prologue every time I compile to test a thing. Also I think the player may or not want to see the prologue if he has seen it before, in this way he can choose. But it can be organised in other ways, I didn't know what to do, so I did it this way.
The last part of your phrase (the game has no prologue) I don't understand. I tried to follow your walkthrough and dialogue as much as possible, and you wrote then a prologue part.
What do you mean?
Jal, clear the browser's historial/cache
If the prologue button doesn't appear maybe you are seeing the cached version (the last time you saw it)?
If you clear the browsers "historial" (don't know how it's call in english) then my site should sent to you the latest version.
Is this what is happening?
Just though i'd say that framerate is still a solid 30 or so for me on normal, and my laptop and internet are OK, but not amazing, so it seems fine performance wise too :)
He doesn't move stupidly fast, just a bit quick, somewhere between what we had and what you have now should be fine.
Another (not so) quick go-through and another list, some of which I know have been pointed out:
1. Blue pots won't open from above. I think this is something to do with the obstruction, they prevent Leo from getting close enough.
2.In the forest, below the Look-out Tower there is an invisible wall, between there and the guard's camp.
3. You can "enter" the Look-Out Tower, (go in the doorway), but nothing happens. Again, not meant to be there yet... Maybe put a gate on the entrance to the forest until we're supposed to go there?
4. In Medici's house, the two guards who move (One in front of a locked door, the other saying that Medici is waiting for you) Will walk through you in the "cut-scene". Perhaps make Leo move to the side and back during these events so that the guards can pass?
5. The Right-most Guarded/locked door in Medici's house. Where does it go? If you stand in the arch-way it looks like it enters into the next room. More of an art thing than a code thing, but it is odd none-the-less.
6. Blue Pots re-cover themselves too quickly. This country is going to go into a depression if Leo keeps finding this much money. Or they already are, which would account for the amazing sums you can get quickly.
7. The chests that you open with the wand. I don't think they should ever be refilled, or if they are have them only do it if you've completed a quest or something.
8. You can still cut corners on some objects, in the fairground/squatter's city there is a chair on the uppermost building that I noticed this specifically.
9. The tent beside the fortune teller looks like you should be able to go under/through it. You can't.
10. You can only talk to Lisa if you are below her, not in front. She also doesn't tell you what to bring (still working on, I know) maybe just don't have her speak until that bit is done?
11. The door between rooms in Michelangelo's house is offset to where you walk. You must go slightly above it and walk partially through a wall.
12. Some of the building entrances (maybe all of them) let you enter even if you are half-out of the door. You walk partially through a wall.
13. You can walk partially over stools in the Library.
14. You can't walk onto the altar in the basement of the Library.
15. The stairs to the basement switch too fast, it doesn't seem like you are slowly walking down steps.
16. The walking speed is (as mentioned) a bit fast. Compared to walking down steps, you are running. Maybe bring the walk speed down to 8 (2 pix/frame) and the run to 12 (3pf). The jag between the run and using stairs is big, you are going sooo fast, then slow.
17. You are never told how to run? You just figure it out?
18. If you talk to a shopkeeper instead of asking what there is to buy, you are given a line of conversation and then the wares. It would be better to return to the option text, with "What do yo sell" and "Leave" as your options at that point.
19. The house beside Shop 2 (which could have a better name?) lets you walk on it's door. The same with the castle thing beside your house.
20. The Last Supper (I know, still working on~) you can walk on the upper corners of the big table.
21. When Leo blinks, it takes too long. It looks like he is wincing in pain, or struggling against something.
22. If I stand on the shadow/entrances of the inner doorways, after a time the game decides I want to go out, even though I'm not trying to exit.
23. On the little building as part of the Last Supper building, there appears to be an open door. You can't walk into it, and it leads nowhere inside the building.
24. Corroborating with Ninja Crow, the numbers for your money jump when you exit buildings, and you are put too far away from doors when you go through them.
25. If you are in a building and look at the map, I think it should either switch to a map of the building (very helpful, but unlikely to be implemented) or have the cursor hover over the building regardless of where you are in it. I have the cursor on the road when I am in Medici's house.
