Hey everyone!

I'm currently working on this piece and I'm having some troubles with it. I'm not quite sure what bugs me in it so I decided to show you guys to see if you could help me out.

What do you think? What's wrong with it?

Thanks a whole bunch! (The pink is going to be invisble ;))

Find a lightsource and stick with it. Try a few shading tuts.

Ok, so how is this one coming in?
Same linework, different light source and coloring. I focused on the helmet. I'll add the blue stripes later... So how is it coming?

Biker, version2

Thanks a bunch everyone!

This is for a sprite and I don't have much color rectrictions. Is more colors better than dithering?

Any other major problems you can see?
Thanks alot!

Dithering will help smooth out the transition between two colours. I
think its more rewarding to finish a piece with a lower colour count
however if adding more colours looks better i would stick with that.

for a sprite, if its gonna be animated and/or have a lot of frames. use more colours. dithering is a lot more work

Thanks guys!

Yes, this pic will be lightly animated. I'm gonna try both technics and see what works best for me... I'll keep you noticed on the development!

Thanks alot!

Ok, so here's what I've done so far. I tried some cross hatching dithering. I don't know if it's a known technic or if it condemned by pixel artists, but it felt natural to me since I did alot of comic book style illustrations.

How is it comin'?
Thanks alot!

The whole helmet just looks so awesome :D.

The cross hatching looks a bit dodgy on the left pec and toso. The
line separating his shoulder and bicep also needs smothing.

I think the highlights on the shirt are too intense.. maybe make the lightest two colors a bit more grey, that'll make for a smoother transition between shades and the dithering wont stand out too much.

And, yea, that's a sweet looking helmet!

I love WIPs where the artist actually updates the image with major
improvements, not just something that rots away.

Hello everyone!

Hey, thanks alot for all the nice comments! I'm very happy that you guys took time to reply!

Ok, so heres what I've done now. I did most of my shadings/ hatchings and I believe I am satisfied with it for now. I used less dark grey and more hatching on the shirt so that it smooths the colors out. I did very little hatching on the hands because it caused the fingers to bour the thing too much and looked too messy. Now, all that is left to do is that freakin' mouth breathing thingy and some fixing on issues that'll be pointed out.

Ah yes, Leel, the reason why I am going to use some very intense highlight on the shirt is that this piece is to be displayed on a gba and color definition ain't great. Since I don't know yet how it's gonna turn out, I use those shadings. But I will try it with less intense shading if it's not turning up well.

Here it is:

Take four!

Thanks alot once again for all the nice coments!
Take care all!

I think HIS right wrist is too small. also the black line around the
elbow travels too far into the body. I think the "freakin' mouth
breathing thingy" is fine.

Keep at it

I agree. I'd also try for the area on his chest below his arms darkening it a bit. It would be darker than the top of his chest because his arms would cast shadow. I believe.

Hey there guys!

I'm gonna be gone for a week so I won't update this until tuesday, but I'm writing the wrist and shadow thing down on my "NEXT THINGS TO DO" list. You're both right on these issues, thanks for spotting them!

I'll post it whenever it's ready.
Thanks again and take care all!

this is definitely a huge improvement from the beginning. I like pieces that do that.

the hands look a little weird. moreso on the left part, it might be that the fingers are kind of funny or that you can't see the thumb. and maybe if his right hand was clenched more.

but, fantastic improvements.

Hey there!

Ok, I'm back and workin'  on this piece as we speak. I'll take a good look at those hands, thanks for the pointer.
I now have to make a animation of this so I'll post it when I'm through with the first version.
Thanks again!

Hey there guys!

Ok, so I've been trying to animate this darn thing for the past week and realized that it still had numerous issues to fix. So, I restarted the colors again. I made my colors less distinct from each others (now, they kind of blend together, as a whole). The eyes hurt less looking at the pic! ;) Also, I changed some colors and added a second light source from the back. I'm going to add more details, like logos and stuff, but I want to know if there are some new mistakes from the new work.

Ah yes, I had to crop the image.

Biker with more stuff added

I'm not much of a pixel artist but it's fun learning it! :D Thanks again for the help!
Take care!

I prefered the dithering on the last one.
This one looks like the shading is a pure color and it just turns me off.

keep it consistant.

I actually like the newer one as opposed to the old dithering. There just seemed to be a lot going on with all the dithering. This one is better, I think. Cleaner and simpler.

Hmmm... Two directions on this new version.
Ok, I'll keep workin' on it. I'll try fixing the hand and adding more colors to blend the shadings together. Since this more like a big splash animation, I don't think the dithering makes it more high quality, but then, the only way to find this out is for me to go both ways. I'll post a new version when possible!

Thanks again for the comments!

Fixed some shadow issues, fixed the hands and other minor things I don't remember now.

I think that it looks great. But I think the shading from the lightsource from behind might be a bit off on the jacket. I think this might be fixed if you mde the darker strand of shading just before the yellowish color a little lighter so the contrast isn't as harsh? I also think that the pointy part of the jacket on the left side could be not so pointy? :P

The lightsource shading on the helmet is perfect. :)

The glasses also aren't really round looking. This might not have been your purpose with this, but the line seems a bit jagged on the side just before the strap. Fixing it might make it look better.

Anyway, it's really a fantastic improvement, I think. :)
