Jalonso, you need to add texture for it to really feel like rocks. At the moment they give a very plastic vibe. Although they are getting better, especially the ones with the moss or w/e it was on.
Here's a reference for roundish rocks: LINK. Haha but seriously the texture on those is actually pretty good. The sort of cracks etc will help i think, so it seems less like a blanket has been placed upon some rocks. I also like this reference but i dunno if it's really the same kinda rocks you're going for. Meh, hope that helped a little. Edited by Larwick - 03 October 2008 at 9:21pm |

I am drawing these kind of rocks as seen in the California deserts.
They are super smooth and the best to Mountain Bike on. ![]() |

I agree with the other smooth rock haterz, I think for the benefit of the piece you should try going for a more rocky type of rock, something more jagged and harsh. They are a huge improvement over what they were before, but the type of rocks you've chosen don't seem to really translate that well to pixels and they really aren't that readable as rocks.
I would chose readability over realism. It's better for them to be instantly recognisable as rocks than to perfectly stay true to the type of rocks in the reference you posted. Just had to had my 2 cents... >_> I know it's been said before but I think the rocks are really holding this piece back |

they're WAY too smooth. more like the rocks you see in the canyons of the Roadrunner show. the rocks you pretend to emulate have a grainy texture and their shape has been molded by the wind in one direction.. in my opinion, these two cliffs you have there are just eating a lot of details and are not really adding but sustracting elements form the piece. in the same way you have to re-texture you pirete ship, i do suggest to takea asecond look and redo these mountains. they do need a better work on their desing/structure.
also, forgot to add that since yours is goign to be placed near the beach, might be a good idea to integrate the "wind" that comes from the sea in the desing /erosion of these rocks. Edited by Metaru - 03 October 2008 at 11:02pm |

Seems like you are starting to figure out better texturing techniques.
There are a few cases that you have incorrect textures added, therefore not expressing the proper material. Such as the glass houses. A bit of lighting issues. Overall though it seems like you are figureing it all out as you go. Its coming along well, and Im beginning to like what I see. Im going to let you still go for abit, before I make any edit or big long message. Also, I just simply dont have the time, due to school currently. Continue with it. Progress is great. |

The rocks are certanley better, but i have to agree with the above.
They just seem far too smooth and spherical, rather than sharp an angular, which is how i think rocks be.

I KNOW!
DITHER! Doooo itttttt. And a problem with your current rocks may be that the 'cuts' look indented rather than a seperation between rocks. They (the dark lines) should follow on around the rock, even if it's very subtle. |

Are these rocks made out of water? Smooth and plastic is indeed a big difference. I don't like the rocks that much you showed on the picture, but even if you are going for those your cracks are still not really on the right places and this thing screams for (dithering) texture.

Could use more THUNDER AN LIGHTNIN SCRATCHYPIXELS!
imo. ![]() ![]() Wakka wakka PS I added a yellow-green because I didn't feel like scouring through your palette and shifting things around to make it work. And that shadow from that rock is just a laugh. Try to avoid looking at it, it's likely to cause retina damage. Edited by Saboteur - 04 October 2008 at 6:36pm |

Saboteu's
example of moss is more the way to go as he defines it as a separate
object, where as you define moss as a shade of color. The rocks look
great from a smooth perspective, but lack the texture that your
reference has....I think I make a good point when I say this, I also
think that your hedges lacks the texture what makes it look like a
foliage, but as things go your my GOD!!! :P

I understand that these were a lot of killing work, but to be honest:
I like the rocks, really. But just in the amount you had them in the first image. Its a bit too much now I think. What I like way more, and what looks much more calming, and less overdone are the higher dark rocks. They are squared, here and there a good crack, but on the rest, its a bit too much of it I think... If I am the only one with this opinion you should keep the rocks. Otherwise rethink them. It feels really too filled up for me. |

the first thing that pops to mind is"get a life!", but I contradict myself when I say that I do the same type of thing(not as good though) and spend allot of time being a perfectionist, but this is awesome and I cant wait until your in the hall of fame!
until my next random post on this topic :P Good luck(oh and I don't actually mean the first sentence....I do love pixel art) |