26. I don't think the sister's quest is obvious enough. This is my second time playing since you put it in, and I only realized because I looked here. Maybe the sisters need to say something to bring it to your attention?
27. If you are running and release "A" near someone, they will speak to you.
28. I can't move the blocks in the Sokoban, and Leo will look like he is walking and "grab" the blocks if I turn and face them without pressing "A".
... Sorry that was so long. Most of them are little things though. Still really enjoying it. Though I might be having more fun looking for small errors than trying to play the game ^^;;
I don't understand this one : S I understand the words, but I don't understand the meaning of what you are saying to me. Could you rephrase it, or put an example how may the solution be?
Really sorry about that! I should have said that the letters tended to shift around as they were being printed out. Here's an example:
I think that different letters 'wiggle' in the different screen sizes, but I only tried it on small and normal.
8. Leo can 'almost' enter a house, and then be walking under the roof layer, and stand on top of the house signs.
Hmm.. Could you be more specific about which spot happens this or attach a screenshot for me to see what you mean?
Here's where I noticed it:
10. When you walk up to something from the wrong direction, you aren't allowed to turn toward it if you are already touching it.
I dind't fully understand this one, could you be more specific (which object, or screenshots?)
At any time if you are walking along a collision border (as if sliding along against a wall) you can't turn in the direction of that border:
This is most notable when you walk up to people and then try to turn toward them to talk.
Oh, and I noticed one other thing, when I was making these:
The area where Leo talks to Francesco has a very large area that he can't walk on, which seems to stop him from moving around, and it feels a bit unnatural:
I felt like I should have been able to walk right through from right to left, under Francesco, but the barrels stopped me.
Hope that helps!
Also, as per NC's last point about the big collisions, there's on in leo's house, the opening that goes left from the entrance room. The way the wall has been done, it looks like you should be able to go through a lot further down. Sorry to weigh you down with bugs heheh ;)
You guys constantly amaze me with the amount of effort you put into
this game. It's good to see you're still working on it. I've been working
hard on my animation course, but I'm still studying counterpoint piano
so I could attempt to write something for this game.
I found some dialogue in the market place that could be revised.
When I examined the trumpet player, Leonardo says:
"They seem happy. I wonder that Lorenzo hasn't tried to put a tax on street music."
You could change it into:
"They seem happy. I wonder why Lorenzo hasn't tried putting a tax on street music."
Keep up the good work!
Or, "It's a wonder that Lorenzo hasn't tried putting a tax on street music." I guess, in the right light, it can be seen as progress that we're down to correcting small gramatical errors. :')
Whoooaaa! Very cool! Thank all of you by the comprehensive and exhaustive bug hunting! You're the best!!!!!! I'm also glad to hear back from Chris!
I'm already working on the bugs pointed by all of you. As more noticeable, in my laptop I have now highlighting (bannanawalrus idea) of the blue pots (adding 50% brightness) and outlining them with 1px border (all with code, no bitmaps), I'll show you when I have more bugs corrected, and also all the objects will be outlined and highlighted.
I used one static variable (of the class), which an instance uses to ask permission for highlighting and outilining the prizes, and it works quite good, but still there are some cases in which two blue pots are highlighted at the same time, I'll work on that to see what the hell happens.
Ninja, I've a premonition and you could help me to discern if it's true. What version of Flash Player are you using? Does it work the sokoban with your Flash Player version? Does the sokoban work after upgrading to the latest? and do the letters wiggle after upgrading?
I found that in my laptop, with flash player 8, the sokoban works good, but with flash player 10 doesn't work. I'll fix this. Would be nice to know if Ninja was using also flash 8 or 10 (right click on the game, or any flash move (youtube, etc..) and the last option reads "flash player version xxx").
I'm very concerned on the wiggling letters, I'll try to see what happens, but it seems something nasty : / I remember obtaining the wiggling months ago, but now the letters are steady in my laptop. Hmm...
