I've been doing a bit of pixeling for a while, and i feel i'm getting a bunch of my skills up to an acceptable level. Except one: Texturing.

I can make small pieces pretty well, because they don't really need a texture, or in the worst case it's just 2-3 pixels that need to be modified to get the desired effect. But when i try to do bigger pieces they tend to either look like the drawings of a small kid with few colors(in the case of "organic" things) or like legos (in the case of squary-things like houses and sofas)

I've been looking around for guides on detail and texturing, but i can't seem to find any.

There really are none because no 'texture' is universal. Checking out the gallery (hall of fame = easy start) is a great visual learning tool. You may have to dig around for a while but its well worth it.

I've looked at a lot of reference stuff, including the hall of fame. But no matter how much i look and try to replicate the techniques it just looks so incredibly wrong when i do it.

I know that no texture is universal, but there has to be a few rules/guidelines such as "When so-and-so is done in such-and-such way, the colors have to be brighter/darker compared to this-and-that" if you know what i mean. I suck at explaining.
