@Whisper Heart- Sorry, it's a nice scene so far, but it's not a still life. A 'still life' is a specific art term for a picture of an arrangement of inanimate (not alive) objects. Things like fruit, books, or bottles etc. Not people or animals or outdoor landscapes.
Here are some old master paintings as examples of still lifes: By Paul Cezanne
By Pieter Claesz
By Vincent Van Gogh
There was a still life challenge here on PJ if you want to see some pixels: Still Life Challenge I hope this clears up any confusion on what a still life is :) |

Still, there was some confusion in the comments on the main gallery page, so my post might help someone else *shrug* |

W-what? It says "create a still life image"...I just thought that meant create a still life. And the additional overlapping-objects challenge meant that you would overlap the glass things in a still life

I was joking Tyrant. Of course the challenge couldn't be clearer but instead of any Mod correcting I thought Whisper Heart could just attack you...we need a break :p

Aha, I see. I doubt that I'll make a good target, I'd let 'em do what they want and when it gets rejected just shrug and say "don't blame me, them's the breaks."
They can burn me in effigy, I'll bring marshmallows. |

@Lusque, I like it but there are too many dark greens in my opinion and the objects sitting on the little table things seem a bit too small compared to the rest of the image.

My current WIP. It's a cylindrical vase with 2 flowers in it. I'm not quite sure what kind of flowers I should make those. |

@slym, that wine looks tasty :P
@felchqueen, It's looking like you have a good start. Ice and water are all about reflections and refractions, so as long as you have a lot of contrast, they should end up working. Just play with it? :( One of the only passable/not–a–literal–cube things I found on dA was this b/c it feels like it has the right sorts of textures for a realistic ice cube, at least. Does that help at all? I've got some stuff blocked out and some stuff more detailed, but I'm probably going to go over everything like 10 more times. :) I messed with the glasses for awhile (which need plenty more messing with), but I'm back to the window... Currently in the middle of trying to get rain condensation on the top right pane.

Anywhooosit...I wasn't going to do a pic for the challenge, but then I thought better of it, so here's a pretty rough WIP:

@Lusque: I prefer the left one, but I find it weird how the bricks are aligned with each other, rather than having the usual brick pattern.
Also, here's my current go at this:
Someone suggested I try snapdragon flowers in the vase. I think they came out alright. |

@Lusque, if your light is one of the glass elements in your composition perhaps make a lamp instead of having the bulb on the ceiling then you wouldn't have to deal with that huge expanse of wall.
I agree with Motrox the first image is the better one. Edited by felchqueen - 11 June 2014 at 5:01am |

Now you will have to stay that way :/ ![]() Edited by Lusque - 11 June 2014 at 8:07am |

Thanks for the advice, Felchqueen!
Here's my progress:
I decided to remove the cake after making the painting, because there wasn't enough glass in there. I might put it back in, though, as I'm not too happy with the vials... Edited by JackBread - 13 June 2014 at 12:50am |

@Skoby- I empathise with your ice issues. I think the table angle needs work. It doesn't seem to match the viewing angle of the glasses.
I really like the look and colours of you piece though, especially the glasses in the background on the shelf. |

Thanks, the table is only really sketched so far. I'm thinking of turning the table into a bar, fits the background more and gives me more to work with.

@Cheetah- Thanks, I'm pretty much done with it, submitted it last night. That's a printed design from the back of Goku's shirt, not shadows. I wonder if a color manipulation would help that read better :/
@philippejugnet- Oops ;P Well, I liked the mood of the piece so far. |

@Skoby, the bar makes much more sense but isn't the pump too small? It makes the bar seem very wide at that scale. The rear grey line on the beer towel could possibly be reduced to one line to push it further into background.
Looking forward to seeing this finished. . |

@felchqueen, thanks for the tips, had already made the rear grey line thinner before I read it, I've now expanded the pump and done some finishing touches and submitted it.
