CHALLENGE: Splitting 10sUse a canvas which is split equally into two parts - either horizontally or vertically - to create a piece with a subject matter of your choosing. However, your piece must be a cohesive whole, not two individual pieces placed next to one another. Each half of your canvas must use individual palettes that are shown below. You must use all ten colours from both palettes - ten colours on one half of the canvas, ten on the other; with a grand total of 16 unique colours. Optional Bonus Challenge: Avoid creating a portrait.

when you say "half", you mean "left and right" or could be "up and down"?
this is ok? ![]() Edited by Benjiro - 18 June 2012 at 8:42pm |

Yep, left and right/up and down - what you're doing is correct.

Hi everyone! This is my first real pixel art attempt and first post on pixel joint! I still have a lot of work to do on this (including using all the colors in the bottom half) but I'm having tons of fun with it. Though I have to say the color limit is tough!
Thoughts and Crits appreciated!

^ that's a pretty clever concept, but the zigzag between the halves can't be used - needs to be a straight line.

I wanted to do something that didn't have an "obvious" split of the screen. I'm not sure that jives with the rules.
I am also considering redoing the entire scene with the c64 double-wide pixels but I just LOATHE how stars look in that style and there are quite a few stars in my image. I will probably do some touch-ups as the week goes on but I feel the piece is nearly complete. Edited by Darth Mandarb - 19 June 2012 at 7:11am |

Made this frame to put the image inside.. but I think I'm gonna scratch it because I just got a new idea for the actual image.
It's a pixel editor intended to unify the image; most likely it will be scrapped though, just throwing out there: ![]()

Even though I'm not american I thought a 911 concept would be nice. Something to do with the left side being morning, and the right side being night. Notice only one tower. |

@ Rockhart: I had a similar idea as this, but so far your's is much better, I guess I'll move on to my backup idea :) I'm also new to pushing pixels, and I must say I have some catching up to do; yours is very good for a beginner, at least in my opinion :P

I'm a graphic designer and illustrator so I'm not really new to digital art but this is a much more detailed/limited medium than what I'm normally used to... and it's pretty fun because of that! Ok, Draft II. I still have to do the sails on the boat and add a bit more detail in the rocks and water. All the colors are included and again crits and comments are appreciated as I'm very new to pixel art. ![]() Edited by Rockhart - 20 June 2012 at 12:23am |

Might be a bit cheesy, but here is a WIP of the "Tome of Forbidden Knowledge"
Will probably work on the candleabras a bit and I'm not quite happy with the font for TOME... Any suggestions/advice? ![]() |

I think the lack of dither is too contrasting, you've established strong dither and texture and it makes that area pop, might not take much effort to subtly blend it in with micro amounts of additional transitioning dither or subtle texture, and when i was highlighting it my attention was grabbed by those diagonal lines, they don't add to the form and seem a distraction, other than that I really like the rest of your piece great work =D just figured I'd point that stuff out whilst there is still a chance to edit before deadline Edited by Grimm_Dingo - 23 June 2012 at 7:44am |

Okay, good to know. Jeremy
Grimm Dingo: thanks for the comment and I will think about editing that today; not sure I will though.. I kinda find it to be a nice flatness with a relief for the eye on both sides, were it goes into a flat tone. I can't make up my mind though.. arggh.. small update: okay I went ahead and edited it adding a bit more dithering as suggested and lessened the yellow on her lamia half's face: previous: and edited:![]() Edited by |||| - 24 June 2012 at 10:21am |

yeah I think that is bit easier of a transition especially at 1x it doesn't stands out, and they still retain their crispness =)
extremely rushed so far, should I polish and enter it? animation kinda sucks so far too
Ed* something more like this with the hair ![]() Edited by Grimm_Dingo - 24 June 2012 at 12:55pm |
