I've been wondering about this for a while now, and I decided to get some opinions about it: If you place partially transparent pixels by hand (for outer aa, etc.) and still watch the number of colors you use (each color is a RGBA set here), is the product still considered pixel art? I would think it would be perfectly fine with a simple constant background, but if it was something more complex and unpredictable, would the loss of control over the final displayed image be enough to make it an impure form of PA?
BTW, I know partial transparency support is patchy in browsers and pixel art apps; this is a hypothetical question mostly. Thanks.

I believe in game making alpha transparencies are commonly used because it takes the weight load off to program things rather than use graphics.
I suppose that for example, in a website when overlaying over a BG it may be done too. The reason I don't like your hypothetical is that you can always determine a color to imply transparency in pixelart using solid opaque colors. |
