Hey all, I have never done an animated piece before and need some insight on where to start. It seems very overwhelming and just a basic run down of what more experienced users do would be greatly appreciated.

I am trying to create a run animation for this character
But really any general guidelines or approaches to animation would be appreciated,

Some people like the colored method to plan animations. There are countless examples in the gallery...couldn't find any right now:p

See stickman's feature too its HERE

Also, go the gallery and use the search in the bottom of the page (not the top one) and search 'run' and 'walk' for over 100 pages of examples to study.

You can use 1ucas' gif viewer HERE to scroll through the frames and inspect motion further.

Don't make the mistake of using the idle frame as a base.
Plan for 6 frames total, it's less work than 8 or more, and much better result than 4 frames.
Note that the character is slightly crouched when idle, so he should be permanently taller when running.
Ensure that the volumes stay consistent during animation.

Have a look at "The animator's survival guide", it's designed for cartoonists but is full of good advice for computer animation.
Skip to page 117 for walks  and much general movement advice, page 182 for runs.
