Ok, how about something like this? Which one is better? Oh, yea what exactly do you mean roughen up? Like add some grass, or something like that?

First one.
The line of trees at the far back is far too dark. It gets hazy back there: those tones cannot be as dark as in the foreground. The lowest tree of the slope forest is overhanging the water in a weird way. |

Ok edited just a tad. The background trees, and worked on the overhanging tree thing. Tell me if I need to trim it back some more.

Not a lot has been changed in your last few renditions. Try making a couple of different colour edits, loosen it up and try a paintover like jal, iggy, Manu and myself have all done. The great thing about digital art is that if you royally screw up you can go back!

OK I messed around with the sky, sort of like jalanso's edit, except not
nearly as nice. I think it will look pretty cool once I clean it up.
Any tips on how to make it look better?

Well, the thing that jumps out at me is that the lines you've added to the sky seem to sag at the right edge (past the birds).
You may also not be able to mix the dithering at the top with the texturing. I don't know if this will work, but the thought occurred to me that it might look cool to have the colours change from top to bottom (or bottom to top as the case may be). Jalonso had gray to blue, and Jeremy had blue to white, for examples. I wouldn't know without trying it, though - what do you think? |

Got rid of dithering, did this in about a minute, so really sloppy. Anyways, just to get a general idea down, what do you guys think?

Well, it goes with skies as with trees and mountains: they come in many fashions, and straight out of your head is not one of them. You should know by now ;)
The faraway tree line is now too light! The scene is backlit: so those trees should be darker than the ground they're on. The dark olive tone you have in those few pixels beneath would work, I think. It might also be used to soften the earth/grass transitions, esp on the left side. |

Here is a real sloppy edit. Kinda tired. The sky needs some smoothing out. I think once I add the other colors in, it will be fine. Hopefully.

lol that's because it is. I basically scribbled. I think i'll take another go at this tomorrow. I kind of liked it with a simple style, so maybe just throw in a few small clouds, instead of a sky full.

Haha, you would think I would pick up on this, but that would mean I would have to be smart! I'll look at some refs then try again.

Alright I was going for more of a simple cloud style, (if you wanna call it that) It's not as busy, but it still needs some work. Hopefully I can get the sky done with and finish up with the frame. Can't believe how much i've learned on this piece. Thanks to all of you for you patience and help.

Almost done, not sure what to do with the corners. Can't find a reference similar to it. Hope to get this done today. Woot thanks all.

I'm calling this done. Thanks to all that helped me. I know it's not great, but it's a heck of a lot better than what I could have done by myself. Thanks guys.

I read this so intently my eyes feel dry. o.o
I am new to everything pixelart as well as pixeljoint so I feel very shy. This thread is so informative and helpful that I feel a little closer to everyone. That's kind of sappy, but true. Kenpokis, your dedication really is inspiring. Now if only all this sappy would make my eyes water. O.O |
