If you were going to create a generic sprite design that would work for most computer games (ie Action, Mystery, RPG, Platform, etc), what would be the various sprites you think would be necessary for:

1) A Character
2) A Vehicle
3) A Building
4) Equipment / Item

For instance.
I think that for a wheeled-ground vehicle, you should have:
1) Motionless
2) Idling
3) Moving
4) Turning
5) Jumping

Further, I think you should have those 5 sprites in 2-5 states of disrepair to allow for a vehicle that has been damaged and can still perform at those levels. 2 states of disrepair for a simple game (Fine, Hurt), 5 or more for a game that would show fire-damage, bullet-damage, etc... Obviously more intense on the graphics that the 2 states.

Also, you should have one set of DEAD sprites for when the vehicle is completely demolished. Maybe even a couple different versions of the dead sprite for different styles of death... fire, exploded, smashed, etc...

This post is to gauge what the pixeljoint members see as necessary sprites for a game... I'm just curious...

Here's the thing...
My reason for asking is...
I am working on a game. Currently, I am the only artist (sad, I know).
I want to create a template for sprites, so that as I come up with a character, I can create a sprite sheet, and do the sprites I have the energy / patience for now, and as I find the time or desire, I can scroll through the sprite sheets and see which sprites are needed for which characters.

For instance...
Right now, for all CHARACTER sprite packages? I do the following:
Keep in mind, these are ISO, so I do a front and back of each
1) Standing
2) Sitting
3) Kneeling
4) Walking
5) Running
6) Striking with a Melee Weapon
7) Firing a Pistol-sized weapon
8) Firing a Rifle-sized weapon
9) Casting a spell
10) Taking Damage
11) Wounded
12) Dead

Now then...
For instance. I know I should add in Jumping. So that would be a generic sprite pose / stance to create... but what else?

If YOU were building a game, would you want to have poses for reading a book, using the phone, or playing guitar? What would be too much, and why? What would be the minimum...

I am trying to come up with what is necessary and what is nonsense. Personally, I think there is a decent generic list of ISO poses to create, but I just haven't seen that list... Do you have it?
