I wanted to try something where it wouldn't be obvious where the pallette was "split". I was thinking some kind of story where the "energy" came out of the void and started methodically wiping out humanity.

Sounds like "The Void Trilogy" by Peter F. Hamilton. I like that the split is subtle, very nice. Plus I love the planet texture you use.
