Hey all, new member and aspiring pixel art newbie here. I have been teaching myself for the past week using tutorials found on here and elsewhere online. I worked through a good tutorial on creating textures, but one of the textures that was not covered was a flat carpet/rug texture.
Would anyone happen to have any tips/advice on making carpet textures? I am currently working on a pixel carpet that I just jumped into. It's looking alright so far, but I don't know how it will look when I will eventually try to loop it. Thanks in advance super-d |

This is what I have so far, 16x16 looped four times:
![]() Not sure how well this works as a ground texture in a video game (that's what I was going for), but I don't know how to make it as such. |

Think about the contrast, and concentration of detail. A floor texture generally has a consistent tone because overall it is flat, like any surface. If you use too much contrast in your details, they begin to distort the apparent flatness of the surface. There's a phrase that artists use, "draw what you see, not what you think you see."
You may think to draw certain details, like fibers, etc in the carpet, but from a distance you may not even see fibers. Edited by AlexHW - 11 October 2013 at 10:51pm |

Indeed. For carpet you don't have to pixel a whole lot. You can for example make a 2 color, tone on tone, subtle pixelling and then offset with shiny glossy floor to be read as carpet. Its not what your pixel is what the viewer reads.

Okay, that does make sense. I had a wrong visual approach in my mind.
Thanks, I will try to post more as I go. |
