Update:
Adding some detail to the heap, tell me if i'm going in the right direction here...

@Scruffs: OMG thanks :) <3
@Murrman: Well this is only a mockup, but i've designed it so there would be different layers. You're right about the sky getting much darker, i'll have to add a colour or two and add some more depth later. Now i look at it it looks really scabby next to the detail of the centre.
@Psycarp: Thanks man, but how did you find my subliminal message!?
@Souly: Yes dude, but you're just sick.
Lol jk.
@Skull: Thankies. Glad you like it.

looking nice, larwick! the sig is kind of distracting me when it's there :(

and i'm not exactly sure the rubbish would be THAT dark, but i realize you are not done refining since you are still defining shapes. but very nice and detailed yes

that's the stuff I'm talking about, that's EXACTLY how I was hoping it would look.

as Ens said, just some small addition to the center of the heap and it's done

Update: (looks quite bad on a lighter background)

@Alk: Lol, sorry about the sig. And yeah.. compared to the sprites the rubbish heap is really dark. Not sure if there's any way with the programming to have different colour schemes for different atmospheres. Sounds like alot of work anyhow.
And i'm kinda thinking i put too much detail into this, for the chunky cartoony style of the sprites and stuff. But meh, it might work.
  Thanks for the commento :)

@Ens: Hehe, thanks dude. Tell me what you think of the most recent update..

@Eq: Awesome! I'm glad. I've added some stuff nearer the centre in my latest update, i'm wondering if it'd be good to define more as it gets closer to the path. It probably would be a good idea.. so i'll have a go. I think i might pull the shadow back a bit though.

@Law: Haha, bathroom sink. It does look alot like one! But no, it was meant to be a sat dish or something, i've stuck a little thing in the centre, kinda looks more like one now (i think the 'tap' looks a bit too connected to it, so i might have to sort that out later). And you must admit Lawrence, i've learnt alot of lighting and dithering skills from your works.

@Ale: Thankyou! Seeing as i'm making this into a mockup, not a title screen, i'll leave that out for now i think. I can imagine it though.

Lalala... thanks again everyone.

I'm kinda having second thoughts about this even being related to Rustbug. What are your thoughts guys? Would it work?

thats awsome!  dont go anymore towards the center, though, otherwise it may ruin the effect.  totally kick ass

The pile of trash and sky is perfect, larwick. I love it. It might be that the rustbug may be a bit cartoony, but you won't know until it is finished with the ground included. Maybe you can design a less-cartoony one too, but I think it'll look fine anyway. It looks great, you can always turn it into a scene too if you feel it might not fit the rustbug style :)

(Mayhaps a less saturated darker version of the bug could fit this type of level better? Then again sprites are meant to stand out in most games it could be perfect as it is)

AIEEE!

I can't decide whether to start speaking in tongues or gesticulating madly. In either case, mere english simply does not suffice to explain how truly awesome that is.

I -could- say it's far better than any professional works I've seen, and does more than rival many of the pixel art "masters" in our community, in many aspects... buut that wouldn't quite cut it, methinks.

No crits. Way to go above and beyond everyone's expectations.

God larwick the rustbug is the most badass pixel creation ever. That heaven scene is stunning aswell. What would I give to have this on a handheld so I could always keep it near me.

I know it's not a title screen piece, but it's sort of setting itself up as one. I really don't see how it would loop well unless you extended the scene to near four times this width, because the pile is too distinguishable that it would tile poorly. Methinks you should make it a titlescreen as opposed to a gameplay mockup.

However I know the gamesprites should stand out against the background, but the two styles seem to really contrast when you put the Rustbug in a few pages back. You have really nice Lawrence-styled lighting, and I love it, and then you have the bold yet smooth style of the Rustbug. To me it just seems like the styles are a tad to off each other that it would throw a player off looking at it.

I would think this could be remedied if you had the Rustbug in the center and made the text for a title screen, possibly centering that as well so that it would provide a balance to the realism of the background. All of the text would be in the more bold style of the Rustbug. However centering it would make you have to deal with both the heaven-lighting contrast and possibly covering up the focal point of the piece, ie, the background. If you had the rustbug on the bottom though, the eye would be attracted to that, but you'd have to sacrifice the beauty you've put into the junk pile of the scene.

sweet zombie jesus that's PERFECT !

one things been bothering me about that sky and I think that my edit shows perfectly what it is.

There's this whole godly/apocalypse type of lighting going on in the sky and then  ... and then it just stops ...

might I suggest adding a few extra rimlights further out just to complete it ?

mind you though, the locations might be of (specially near the topright where it should be on the rightside of the darker recess in the clouds instead of the left where it is now)

Oh maaaaan I should have been paying more attention to this! This is looking GORGEOUS.

