    Posted: 05 September 2014 at 4:29am

Hi AllI've been trying to make a video game and I'm trying to make an adequate Grassland Tileset, and I want to get a similar effect to Kirby's Mass Attack, The Lorax and Cave Story.I feel that when my character walks on the grass it doesn't quite look right, And the Ground and Grass don't look good together, this may be due to the fact that The grass is not as detailed as the ground and I'm not sure what the best way to detail it would be.
And The ground itself looks a little funny and messy. And Suggestions on how I can fix these issue?

Also I'm using the Sega Master System Color Pallete at the moment.

The reason it looks like its walking in the grass is because the scale of the sprite to the grass is too much.
Flatten the top to almost flat and add more detail to the bottom area of the grass.
The ground is ok but maybe too red/lava looking.

What kind of detail? Do I just make it darker towards the bottom?
And what if the sprite could be in front of the top of the grass and grass below the top could be lighter?

Try doing that. That could work.

I mean most of the pixelling to the bottom edge of the grass and the top 'playable' area just one color (maybe outlined.

By pixelling more to the bottom of the grass it will also make the ground rocks fit better as they are pixelled heavier.

just a thought and i am extremely new to pixel art so i can't say my ideas will work at all but i feel first of all the sprite should defiantly be walking in front of the top grass as you stated. I also feel that shading the bottom edge of the grass to look like it is hanging down over the rock may help a bit as well. Im not sure that makes sense... but if it would help i would be willing to mess with it and try and give u a visual idea of what i mean.

I say go present what you are saying but make sure you adjust the colours or the rock.

How can I re-color the rock and still make it look good with the Master System
Color palette?

The Color issue got to big and now I have decided to make it monochrome for now and redo the rocks,
But I'm still unsure about detailing the grass and doing the rock,
any suggestions? Sorry I've got so little to show .

Maybe if I continue how I'm going with Rock and give the grass a more textured look....?

i think that is a good plan. your rock looks 1000 times better then my attempt to find something that works...... i think the biggest thing is choosing at which point on the tile the character will be walking and make sure to have that area semi flat. just my opinion but i think that would help things look a little more natural when you have the character on the grass

Are you not trying to achieve a 3d effect with your tiles?

Instead of one object like that rock, your tiles will have many little objects all capable of being shaded as if that square tile was not just square, but also bumpy

I just realized it isn't 16 by 16 pixels, and my character is not the same height as a tile, so this image was practically a flop from the start wasn't it?