I agree with Equinoxx in regards to his edit. Also I'm not a huge fan of the dithering in the junk pile, I reckon throw in another dark shadow tone for a smoother appearance.

I really really can't wait to see more. *pays attention*

Wowzers...This is looking great. I don't really have any valuable critiques to give, other than the water,( or watever reflection is listed underneath the pile) seems unfinished. But I guess thats cause you're still working on it. Texture of the sky is great, as well as the garbage or pile underneath it...You know I'm gonna Fav' this thing Hard' when it's done and submitted, so you better finish it, say, I don't know;....now....yeah, now sounds just about right...Lookin' great though

Update:

@Ens: Thanks again, :) i kinda did add a few more things in the middle.. not sure what you'll think of it. I keep wanting to add little random bits of detail to it, just so it doesn't look as bare.
@Bulo: Thanks man, really pleased you like it. I was thinking about this earlier and realised that Metal Slug also has quite realisticish/detailed backgrounds, yet quite cartoony and vivid sprites, so i might be able to pull it off.
@DJD: Haha, i'm flattered your first post is in the rustbug thread :). And yeah, if this was to be an actual level, i guess i would have to quadtruple the length of the foreground parts (i wouldn't have to add much to the sky though, cus it would move much slower... i figure). Perhaps once all the layers fit like in this scene, it would become a setup for an interesting boss battle - therefore giving a reason for the pile being so distiguishable.
The new rustbug sprite will definetely fit this style more than the previous ones. Not sure when i'm actually gunna show it to you guys, but i'm gunna be making a few more changes to it first.
  Cheers for your input!
@Eq: Lmao, thanks. I totally agree with you about the sky. I tried to remedy it a little in my latest update, but i'll be working on that alot more soon i think.
@EyeC: Ah, you're too kind. In my latest update i fixed the problem with the harsh dithering in the pile as you said, and i like it alot more now. Also makes things much easier with another colour.
And coolio, i try to update in fairly decent intervals, so you shouldn't have to wait too long each time :)
@sco: I'm glad you like it dude, but yeah, that's meant to be ground. I thought a few days back that i may make it a shallow channel of water (as if they use it to direct the water from the heaps) and i could have some interesting effects going on there. Might think about it again.
@TBOB: Yuppo, the pathway hasn't really been touched yet. I was thinking i might (if i dont do the water idea as mentioned above) have some metal planks going along it, with dirt covering the edges or something. And thanks so much. ^__^ (hope you and scott like my dead fish scribble).
@Murr: Ah gdgd, glad you like it. By natural clouds i guess you mean smaller, more normal looking ones? Well basically the entire sky is filled with this giant cloud smog, so i don't think i'll be adding any ones like that in. I'm gunna try and add more detail to the unrefined areas soon though.
@ryum: Ahah, just caught you there. Thanks alot man!

(God i write far too much)
Thanks again to everyone :)
Hope you like the update.

Well you could do what they've done in Kirby games and have a really detailed scene background that moves with the view, while background and foreground elements stay fixated to their position. the boss idea would work as well, but you'd still have to do some extension work otherwise it would become rather crowded.

You changed the rustbug around though? The only good change is chunky change. :' (

Holy..
Also, I have an idea for a machine gun type attack:
Rustbug tucks it's 'legs' in and jumps in the air (With it's rocket propeller type thing), spins around and shoots. Eh?

EDIT: I have no life. I read this entire topic.

Havent worked on it in a while though,

Didn't know which colour was best (i got uberly annoyed with the purple, but it still looks nice).
Note that it's meant for a very dark background (although i must admit i may have gone a bit ott with the darkness and contrast).

larwick: the only thing the redder shadows do is make it feel more hot, the blue-er shadows make everythign seem cooler and more dead-ish, but in the end it comes down to preference.

Thanks guys and gals.

Made some updates, and again changed the palette. As always, best viewed on a dark BG.

I dunno if i'll even bother to add anything more, i wanted to add a texture to the ground but atm i really can't be assed to start. There's also a fairly limited palette for the shadowed area. Any ideas?

I love this greenish, polluted color scheme, beats the purple one. As you say the blend of the pile to the ground is hard. Can the shadow of the pile be darkened some so that it grounds better.

no, keep the sudden change in between back and foreground, for gameplay and clarity's sake.
i'd even go as far as saying make the playable part stand out a bit more...

Thanks guys. I know it's still in this Rustbug thread, but i don't think i'll be making a mockup or anything out of it, probably just finish it as a picture in itself and move on or something. :(

One day i'll get the motivation to do some rustbugging, im sure.

Haha thanks guys.

Guys, do you think i could get away with calling the unfinished area a stylistic choice? Maybe i should just make the whole area black or cut it off.. (loss of detail then, though) I really have no drive to go any further with it. I would have to do so much to include the path and closer pile into the picture it's kinda overwhelming.
